it is an excellent value for the price
I split all my wood with it in the vertical position I have a small bench I built that I use in the garden that is the right height to sit in front of it and roll the logs in from my right and split , then toss the split wood to my left into the shed
the wedge is narrow for about 2 1/2 inches then gets wide quick this is very efficient for splitting and if the wood is strait grained I rarely need to get the ram any further into the log , but I split a lot of very curly , curvy, stringy and forked logs It does definitely have the power to push through them

I didn't buy mine through Amazon I got it from a local servicing dealer , check the dirty hands tools website there are a lot of servicing dealers , I paid the same as the amazon price + tax but it came assembled with fluids , and ready to pull the cord and split

after you run it for about an hour check all the bolts again they may need tightening

there have been 3 issues that I read about in researching this splitter, first the recoil starter this was also pointed out by the dealer that if you pull it slow it does not engaged , he said he took them apart that is just the way they are designed , so just give it a jerk and it works fine
second , leaks if you take all the connections apart before adding fluid and teflon tape them they won't leak third the drive coupler make sure the pump is lined up with the motor shaft you can see it , and if the pump bolts loosens and it moves you will hear it change how it sounds stop and let the unit cool down , this happened in my first hour , it seems the paint is thick enough that the nuts bite into the paint and after some run time the paint compresses leaving the bolts loose enough that under a load the pump can shift ,

While this unit originally would not have been my first choice, it was on my 'look at' list. We happened to run across it (at Menard's) on Black Friday for HALF PRICE!. I bought it because of the sale price, but now, after splitting 5 face cord of red and white oak, I am very pleased with it.This unit has split everything I put on or under it, including gnarly 28" diameter oak crotch. It cuts like butter all but the aforementioned occasional very large pieces. It slowed a bit on large highly knotted pieces, but never stopped. The '14 second' cycle time is misleading--you rarely need to run the cylinder all the way to the end to split a log due to the increasing width of the cutter. It spreads the log open in the first few inches. Real cycle time is about 6-10 seconds. All the components are top quality. The Kohler motor sips gas and always starts. The log catcher is an option on most splitters and is great to have. Assembly was straightforward and easy, but requires two people.I do agree with previous reviewers that it could use a motor guard. I just got this splitter at Menards for $899. It was a special purchase item for Menards, and not a regular stock item I was told. First comment, two things that will survive a nuclear war: Cockroaches, and whatever is in the crates they use for these splitters. I have never seen such a nice crate. It was almost a shame to tear it apart. OK, after unpackaging the first thing I noticed is that this thing is HEAVY. My son and I could hardly lift the main beam. Everything about it seems heavy duty, and well made. Amazing for this price point, but I wasn't that surprised because I did my homework and read numerous reviews on line before purchasing. I have used many log splitters over the years, and I have to say, this one ranks right up at the top of the list. I am VERY impressed, and pleased with it. The only negative is that the fuel cutoff, and choke slide levers on the Kohler engine were out of their slots. I had to remove the filter and loosen the nuts holding the housing to slide them back in place. It only took about 5 minutes, and it did fire up on the very first pull, and continued to run flawlessly. Just as an FYI, it says it holds 6.5 gallons of hydro oil, but 5 gallons brought mine up to the full mark on the dipstick. I split some 36" White Ash with it last night. I used it in both vertical and horizontal positions, and it handled it with ease. I highly recommend this splitter. Even at full price, it's still a great deal, but if you can find it on sale, it's the tool bargain of the century!!!!

12/15/2014 Update:
I have now split about a cord and a half, and I am liking this splitter more and more all the time. The log holder is very sturdy, and extremely helpful. Everything seems to layed out just where you need it too.

Unit broke after only 1/3 cord of use. The coupling between the motor and pump deteriorated. Performance wise, it performed ok. Maybe a little underpowered for some pieces. Also small hydraulic leaks at factory assembled fittings.

I also got a great deal on this splitter through Menards and very happy with it. The unit was packed very well and the assembly instructions were pretty straightforward. Other comments have mentioned a leak. You must put teflon tape on all the threads BEFORE you assemble (this is included in the instructions) to prevent leaks. I have used it a couple of times now (about 3 hours worth of splitting) and it has plenty of power to split all the big stringy elm logs and oak logs I placed on it. I have tried it in both positions and had no problems.

You will probably need to get yourself a bucket of hydraulic oil. Make sure you get the best oil for your climate! Biggest challenge was starting the Kohler engine when the temp was hovering around 0 degrees. Had to use a heater aimed at the motor for about 1/2 an hour to warm it up so it would start. Should have done all my splitting before it got too cold! Lesson learned. A very well made splitter and happy with the good deal I got on it.
