5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I always take a book when i go on vacation. I read the first part of the dirty girls and this book just continues the lives of the girls it was great i couldn't put the book down. I hope she makes another book with the girls. I reccomended it to all my latina friends i tell them that it's like sex in the city but with latinas which i loved.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, December 7, 2009
This review is from: Dirty Girls on Top (Paperback)
Struggling to finish this book, I have read most of the author's books and am disappointed with what came out of this book. I really wanted to like this book as I loved the first book and enjoy listening to her at speaking engagements. The characters are unlikeable and predictable. I would have to agree with the other comments that the book is filled with gratuitous sex. Lastly, I kept wondering why these women are still friends, as they don't appear to have much in common and some of them don't even like each other. I would say if you are going to read this book, check it out from the library or borrow it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your time and money, August 3, 2008

I struggled to make my way through Dirty Girls on Top and only finished through sheer force of will. The characters are very undeveloped and there was little plot of which to speak. It took me a least a hundred pages to begin to differentiate between the six main characters (I still got Sara and Rebecca confused at the end of the book). There were a lot of sex scenes, all of which were uncomfortable and awkward. The constant dropping of mall brands got to be comical by the end of the book, as did the strange lectures on Hispanic identity politics liberally sprinkled throughout the narrative. My favorite was the part where one character lectures another about human sacrifice in different world cultures as an attempt to minimize Aztec mass killings. The passage concluded with the two copulating at an Aztec pyramid. Oy.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing View of an Interesting Culture, June 20, 2010
This review is from: Dirty Girls on Top (Paperback)
Frankly, I was disgusted by the end of Usnavys first chapter in this book. I was expecting a funnier Latina version of Sex and the City but got something that pretty much was a repulsive view of the fairer Latin sex. I struggled to finish this book and really had to force myself to do so just so I could make sure I really wasn't missing anything. I don't even see why these women are friends because they are all so different, and really don't even seem to like or care about each other unless something drastic happens.

This book struck me as being similar to a porno flick. There is a lot of gratuitous sex with no meaning behind it and furthermore the women seem to lack emotion. I've been through some of the things Rebecca has gone through and the emotion was very much lacking. Overall, don't read this book if you are expecting a funny, girl power book because as much as these women exude that on the surface it really isn't there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Las sucias are back, but are they better than ever?, July 11, 2008
This review is from: Dirty Girls on Top (Hardcover)
I don't like to summarize the plot or go into specific details about each character. If you are reading this book you are more likely than not familiar with the previous one and know the characters.

I had a hard time deciding between 3 and 4 stars. I will say I had a hard time putting it down. I enjoyed the fact that Usnavys was the main narrator this time. She is hilarious and brought a fresh voice to the novel(I did miss Lauren's articles though). However, I didn't feel the same connection with the ladies this time around. Their friendship felt forced and a little contrived. I really didn't see what joined them together except maybe the fact that they have known each other for so long. They didn't seem to like each other at all. I understand that friendships have their ups and downs but it honestly felt like they were brought back together for the sake of a second book. I also thought it was a bit too sexual almost to the point of being gratuitous (trust me, I am by no means a prude). I almost think that maybe it was trying a little too hard.
I was just a little disappointed. Overall, it's a fun summer read and if you are a fan of good chick lit, you will like it. I enjoyed it and will probably read it again just like I have with my other AVR books. BTW I am almost 30 and Hispanic so I know I am probably the target demographic for this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars "The Latina Waiting to Exhale", November 29, 2008
This review is from: Dirty Girls on Top (Hardcover)
Except there are two more women involved and it's not nearly as interesting. The worst part is that I thought this, and right there on the back, was the New York Times' identical description. When a story has already been told before, I'm not so sure it's a compliment.

There was potential for this to be so much better, but it fell way short. I also found some of the character's voices to sound forced ("my nondemoninational Christian background" as Elizabeth described herself--WHO SAYS THAT?) and all of the details on who ordered what food and who was wearing what outfit added absolutely nothing to the story. While this is geared towards female readers, the author should know we care more about the story than the clothes the characters wore and the food they ordered. Oh, and the men are either perfection or the biggest a-holes you'd never want to run across.

2.0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment, August 14, 2009

While I enjoyed the first book "Dirty Girls Club", this sequel was a disappointment. The characters were annoying and self-absorbed. There was a lot of whining. Many of the stories were predictable; I could tell what was going to happen down the road. And too many of the stories wrapped up in a neat package. For instance, Usnavys has a good husband, cheats on him but he easily takes her back. I would have rather seen the book end with her and Juan still separated, working to reconcile but her working on her issues. For the way she acted in the entire book, she really didn't get what she was doing was wrong. I expected more character development for all the characters and didn't see it. I'm glad I didn't buy this book and got it from the library. I will say because I throughly enjoyed the first book I won't give up on this author and will read her other books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dirty Girls..., August 9, 2008
This review is from: Dirty Girls on Top (Hardcover)
This one was an easy read but it was predictable and almost a little obscene. If you're into telenovelas and that type of stuff you'll enjoy it. And even though I think she tried to tackle some important topics that relate to women, especially Latinas, it really just fell short for me.

Her first book is by far her best!

Dirty Girls on Top fails in comparison to Alisa's first book. The "sucias" are simply pathetic and I was annoyed at the characters most of the time while reading it. It's just an ok book.

a truck driving lesbian whose girlfriend hits their kid because it's a boy and she's a man-hater, and yet looks like "practically a man" herself. come on. i get that the characters are homophobic, but does the author have to be too?

2.0 out of 5 stars Stick with the Original, April 30, 2011
This review is from: Dirty Girls on Top (Hardcover)
I really wanted to like this book, especially since the first one was fantastic. However, it was less than stellar. Taking place 5 years later, these women have learned NOTHING and haven't grown haven't evolved at all. I found myself getting so irritated with all of them and the mistakes and decisions they were making because I'd like to think that anyone in their late 20s/early 30s wouldn't be that stupid and make the mistakes. When it comes to sequels or series for books I like the characters to do that (evolve) because that's what people do. I would just read the first one and leave it at there because while the author has other good books, as far as the ones I've read, this is by far her worst.
