Simply historic,
By Zander Haberstaft (Miami, Florida) - See all my reviews

This album is seminal influence on legions of genres, Hardcore, Thrash, Death and Grind. On the first D.R.I. album, they had an interesting sound, but if I had to describe it in one word: lighting fast. That's not to say it doesn't have melody, some times they slow it down to the Sabbath speeds to emphasize just how fast it really went. This is the album that earned them the title of "fastest band in the world".
But this album is very genre defying. Basically this was one of the first bands to mix Hardcore Punk and Thrash Metal together. Sure you had Suicidal Tendencies, but these guys didn't sound anything like them. Kurt, brother Eric, Spike, and Dennis were the kind of people that listened to Black Flag and Minor Threat, but also listened to Judas Priest, Maiden, Motorhead and Black Sabbath. And yes, the blast beat was invented here. I like all of the D.R.I. albums up until Definition, but this album is one of those gems that you can look back on 23 years later (it was recorded in late 1982), and just listen in awe. And I still got the original self release on vinyl. Blasts by at such a frantic pace you might not even notice that only a few songs make it past the minute and a half mark.

Take a deep breath in. Now, take another deep breath out. Good. Now put this album on and lose your relaxation. This is dirty, rotten and filled with imbecility (is that a word?). F**k yeah. This is D R I!If you can find a faster band than DRI then your playing a 33 1/3 record at 45 RPMs, because it doesn't get any faster. Brutal and uncomprimising, this disc will leave you unsettled for days. But you'll never get enough. With tracks like "Violent Pacification", "Reaganomics", "I Don't Need Society", and "Blockhead", you will be in disbelief of how fast these guys can play. However, they are playing this fast. They're DRI. This disc also contains demo and live tracks, radio interviews, and Enhanced CD features. So, thrash, thrash, THRASH. For the last time: THIS IS DRI!

Dirty Rotten Imbeciles first CD,

Hyperfast pissed off hardcore punk with loads of rabid guitar shredding. The big bonus it has a sense of humour unike the relentless, finger wagging Sociology lecturer type harangues of Pennywise, Ignite etc. Why doesn't just one band play like this today?

I bought this album when on cassette when it first came out and loved it. Once labeled the fastest band in the world, it's truly believable on this album. In fact DRI is probably faster on this album than any hardcore, punk, or thrash band in existence today. Probably the single best album that DRI ever released. For more classic DRI check out "Dealing With It".

skull crushing, tooth loss causing masterpiece,

this record is total rokk. early 80s thrash from texas. this release comprises of the 'dirty rotten ep/lp,' which was originally a self-released 22 song (!) 7" ep. it was then reissued as a 12" by mdc's label r-radical. after that record, we are treated to the 'violent pacification' 7" ep with 4 more mind-numbing thrashers, including the epic title track and three more tracks that resemble the first record. then the cd concludes with two unreleased oldies. 28 tracks in 26 minutes. the closest band at the time that came close to this was the neos...who surpased it in my opinion, but that's another story all together. if you like triple speed punk rock, buy this.

One of the best Hard-core albums EVER!!!,
By
This review is from: Dirty Rotten (Audio CD)
I have been listening to this album for almost 15 years now...and, I'll probubly listen to it another 15 years.
It is one of the fastest, heaviest, most hard-core albums I have ever listen to, besides bad brains albums. This is a Must-Have for any one interested in listening and collecting albums of this era. I was astounded by it in 1990 and still even now. I can not believe how fast the song "block head" is!!!! It is one of the fastest hard-core songs EVER!!! Every single song on here is heavy, Hard-core and most especially....FAST....incredibly FAST,but, not as fast as "block head". besides The Bad Brains...Old DRI..the hard-core DRI are the fastest, best early 80's Hard-core band ever...and this album proves it. This band and this album are my favorite! This is not Metal, or thrash....IT IS HARD-CORE PUNK AT IT'S FINEST!

A classic, seminal influence on thrash, punk and death metal,
By Mattowarrior "Mattowarrior" (Madison, WI United States) - See all my reviews

The very first Dri album is a milestone in the world of hardcore punk. Its influence reaches beyond punk and into the world of thrash, speed metal, even death metal. What started out as two friends jamming in their bedrooms (Guitarist Spike and vocalist Kurt Brecht) became what was to be known as the "fastest punk band in the world". It is an apt name to describe the metal tinged hardcore that burns with an intensity not heard of before 1983 and this album for that matter. Blast beats are a common thing nowadays and many point to this album having the first recorded beats of this type. The music within sounds kind of like if the Dead Kennedys started playing Discharge and Black Flag Songs at twice the speed. Its amazing even to this day how fast vocalist Eric Brecht spits out his lyrics, giving even the "Micro machines" guy a run for his money. Other than that, its is just plain great, catchy, intense music, with a very sharp political/satirical bent, it is one of my favorite albums of all time and has been so since I was 12 years old and bought it on tape in 1990!
