4.0 out of 5 stars A great starter for facts about black history
Although Anderson unapologetically represents a black point of view throughout the book, his stories and mini facts are great gems of information. Critics who argue that the book is poorly researched because they claim Anderson cites has more than one figure for the number of blacks who fought in the Civil War are forgetting that some numbers represent the number of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not accurate, missing references to some important issues.
At first I was impressed with the book, the reading was quite easy. But then "facts" about the number of Afro-Americans serving in the Civil War were confusing. At least three different numbers were cited. The differences in the numbers had a factor of three or more. That simply cannot be the case. Other inaccuracies appeared in the text which lead me to the...

This review is from: Dirty Little Secrets About Black History : Its Heroes & Other Troublemakers (Paperback)
Although Anderson unapologetically represents a black point of view throughout the book, his stories and mini facts are great gems of information. Critics who argue that the book is poorly researched because they claim Anderson cites has more than one figure for the number of blacks who fought in the Civil War are forgetting that some numbers represent the number of blacks fighting at a given point in the war--over all, his number of 200,000 is the generally accepted number. Although he can be one-sided (I think he diminishes the suffering of Indians in some cases), the book overall is a must read and contains some little known dirtly little tidbits about American history.

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids needed something., November 5, 2006

It was amaizing to watch my two teen girls get some of the history of America filled in. They now have a better understandign of the why's and hows of history in the Americas.
My girls are now ready to not allow anyone tell them that they are inferior just because they are Black. They know if they fail it is because they are not working hard enough and/or not in the right place at the right time. They know that they can because despite the Americas prejudice, there were blacks that were so successful that they had to be removed from history by jealous writers of American history.
Thanks for the new pride.

4.0 out of 5 stars short quick and to the point, May 27, 2007
This review is from: Dirty Little Secrets About Black History : Its Heroes & Other Troublemakers (Paperback)
Dirty little secrets by Claude Anderson

Glossed over and misrepresented, virtually the most misunderstood of all subjects ....the history of the black race...a compilation of bits of facts, coincidences, contradictions, sexual exploits and tantalizing stories corrected and brought forth. Be introduced to heroes, warriors, and statesmen (Don Pio Pico, John Horse, David Walker, Khufu, Sabastian and Lari Giles). Others who fought for the people (Thad Stevens, Gen Santa Ana, John Brown, J.C. Harris), and some who were the ward connally and david duke of the day (Davy Crockett, William Penn, Haywood Shepard, John Chaves). Be introduced to arab slave trading to the tune of one million people over a 100 years confused under smothered religious conflicts, the folsom people, the berlin conference of 1876, slave Russians captured by the Germans, the buying and selling of slaves that occupied major places in newspapers....and tons of similar information, well worth the purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars "HISTORICAL DRIVE-BY", February 24, 2008
This review is from: Dirty Little Secrets About Black History : Its Heroes & Other Troublemakers (Paperback)
This book is a must have for any black person, information of ths magnitude is unfortunately not taught in schools but should be. Reading it was emotional torment. There were chapters that made me want to weap, ask why, and others that provoked me to sheer anger. What I like the most about this book is all of the myths that were busted and the reality of our socioeconomic condition as a people even to this very day. I remember hearing people say Howard University was created for "MULATTOS," I thought that was a myth. Simular mind blowing historical references like this will grip your soul, leaving you to feel connected to the people in the book.

This review is from: Dirty Little Secrets About Black History : Its Heroes & Other Troublemakers (Paperback)
At first I was impressed with the book, the reading was quite easy. But then "facts" about the number of Afro-Americans serving in the Civil War were confusing. At least three different numbers were cited. The differences in the numbers had a factor of three or more. That simply cannot be the case. Other inaccuracies appeared in the text which lead me to the impression that the book was researched by different people, maybe students, I really don't know. From an intellectual point of view, the discrepancies are glaring and leaves one the believe Claude Anderson's efforts were disingenuous. If the author cited blacks as victims of the holocaust, then he should have cited references to support this notion.
