5.0 out of 5 stars Rosey's Intriguing Debut
Last night, I got to meet Rosey. She is currently the opening act on Melissa Etheridge's Skin Tour. I was already a fan before going to the concert, even though I had only heard a few song samples from her CD. Onstage, she was full of energy as she sang about five songs from "Dirty Child," including "Love," which is also featured on the soundtrack...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun pop songs, loose jazzy stuff not so good
I bought Rosey's album on the strength of *Beautiful*, which I picked up via Windows Media Player or somesuch thing. *Beautiful* is a good song indeed, and several more tracks on this album are creditable: Afterlife, Love, Like a Dream. But many tracks didn't work for me. Her style oscillates between fairly traditional pop music (her best) and loose, lightly structured...

5.0 out of 5 stars Rosey's Intriguing Debut, July 13, 2002

Last night, I got to meet Rosey. She is currently the opening act on Melissa Etheridge's Skin Tour. I was already a fan before going to the concert, even though I had only heard a few song samples from her CD. Onstage, she was full of energy as she sang about five songs from "Dirty Child," including "Love," which is also featured on the soundtrack to Bridget Jones' Diary. After her set, she announced that she would sign autographs, so I of course went over to the stand. After buying the CD, I stood in line and waited to meet her. I am happy to say that she is very sweet and takes time to talk to every fan. She told me to enjoy the album, and while we were driving home last night, I did just that. There isn't one song on the whole CD that I don't enjoy listening to. Her style is definitely unlike a lot of the other musicians that I like, but it has bits and pieces of every type of music so that it appeals to a large audience. After listening to her voice, I would describe her as being part Norah Jones and part Fiona Apple, with a bit of Fisher mixed in there as well. After listening to the music, I would describe it as being a little bit of rock, a little bit of pop, and a whole lot of Rosey. You can easily dance to it, but you can just as easily listen to it when you're stressed and want to relax. Rosey also writes all of her songs, which make the lyrics seem more real and the messages even more important. I definitely recommend this CD and I think that you will enjoy it just as much as I do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, July 3, 2002
This review is from: Dirty Child (Audio CD)
I almost didn't review this album, because I couldn't figure out how to categorize Rosey. I was trying to figure out who her voice reminded me of. I came up with Sheryl Crow, Poe, Edie Brickell, Shirley Manson, PJ Harvey and Ani DiFranco.
the only way I can describe her stuff is as a fantastic hybrid of funk, rock and hip-hop with a hint of reggae. It just refuses to be labeled.
Contrast the pop styling of "Afterlife" with the funk of "Love" and the mellow groove of "Beautiful" and you'll understand.
That said, she's also got one hell of a voice. Her lyrics are powerful and her groove is infectious. Will Rosey be a superstar? Probably not. But that's just because her stuff is too good and too complex. It's not the bubble-gum pop of today's collection of pop divas/ditzes.
If you're just interested in the latest "flavor of the month" this isn't the disc for you. If you like good music and if you want something that you'll still be listening to and enjoying in 10 years, I recommend adding this CD to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites, September 7, 2006

I bought this disc several years ago, but still feel compelled to write a review now, after so many times played. I am in love with this album! Rosey has a fun, flirty voice that makes all her songs addictive. I was given a CD single of Love in 2002 in Chicago, and immediately had to buy the whole album. Loved it from day 1, and it is probably the only CD I have from several years ago that I always keep within hand's reach in my car. I only wish that she'd release a follow-up album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely Addictive, April 28, 2003

... Rosey's voice is incredibly soothing. She sounds very much like Poe, which is most obvious on the track "Beautiful". Her songs fall into a cool genre; her voice is like Fiona Apple's, deep and strong, but her style is a little like Alana Davis's, funky and soulful. I have "Dirty Child" on my changer, right along with Fiona Apple, Bjork, Norah Jones, Garbage, Alana Davis and Coldplay. If you're into sounds that you don't find playing on Top 40, this may be for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sparkling Debut Effort!, October 29, 2002

This review is from: Dirty Child (Audio CD)
I had to opportunity to check out Rosey recently and was really impressed. I found her deep and throaty voice really charming. I was really impressed with "Heaven," "Beautiful" and "Afterlife." Rosey is reminiscent of Fiona Apple, Beth Orton and other soulful and great female artists out there who sing their songs and have something to say. She's a name to look for and I really liked this debut effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best new pop artist...period., October 2, 2002

Rosey is destined for big things if talent has anything to do with it.

I would peg her style as pop, musically she reminds me as a mix of Fiona, Sheryl Crow, and even a bit of Lauryn Hill. But she is an original all the way--her voice has a unique, and sexy charm. The songs are catchy, soulful, and mostly contain a nice funky groove. I could see Rosey's music appealing to a diverse audience. Besides the above comparisons, she's got "girl power" ala Tori Amos, and a folksy maturity that is appealing to those who usually shun pop music. Yet her songs are very accessible. Hooks with substance.

Rosey is the real deal. I certainly hope she becomes a huge star, she clearly deserves it, and her music deserves to be heard. I have only one complaint! The producer (I assume) thought it would be cool to run the final track in monaural with overdubbed ticks (like an old 78). Fits the style of the song, but this might be the sexiest song on the disc, only to have her voice compressed by production tricks! Someone spank whoever made that creative call...

5.0 out of 5 stars Ring around the Rosey, September 12, 2002

I highly enjoy Rosey's album, Dirty Child. "Love" is one of my favorite tracks. Her great voice is very similar to Fiona Apple's. I love it! And on an irrelevant note, I also like the booklet layout... the liner notes are so pretty :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Rosey Review!, July 9, 2002

I found it amazingly coincidental that people who have bought this CD have also bought Norah Jones. I bought them both the same day, not really knowing what I was getting. I gave Norah Jones's CD a 3 star review, calling it pleasant but not compelling. By contrast, Rosey is both pleasant (mostly) AND compelling. Yes, it is hard to categorize this CD in any specific genre. Its funky, jazzy, foot-tapping good, and no cut suffers by comparison to the others. This is just a great first CD by someone who, I hope, turns out many more like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!!, July 3, 2002
This review is from: Dirty Child (Audio CD)
I am a HUGE fan of Nikka Costa and so i spent a week trying to find other artists that are comparable in the style of a singer with a great voice, great soul/funk music that expands genres and ultimately i found Rosey. This CD is a great mix of so many different sounds combined the powerful and soulful voice of Rosey. Every song on here is wonderful especially "Love" which has some pretty meaningful lyrics i can relate to. She may not have the funk of Nikka yet but it's still a great Cd for anyone interested in soul and funk music! BUY IT!!!!
