Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This is another account of what CIA director Robert Gates called, "the bank of crooks and criminals international." BCCI's early beginnings were humble, but its founders' ambitions were not, and the book depicts the "helter-skelter quest for accounts that led the bank to abuse procedures" early on. While James Ring Adams and Douglas Frantz's recent A Full Service Bank ( LJ 3/1/92) concentrates more on the U.S. operations of BCCI and the resultant domestic investigations, Dirty Money examines its overseas operations, especially in England. What is also dramatically documented here is the lack of intervention by BCCI's auditors, Price Waterhouse, who arguably could have taken a more energetic role early on in blowing the regulatory whistle. This book documents much of the sordid activity--the laundering of drug money, the arms deal financings, the influence peddling and bribery of politicians, deposit fraud, and encouragement and even sponsorship of spies and terrorism. While Dirty Money is certainly an authoritative account, the definitive story of this rogue bank has yet to be fully told, given the ongoing investigation. This book is recommended for all popular nonfiction collections.
