Simply historic,
By Zander Haberstaft (Miami, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dirty Rotten (Audio CD)
This album is seminal influence on legions of genres, Hardcore, Thrash, Death and Grind. On the first D.R.I. album, they had an interesting sound, but if I had to describe it in one word: lighting fast. That's not to say it doesn't have melody, some times they slow it down to the Sabbath speeds to emphasize just how fast it really went. This is the album that earned them the title of "fastest band in the world".
But this album is very genre defying. Basically this was one of the first bands to mix Hardcore Punk and Thrash Metal together. Sure you had Suicidal Tendencies, but these guys didn't sound anything like them. Kurt, brother Eric, Spike, and Dennis were the kind of people that listened to Black Flag and Minor Threat, but also listened to Judas Priest, Maiden, Motorhead and Black Sabbath. And yes, the blast beat was invented here. I like all of the D.R.I. albums up until Definition, but this album is one of those gems that you can look back on 23 years later (it was recorded in late 1982), and just listen in awe. And I still got the original self release on vinyl. Blasts by at such a frantic pace you might not even notice that only a few songs make it past the minute and a half mark.

Thrash Doesn't Suck!!!,

Take a deep breath in. Now, take another deep breath out. Good. Now put this album on and lose your relaxation. This is dirty, rotten and filled with imbecility (is that a word?). F**k yeah. This is D R I!If you can find a faster band than DRI then your playing a 33 1/3 record at 45 RPMs, because it doesn't get any faster. Brutal and uncomprimising, this disc will leave you unsettled for days. But you'll never get enough. With tracks like "Violent Pacification", "Reaganomics", "I Don't Need Society", and "Blockhead", you will be in disbelief of how fast these guys can play. However, they are playing this fast. They're DRI. This disc also contains demo and live tracks, radio interviews, and Enhanced CD features. So, thrash, thrash, THRASH. For the last time: THIS IS DRI!

Hyperfast pissed off hardcore punk with loads of rabid guitar shredding. The big bonus it has a sense of humour unike the relentless, finger wagging Sociology lecturer type harangues of Pennywise, Ignite etc. Why doesn't just one band play like this today?
