4.0 out of 5 stars Coco Montoya - Dirty Deal
My first Coco CD. First heard him play on a track on Tommy Castro's PainKiller CD (a must have). That was enough for me to buy Dirty Deal. The title track is killer. The whole CD gets better with each listen. Listening with headphones reveals some subtle rhythm tracks from time to time. Definately planning on giving his previous recordings a listen.

3.0 out of 5 stars review of album
In my opinion- The album is recorded very well . The vocals are soulfull ,excellent style blues delivered with heart . The guitars' tone sounds better than some of his other albums . It has bite . I'd like to hear him really cut loose though ,he's probably capable of much more .

4.0 out of 5 stars Predictable, but worth a listen, July 18, 2007

I've been a Coco fan for many years and truly appreciate his soulful voice and guitar chops. Dirty Deal is a solid offering from Coco, but as I ssaid in the title, the song are a little predictable and not quite as dynamic as some of his earlier offerings. Don't get me wrong, it's still an enjoyable listen, just less poignant than the older stuff.
3.5 stars

I just played this album for the 1st time and I can't get it out of my cd player--what an awesome new release by CoCo--lots of great guitar, great singing, and well written songs by Coco. Lots of different styles he plays so well-rockin stuff, ballads, and excellent blues. Well backup band by members of Little Feat on some songs--you can tell which ones by just listening. Its one those albums you love right from the start--you can't get it out of your head. Can't wait to see him live again-----Get this one now!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!!!!, January 16, 2007
This review is from: Dirty Deal (Audio CD)
I've got to let you all know this CD has become my all time favorite Coco Montoya disc, mostly because it is the closest experience to hearing him play live. There's a wide range of styles on this one and I'd be very hard pressed to pick a favorite (so glad I don't have to)...I do find it hard to sit still while listening to it, including when I'm driving. I've been fortunate enough to hear these songs in their various incarnations leading up to this release and I've got to say: Coco, you and the boys (Randy, Steve and Tony) and those behind the scenes, y'all did a great job...now, when's that live album coming???

On a personal note...Coco, I'm truly blessed and honored having you as a friend. Wishing you all the best with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "COCO" IS "OK!" "OK!", January 19, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dirty Deal (Audio CD)
This CD is well worth buying. But to you blues aficionado's who rely on Shaq's recommendations, let me put it in terms you'll understand. Coco is no SRV, or an Albert, or a Buddy. He's definitely a large step below them. But he is also not a lounge singer type like Smokin Joe Kubek, Lil Ed and the Blue Imperials, etc. Coco, is a large step above them. This CD seems to pick up steam with each song. He shows his flexibility with different types of guitar playing on a number of songs. He performs a great ballad, with a Johnny Copeland, song (#6), that's 5 minutes and 59 seconds long. (I could have said 6 minutes, but Shaq don't fool around when it comes to da blues!) NEW, GOOD BLUES IS HARD TO FIND, and till "Jumping Joe" Bonamassa dedicates more of his recordings to true electric blues, this is one of the best of the last year, along with Walter Trout's "Full Circle".

you can put this cd just very near to previous by coco on your shelf. long electric guitar solos, nice songs and good virtuosity. not very good singing, a coloured singer could have done much better. but the whole recording is enjoyable and you can buy it, like i did for this and all the previous by montoya. if you like white blues from british mayall school, this is a recording for you.

Having had the pleasure of seeing Coco live early in 2007, I was awaiting this CD for a while. However, I found the songs on "Dirty Deal" a little repetitious and a little too predictable. Dirty Deal takes a while to get rolling. There are several great songs, such as "Coin Operated Love", "Put the shoe on the other foot" and "Ain't no breakman," which make this CD one which will get a lot of play, but for my money, I liked his 2002 "Can't Look Back" better.

5.0 out of 5 stars As smooth as silk, November 5, 2007
This review is from: Dirty Deal (Audio CD)
This guy out smoothes even Robert Cray and that is saying something!
He started out as a drummer and took up playing the guitar in later years and thank heaven that he did.
He was lead axeman for John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers for a while before leaving and doing 'his own thing'. John has a great eye for spotting talent including a certain Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout and so on. Now I wouldn't necessarily put Coco up with the best of them but he is not far behind.
He has an amazing voice and is skilled with the guitar.
Great late night listening so stoke up the fire, get a bottle of red wine open, some good company and enjoy.
