Solid, strong 80's pop metal,

I've always thought of WARRANT as one of the better 80's hair bands, and DIRTY ROTTEN... is their second best album, after the far superior CHERRY PIE. While this album isn't particularly original, the hit ballads "Heaven" and "Sometimes she Cries" are fantastic, and "Down Boys" is a perfectly fun cheesy rocker. My only problem with this album might be attitude. This album in general lacks the trashy fun of CHERRY PIE, or albums such as SKID ROW's debut, or MOTLEY CRUES, DR. FEELGOOD. CINDERELLA and GREAT WHITE might be the most similar comparisons, although this album does have some simularities to much of WHITE LION'S work (although it lacks the complexity). Anyways, for a solid 80's rock albun, this is a good choice. But I recommend casual fans to start with CHERRY PIE, or their GREATEST HITS (which I feel is the best way to go). And, for god's sake, stay away from the awful quasi-alterntave junk of their more recent releases (it all goes downhill after DOG EAT DOG).

THIS ALBUM IS PURE ENTERTAINMENT!,

Warrant's "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich" is an album I would recommend for any serious collection of "metal" music. The songs are energetic, melodic, great lyrics, pretty much everything you could ask for. Jani Lane is a wonderful songwriter and singer, and in this debut album we caught a glimpse of the potential of this great band. I always found it amusing that a lot of Warrant's songs had some lyrics that reminded me of country music. Not to worry, the band played in a way that left no doubt in your mind it was NOT country music. This album is a classic! From the "power ballad" "Heaven" to the tongue in cheek "D.R.F.S.R." this album delivers. As for other albums you may like if you like this band, well, starting in 1998 and moving forward into early this year there has been a phenomenal amount of activity within bands of this genre. I started cross referencing and came up with some great news! I am happy to report that Sebastian Bach (former Skid Row vocalist) has released his first solo album, and to date it is one I personally would rate as a five star album. Lizzy Borden's last release was 1995, Poison's and Quiet Riot's were 1996 so don't count them out yet. As for the rest...prepare to be surprised. The rest of these bands have new or re-released titles between 1998 and early 1999. AC/DC, Accept, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Bang Tango, Baton Rouge, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Danger Danger, Dangerous Toys, Def Leppard, Dokken, FireHouse, Great White, Guns 'N Roses, Heavens Edge, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Kane Roberts, Kiss, Kix, L.A. Guns, Metallica, Motley Crue, Mr. Big, Ozzy Osbourne, Ratt, Saigon Kick, Scorpions, Slaughter, Sleeze Beez, Steelheart, Twisted Sister, Tyketto, Van Halen, Warrant and Whitesnake. So, to quote Quiet Riot, "Cum on Feel the Noize". (For those who are unfamiliar, that's how they spelled it on the album!) You can start right here with this album, Warrant's "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich"

Great first album by Warrant!,

I think that Warrant made a very good debut with this album. It was so over the top in its sound. Although I listen to R&B, rap and urban stuff, this was one of the more unique heavy metal albums that I got to listen to. Heaven and Sometimes She Cries were the power ballads that were hits, but I love the rockers in Down Boys, D.R.F.S.R., 32 Pennies, In The Sticks and the last two. There's a lot of energy and the guitars are revved up on this effort. Jani Lane sings with attitude on here, and the lead guitars in Erik Turner along with bassist Jerry Dixon and the other members provide the backbone for the band. Although Cherry Pie and later albums did well, they are no contest to this debut. It's good to hear that the remaining members still perform today and still wowing audiences!

Rock and ROLL!,

I remember listening to this album when it was new back in my teenage days. I bought it and played it until the tape was practically destroyed. Recently, I picked up the CD as an afterthought. I mean really, I'm an educated adult now... What entertainment could I possibly get from an old glam band from the 80's? Well... I popped in the CD on the way home and almost couldn't believe how it took me back to those "good ol' days". Its some of the best music on the shelf! If you're a Poison or Def Leppard fan and remember the days when music was actually GOOD this is one of the albums to definitely pick up!

