5.0 out of 5 stars Dirty Cowboy - should be on every bookshelf!
The Dirty cowboy is a family story that has been handed down to the author, Amy Timberlake. I found it to be well written and loaded with humor. It's evident that this story was written with love and respect for great story telling. It's hard to believe this is Ms. Timberlake's first published work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Try "The Naked Cowboy"
My wife and I ordered this book as a Christmas gift for our niece and nephew. Upon arrival we cracked open the book to have a look. It starts out fine, the first few pages are great, we really liked the illustration style. But then the story takes a turn for the worse. For the remainder of the story the cowboy is depicted naked. Completely naked. Graphically naked. There...

The illustrator, Adam Rex has captured Ms. Timberlake's story with accuracy and humor. His illustrations remind me of the early artwork of Norman Rockwell.

This book is not only for the young but the young at heart. Even at the age of 39, this book is a must have on my book shelf!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Circular Story, September 10, 2003

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Dirty Cowboy (Hardcover)
This is a story that any little aspiring cowboy would love. It is cleverly written with higher level vocabulary for all readers. THis cowboy takes his yearly bath and gets so clean that his dog who was told to guard his clothes hardly recognizes him. Refusing to give the cowboy back his clothes, the dog starts a rough and tumble ruckus that ends up with a happy dog who finally gets his dirty, smelly cowboy back.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a hoot!, September 4, 2003

A humorous, well written book about a cowboy and his dog, and the pictures allow the story to come to life. We bought this book for our grandson, but have each already read it a couple of times. Since it's going to be a Christmas gift, we're hoping it doesn't show wear by the time we give it to him. What a combination Adam and Amy make! The art and writing work together as though one is watching a live presentation of the story. We hope to see more from these two, for childrens' enjoyment, as well as our own.

5.0 out of 5 stars A WESTERN TALL TALE...Hilarious, August 1, 2011
This review is from: The Dirty Cowboy (Hardcover)
"The Dirty Cowboy" is a representation of a story that was told to the author by either his father or grandfather. It is absolutely hilarious. Between the author's wonderful way of telling tall tails and some f the best illustrations I have seen in a children's book recent, we have a very fine read here. The nice thing about this work is that it can be enjoyed by young and old a like...it truly is funny!

A lone cowboy with only his dog and his horse lived in a small tin-roofed shack on the New Mexico range, taking care of longhorns. One morning, after the cowboy noted that his hair housed thirty-two fleas and a small gray spider and that he had tumbleweeds in his chaps and that flies were flocking around his body to the extent that he has hearing loss in his left ear and that the cowboy's stench struck to passersby like mud splashed from a wagon wheel; our lonely cowboy decides he had better take a bath. (This guy really was very, very dirty).

After a long trip the cowboy, his horse and his dog finally find the river. The dog is told "Dawg" he said, "No one touches these clothes but me. Hear?" And the cowboy enters the river for his bath. He becomes very, very clean, top of his head to the tip of his toes. All is well

And then...

The cowboy gets out of the river and attempts to put his cloths back on...things go horribly wrong at this point. The dog, whose name happens to be Eustace Shackelford Montana does not recognize his friend...he simply does not smell like his cowboy!

Our young hero tries everything to no avail and finally figures he must fight the dog for his clothing...and why not as he figures the dog only has two teeth left anyway. And the two go at it; at it to the point they whip up a terrible dust storm....it is quite a battle.

This is a tall tale in the spirit of the old Pecos Bill stories. The art work is absolutely wonderful and the story is an absolute page turner and as I said, it is hilarious.

Now I note that we have one review which I am assuming is one of those infamous "joke reviews" we find posted to Amazon. While this one is pretty funny as it rants and raves about the "nudity" of the cowboy, it never the less gives a very false impression of this book, and I see that at least a couple of people have left comments that show they actually believed what was assuredly a tongue cheek review. Pity. While the cowboy most certainly is naked in this book, you actually see far more skin at a local public pool or on a basketball court. All of the cowboys "private parts" are completely covered up in various ways, i.e. by a frog, weeds, dogs tail, arm, and so on. The cowboy is also drawn is a rather cartoonish was and is much, much more ugly than the old dog he shares the story with. Do not be misled...there is absolutely nothing inappropriate about this book.

This is a great story, well done and an absolute delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, January 15, 2006
This review is from: The Dirty Cowboy (Hardcover)
Amy Timberlake's Dirty Cowboy is now my favorite picture book. I have started using this as a read aloud for my students at school and they love the illustrations!
The Cowboy goes to take his yearly bath at the creek only to find that once he is super clean his "Dawg" no longer recognizes him. It is a humorous tale as the Cowboy and Dawg fight for the clothing.

As a homeschooling mom, this book appeals to all of my children, ages 4-10. As many of the other reviews have stated, the vocabulary and literary style is excellent, the story is very appealing and the illustrations are simply wonderful. Amy Timberlake is a captivating story-teller who has warmed our family's hearts and is sure go far in the writing industry. I look forward to the future writings and illustrations of Ms. Timberlake and Mr. Rex for our homeschool. One more thing...We have given this book as a gift to a few of our friends - this makes a wonderful gift for families!

5.0 out of 5 stars What Fun!, August 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Dirty Cowboy (Hardcover)
This book is fun for mom and dad as well as the kids! A cowpoke and his mangy dog have an adventure that is sure to please and bring many chuckles. Timberlake's sense of humor coupled with priceless illustrations by Adam Rex revolve around needing a bath -- Why he decides to bathe is anyone's guess, but when he declares "This ol boy needs a bath!" -- the adventure begins.

You'll keep this book until it is worn out and then miss it when it is gone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, August 21, 2003

What a wonderful debut childrens' book for both Timberlake and Rex. Timberlake's story is a hoot, a silly tale from the old West that's just an all around pleasure to read. The artwork is wonderful; Rex takes a character that is in the all-together for about ninety percent of the book and still manages to keep things appropriate for the family hour with his fantastic illustrations. It's one of those great books where the story brings the artwork alive and vice versa. We read a LOT of kids' books at our house to my two children, and this is already one of their favorites.
