Book Description

I killed a girl last night. I did it with my bare hands and an old piece of pipe I found lying next to the dumpster. But that’s not the part that got me. The part that scared me, the part I can’t seem to wrap my head around and still has me reeling, was that when she charged me, her body shifted – and then she was a wolf. All snapping teeth and extended claws. But by the time I stood over her lifeless body, she was a girl again. That’s about the time I went into shock… And that was the moment he showed up.

Now, all I can do is accept the truths that are staring me in the face. One, Werewolves do exist. And two, I was born to kill them.

2.0 out of 5 stars another one bites the dust October 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
On one hand, this book may have everything you are looking for in an easy read... Good looking girl with hidden talent, one mysterious good looking guy who saves her and then takes on the job of protecting her and another guy who wants her as well. On the other hand it may be a symbol of everything you didn't like in all the other YA novels you have read so far. Sub par writing, flat conversations, skin deep character development etc... Once more, it seems like I belong to the minority in here who is giving a bad review to a book that scores 4+ stars in average. I went back and re-read some sections to see if I was missing something but I just came up with the same feeling. This is not a well-written book. I generally give 3 stars to books with writing issues but have original story lines. I can't do that for this book because if you are a fan of this genre, it is possible that every angle of the story will remind you something you have read before. Oh well, if you decide to buy it, hope you will enjoy it more then I did...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book from Heather Hildenbrand April 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I recently read another of Heather Hildenbrand's books, Across the Galaxy, and absolutely loved it. So needless to say, I was anticipating this book with very high expectations. Dirty Blood did not disappoint. Dirty Blood offers the much beloved werewolf story, but with a new, cool twist. In Dirty Blood, there are werewolves, and Hunters. Weres and Hunters are natural enemies, their purpose to destroy each other. The main character is Tara, a seemingly typical girl. But, when Tara is pulled into the midst of a supernatural world she never knew about, she must find her place. Who will help her find her way in this new world? Wes,a gorgeous guy who was deep, dark secrets of his own. Dirty Blood has action, adventure, humor and romance. The action begins right away and never lets up. The end leaves you breathless and hungry for more. I have my fingers crossed that Dirty Blood will have a sequel....very soon!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great YA Paranormal Read June 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I thought this was a great YA paranormal read. We get everything we want from a book. Supernaturals, mystery, suspense, action and a great romance.

I loved Wes from minute one. He was awesome and amazing and totally hooked you in. There was just this magnetic pool.

Also loved how we jumped right in, within the first chapter we seen where she killed the werewolf. And from there we were totally in the action.

I really could not put the book down. I wanted to see how it all played out. There was a lot of mystery surrounding it and I am way to nosy not to know exactly how it all plays out.

If you are a YA Paranormal Fan then this is a book for you!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Dirty Blood" series, book 1 - great start! December 28, 2011
Format:Paperback
Tara Godfrey is just a normal girl, living in Frederick Falls, VA on the night her life changed completely. After breaking up with her boyfriend at the pool hall and sending him home, she is unsuccessful in finding a ride home, so sets out to walk to the bus stop. While going through an alley, she comes across a girl who seems to be in some distress - however, before she can try to help the girl, the girl ... changes into a wolf, and attacks Tara. Tara, to her surprise, manages to not only survive, but to actually kill the werewolf. With the help of her new friend Wes she discovers that everything she thought she knew about herself was a lie - she is a Hunter, and it is her destiny to fight werewolves. How is it she never knew about this? And what are the "sides" that Wes alludes to? Will Tara decide to embrace her destiny, or will she decide to go about her life as it was?

While I don't dislike werewolves, I'm more of a vampire person, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book. I was a bit astonished - no, taken aback is more like it - when I learned that the favored weapon of the Hunters against werewolves was ... a wooden stake. Seriously? Why not a knife? Well, that is actually explained a bit later, but it still seems a bit strange - I hope it is further explained in later books. The characters are well developed and the plot is smooth and quick-paced. Overall the editing and writing style are well-done - at least in the first third of the book or so. After that, there are more editing errors, but still not too bad.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Potential June 14, 2011
Format:Paperback
This was a book with so much potential. While I enjoyed reading it, I couldn't help but roll my eyes a couple of times at the completely typical YA wolf references that, like many people have already pointed out on Goodreads, really reminded me of another popular YA that had wolves in it (guess which one...). We also have a family who lives in the woods, teenagers with fancy cars... There was really no need for the story to have quite so many similarities and it would have been better without them.

Another failing was the insta-bond between our protagonist and her love interest. I really dislike this sort of relationship and while it was explained later in the book, there has to be another way for writers to create a relationship, right?

There were some bits that I did enjoy about the story though. The beginning was fantastic, what a way to start a book! I liked the dramatic style that let the plot shine through, pulling me further into the story than my tired eyes would have liked.

Despite its failings, the characters, plot and wonderful writing style have made a lasting impression and have left me wondering about what will happen next. I would recommend Dirty Blood to fans of paranormal or werewolfy YA books.

More About the Author

Heather Hildenbrand was born and raised in a small town in northern Virginia where she was homeschooled through high school. She now lives in coastal VA, a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean, with her two adorable children. She works from home, part time as a property manager, and when she's not furiously pounding at the keyboard, or staring off into space whilst plotting a new story, she's lying on the beach, soaking in those delicious, pre-cancerous rays.

Heather loves Mexican food, hates socks with sandals, and if her house was on fire, the one thing she'd grab is her DVR player.
