Editorial Reviews

2006 original cast recording of the hit production of Dirty Dancing. From the silver screen to the London stage, this performance proves that the original film's storyline and music touched the hearts and minds of more people than the filmmakers ever imagined and continues to excite audiences over two decades later. Features tracks performed by the cast as well as original recordings of songs by The Diamonds, Eric Carmen and others. BMG.

This review is from: Dirty Dancing-London Cast Recording (Audio CD)
I saw the North American tour in previews in Chicago, so I knew what I was getting with this CD. Unlike the movie soundtrack which includes well-known versions of the songs by the original artists, the cast recording has selected songs sung by cast members and includes instrumentals and some dialogue.

I imagine once the show has been around for awhile in the US there will be some lively debate of the merits of a live stage show versus the movie. This is not that forum (although I can't wait to express my opinion!) I will mention that there are one or two show-stopping numbers performed by cast members. Billy (the guy who carried the watermelon) is the male voice in both. He has an amazing and versatile voice, but the tracks on the CD don't quite convey the chills of hearing it live. The rest of the numbers, in my opinion, didn't really measure up to the original artists (I guess my opinion is seeping out after all). If you see the show and like it, the CD will be a nice memento. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.