Hail to the Hair bands of the 80's. While Warrant was never one of my all time favorite bands, I've always enjoyed their music. Out of those bands made up of pretty boys, spandex, and hairspray, Warrant put out one of the most solid glam pop metal albums of the 80's. Almost every song is a hit."32 Pennies" kicks the album off but it's "Down Boys" that puts the album in motion. From there it's all high gear fun with "Big Talk", " So Damn Pretty (Should Be Against The Law)", "In The Sticks" and the albums title track. The ballads "Sometimes She Cries" and the radio hit "Heaven" shine and add feeling and dimension to this free spirited album. About the weakest tune on the album is "Cold Sweat" which just doesn't measure up to the rest of the album. D.R.F.S.R. is a guilty pleasure that is a must for that 80's metal collection you have tucked away. Or for those of you with the balls to admit you like this stuff, pull out the spandex, hairspray, and crank this one up!

When music was fun,
This review is from: Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich (Audio CD)
Now it just seems music is popular based on depressing and violent lyrics. It used to be that music was genuine entertainment, was fun and made people happy. Now it just has to bring up the things we would rather forget. Groups like Warrant helped us to forget those things for awhile. Rock on and add this one to your collection for funner times and while you're at it pick up Cherry pie!

I will always be a product of the Glam '80's. You can't go wrong with this disc. In fact, buy Cherry Pie while you are at it. Long live hair bands!

... some of the songs are simply guilty pleasures that have somehow found their way back on my stereo! I owned this tape back when I was in high school, and perhaps these days I'm a little more comfortable embracing my cartoonish metal-lite past. From the start, punchy guitars and drumming, breezy and confident choruses, and scorching guitar solos and a carefree attitude are all par for the course on this cheeky debut album. The hit "Down Boys" might be one of Warrant's slickest, best songs ever, and the sappy but heartfelt "Heaven" was perhaps a fitting culmination of what the heavy metal "ballad" was becoming by the late 1980s. Get your lighters out, boys and girls.
There was always an underlying goofiness to Warrant's over-the-top sound, but say what you want, these guys knew the value of a good hook. For every tough-talking tune that tried to display Warrant's Hollywood street cred ("Big Talk," "D.R.F.S.R.," "Ridin' High"), the band never forgot its bread and butter market -- the female teenager fan. "Sometimes She Cries" is as hokey as it gets, but the song probably sounded great at proms all across the country during Warrant's heyday. And this band could rock out, too. "So Damn Pretty" is chock-full of both gritty and amazingly fluid guitar work, while the album's title track is a genuine diatribe against the cheaters of corporate America that's actually effective and relevant these days, and even a bit edgy considering Warrant's normal output. Seminal `80s producer Beau Hill seemed to let the band do its thing on "D.R.F.S.R.," and surprisingly, the album sounds rawer than most of what RATT, who also utilized Hill's producing services, was churning out during most of the decade. So if you're up for a little fun and old-fashioned `80s nostalgia, this now out-of-print CD just might be the way to go. Cool cover, too.

Get Down Boys............,
This review is from: Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich (Audio CD)
Skinny longhaired spandex wearing JD swilling musicians would pretty much sum up these guys. Hair band was mandatory in the 80's, blame it on MTV, they didn't play anything else. Look at The Cure, Human League, U2, Rolling Stones, Van Halen, etc; somehow they didn't get the hair band rap even though they had some of the biggest du's of all. Coming out with both barrels loaded, they launched their first single/video off the album with "Down Boys" the video had them playing on their knees in full leather (it was funny at the time). A great song that I wish the local 80's station would play today even though I never get sick of hearing the classic "Walking on Sunshine" played fifty times a day instead. They followed with "Heaven" which broke them with the female constituency and put them over the magical sales threshold, and finally the beautifully written "Sometimes She Cries" rounded out the three mandatory singles. This album was very well written with great songs like "Big Talk" & "In The Sticks" as it stands the test of time for almost twenty years now. These guys were great live and still continue to tour, although Jamie has a Horton's Donuts Rider in his contract. File this under party-rock; they didn't have to be musical-songwriting geniuses to create great music even though they were pretty close.
