5.0 out of 5 stars Lorenzo the Conqueror
Kevin Eastman is a shrewd man. Lorenzo Sperlonga was already a rising star when he approached Eastman (publisher of Heavy Metal Magazine, inventor of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, husband to the absurdly beautiful Penthouse model and artist's muse, Julie Strain) to ask him if: "he would mind looking at some of his work." Eastman knew what he had in Sperlonga. Now,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Losing the battle against censorship, May 12, 2008
This review is from: Dirty Works (Paperback)
Within 30 seconds of flipping through this book, I noticed that a lot of the images in this book are censored. I've seen a lot of the art on Lorenzo Sperlonga's website, which is what prompted me to buy this book, and I was hoping for a book of the same images, only larger than a computer screen.

What I got was a book containing censored versions of my favorite images. And it's not just genital censoring, the blood in at least one image has also been removed. This censoring at least blends into the art, but it is still very noticeable. This was extremely disappointing, considering not only the content of images on his website but also the fact that I discovered this artist in Hustler magazine. I fail to understand why it's okay to feature uncensored images on his website (which isn't even guarded by a simple "You must be 18 to view the images on this site") and in magazines but it's not okay to leave them uncensored in a book which would be sold only in "Adults Only/erotica" sections in bookstores in the first place.

If you like Sperlonga's art in its original form, you're better off saving your money and sticking to his website to buy prints of your favorite, uncensored images.

Now, many of us know as well, from sea to shining sea. This is the second book of Lorenzo's incredible works to be released. The most beautiful women in the world are not the stick figures in Vogue, they are the beauties in between the covers of this new book. If you like your nude ladies in Sci-fi scenarios, modern settings, or fantasy and even humorous, you can have it all. Two words that could be used to describe Lorenzo's style are diverse, and imaginative. There is an incredible rendition of a woman in leather and chains hanging on a trellis called "Ivy", that is so photorealistic you will wonder if it is a painting at all. The detail in the trellis is incredible just on its own. This is one erotic and highly imaginative piece of work! Another pin-up, called "Thorns", looks like it should be on the side of an old World War Two fighter jet. Lorenzo's work shifts easily from futuristic to the Old West, forever stimulating the senses. There are many great artists of this genre but Lorenzo Sperlonga is somehow beyond the genre. His work is provocative and exciting on numerous levels. The first book is also awesome (check out my review) and hinted at things to come from this evolving artist. In the back of this book is a glimpse into the artist's personal life with photographs of family and friends. One of the photographs is of soldiers in Iraq enjoying posters from this book. What a beautiful footnote to this stylish book. Nobody does it quite like Lorenzo, and this collection is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE DIRT, August 10, 2007

This review is from: Dirty Works (Paperback)
Dirty Works is a great book and was very well put together. Lorenzo is a very talented artist that has a certain knack for illustrating sexuality to it's fullest potential. My favorite piece is the very first one, "silk blossom" featuring my favorite gal Aria...The step by step demonstration of sorts gives the reader a very well built foundation into what takes place during the creation of a painting...There are many pin-up artists out there that are very talented and Lorenzo is one of the few just like the angels for his calander series that sits high above the rest...It is one of those books that you do not want the visulas to end, yet you cannot wait to start it over again to experience the women that overwhelmingly dominate page after page...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleased at the beautiful art, disappointed by the censorship, July 19, 2010

This review is from: Dirty Works (Paperback)
This is one of the better erotic artists I have ever seen. The book is only a disappointment because of censorship. Why buy a book of an artist if parts of the art is blurred out? I probably wouldn't have had I known, but I didn't read the reviews. I shall in the future. If you buy a book of erotic art, you know what you're getting into, so there is no need to blur parts of the images that are in our own anatomy. They're just genitals, we all have them, get over it.
