4.0 out of 5 stars Standells - 'Dirty Water/Why Pick On Me' (Big Beat) 4 1/2 stars, October 28, 2005
This review is from: Dirty Water / Why Pick On Me - Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White (Audio CD)
Obviously, the band's 1966 landmark 'Dirty Water' lp, with their 'Why Pick On Me' album tagged on, this must-have 2-lp's-on one disc release. Great move, Big Beat! Just a couple of noteworthy cuts are their sole hit, of course "Dirty Water", the Stone's "Paint It Black", "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White" and another Ed Cobb-penned gem "Have You Ever Spent The Night In Jail". Total of 19 tracks. Do keep in mind that on the Sundazed label reissue of both these lp's - you get a handful of pretty decent bonus cuts. Oh, for those who have inquired - 'Dirty Water' is in mono and the 'Why Pick On Me' album is in full stereo on this essential CD reissue. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars two classic albums on one cd. protopunk and garage pop., August 3, 2011
By
This review is from: Dirty Water / Why Pick On Me - Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White (Audio CD)
The standells were like many midsixties bands, they were about a mixture of styles and they didn't have a choice about that. record companies would throw things at bands and say 'now record a rudee valee song". in this case they did do that but it's not on this one. And even worse their company made them do a limp hits of 1966 one called the 'hot ones' which was a career lowpoint. But these two albums were classics with a mixture of protopunk songs like 'dirty water' and 'sometimes the good guys don't wear black' are true garage protopunk all the way and they are mixed with songs that are soul rockers 'there is a storm comin'" and other covers from bands like the leaves and the stones and love even. which proves that the boys were a typical midsizties band that was in the fling out at the wall and see what sticks scene. BUt these guys were very talented and could play and sing above most bands stuck in this situation. These two are classics of their genre, the mixed style midsixties rock band , not truly a garage band though. Still songs like 'why pick on me" are true classic protopunk all the way. And the boys would continue this formula for their other classic 'try it' the first album is in mono < I personally dislike mono even if it was recorded in it and would like stereo versions too but that's ok because that's all you're gonna get.
THe second album is in stereo and both are on here without bonus tracks. for that you have to get the sundazed versions. The sound though is pristine and they did a great remastering here.
