4.0 out of 5 stars A slower ride than Snakehouse, but rockin' just as hard, June 23, 2009
This review is from: Dirty King (MP3 Download)
I was fortunate enough to see the Cliks perform several songs from this album at a concert a couple months ago, and I have been eagerly awaiting the CD release to see what other fans have to say about the new songs.

In my opinion, like the first album Snakehouse, this sophomore album takes a few listens to completely warm up the listener. There are a couple songs that grab you right away and demand attention. Among them, the title track "Dirty King," the ballad-like "Not Your Boy," and the catchiest of them all, "Henry." Days later, I still have the chorus from Henry playing in my head.

While they can't all be classified as ballads, the pace on this album is generally a bit slower than we're used to from this hard rocking band. A few of the songs, like "Red and Blue" and "Emily" use string instruments for a different sound than previously heard from The Cliks. Others, like "Falling Overboard" and "Animal Farm" are slower paced rock songs, sometimes reminiscent of classic rock.

In general, upon a first listen, the guitar seems to be front and center on this album, then Jen's bass line sneaks up on you, then Morgan's drum skills smack you in the face. Lucas has steady vocal control in every song, and the layered vocals in "Falling Overboard" make for a nice sound. I've found that The Cliks albums grow on me more with every listen so that soon every song is a favorite of mine. I have a feeling the same will hold true for this sophomore release (that I've listened to several times now) and a new appreciation will begin to grow for other songs on the album.

"We are the Wolverines" is one that really grows on you. It sounds a bit old school rock / rebellious youth / a little bit dark with awesome guitar.

Currently, "Henry" is my favorite, but I'm looking forward to getting the official CD with full liner notes to get a grip on the lyrics. "Career Suicide" already has compelling lyrics that jump out at me: "I'll take your heart if you take mine." --- "Breakdown in defense/ To your consequence. Breakdown to the sound/ I know I hear it now."

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best bands out there, July 25, 2009
This review is from: Dirty King (Audio CD)
I saw the Cliks on Logo and got this CD as soon as it came out. "Dirty King" has become one of my favorite songs ever. The whole CD is powerful and just gets better the more you listen to it. Every song has a different feel to it, from rockers to slower, more intimate numbers. My favorites apart from the title track are "Not Your Boy," "Love Gun," and "We Are The Wolverines." Lucas's voice is so powerful and the playing rocks. This band is hot.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Pick, October 25, 2009

I bought this CD based on this review [...], and on hearing the title track and nothing else. It was a good bet. I had been expecting a harder sound, but I got more than I bargained for with this multi-dimensional album. The songs are mostly slow, but sometimes raucous, perfectly knitted monuments to suffering, survival and love, with Lucas's voice rolling through everything, sometimes like a stream and sometimes like an ocean. The range, and emotion of each song, their differences from the mainstream as well as each other really set this band apart from a lot of the rock that's out there.

I recently re-purchased this album because it was taken from my car along with many others when my car was stolen. at least the thieves have good taste in music.
Anyways I've never written a review before, but i know this album is rock gold. Lucas Silveira's voice is dreamy and powerful. Anyone who enjoyed Snakehouse will for sure love Dirty King. 5 stars all the way!!!

I own both albums: Dirty King and Snakehouse. They are, without a doubt, two of my favorite Rock CDs of all time. Lucas Silveira's voice is incredibly versatile; rough & sexy...clean & sexy. The entire band delivers, and brings it BIG!
