5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CD's, October 2, 2005
This review is from: Dirty Street (Audio CD)
I really liked this CD for a bunch of reasons. It's one of those CD's that is so deep and full that it gains more meaning by listening to it over and over.

I love Emme's voice. I love her lyrics, too. The songs in this CD really capture some unique feelings that I could really relate too. The song Rehash captures what goes through my head when I'm really frustrated at something and can't move on from it. The song Disguising Me made me think about who I am and how to deal with people's expectations of me.

After I bought it, I listened to it straight for like a week. I hardly ever do that with music, but this CD is really good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Debut, December 20, 2005
This review is from: Dirty Street (Audio CD)
This is Emme Packer's debut album and i am so shocked with how well it came out. I read that she wrote this album starting at the age of 15 and then produced the album at the age of 17 and 18 years old??? And i'm even more surprised with how amazing her new follow up album is. I am so glad to have found this artist!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars For those with good taste, October 13, 2005
This review is from: Dirty Street (Audio CD)
Dirty Street is a very unique and exceptional album. Not only is it a deeply absorbing manifestation of true emotion and soul. It gives you a rather eminent display of raw talent. I was entranced from the very first time I listened and am now so eagerly waiting for the release of her next album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Homegrown Precocious Emotional Brilliance, August 17, 2011
By
Tony Ukena "TU" (CA, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dirty Street (Audio CD)
There are times when you listen to the naked emotions muffled from the colortura, yet lyrical vocals of Emme, that you just want to give her a big hug. Quite, specifically, I'm referring to the lyric in "Places": "but always have to be, in these places where I don't see me...."

This is a masterpiece, and even moreso when you take into consideration that it came from the precocious creative juices of a young, self taught musician, producer.

For an album to get five stars, the listener is numb in terms of where to begin when describing its impact. Is it the carefree imagery of the album cover of the singer tossing her guitar directly in the air above her? Is the piercing colortura of her voice, or its lyrical projection that converses with the listener. Is it the excitement of the unpredictable motiff's that make the listener feel as vulnerable as the songwriter? Or is it the blissful interconnection of all of the above?

It is in fact many things. Like all great albums, there are many moments, too many in fact to put in any order, like bullets out of a machine gun, some of those moments on this album that touched me:

-The entire song "Places"; and a lyrical and song structure that is so beautiful, so colorful, and poignant, that suspended D major hammer-on; followed by a B minor/A major switch is as unique an expression of longing as any.
-An almost autumnal leaves of hope withering away into a windy wintery premonition from the song "I will not run away"
-The jazzy vocals in "Go" reminiscent of Suzanne Vega's "Marlene on the Wall"
-The sweet melancholy of "The Happiest Day"
-The lullaby feeling of "Dirty Street";
etc. etc.

Like this song lyricists' dilemma on track 3, prior to this album, I was sleeping sound and feeling fine, and then Dirty Street came around and put this music in my mind contributing to many teasing weeknights wide awake playing along with her music instead of sleeping.

When there are many musical moments standing alone that express so much emotion when they're merely notes and chord progressions, one has to proclaim it's relevance.

Similar female artists/vocalists that come to mind when listening to Emme are Bonnie Hayes, Julieta Venegas, Suzane Vega, Aimee Mann, and an occasional dash of Laurie Anderson.
