Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-- It is fascinating to watch as the strange building shimmers, disappears, and reappears on the vacant lot at the end of Dewberry Street. Tyler and his best friend, Freckle, have no idea what will happen when they finally find the courage to enter Quigley's Bike Shop. The boys agree to keep the store, and the mesmerizing man who lives there, a secret. But Tyler is in for tough times when he is paired with the class bully, known as the Viking, to research Leonardo da Vinci. When the Viking discovers Quigley's, and as he and Tyler learn more about the artist/inventor, they begin to realize that the wizardlike shopkeeper could be Leonardo himself. Woodruff's story combines mystery, suspense, and an element of danger into a rollicking good adventure. Readers will be drawn into the smoothly building plot and find that the past can be truly exciting. Woodruff nicely integrates historical facts, valuable lessons in relationships, and issues of self-awareness into an invigorating story that will have readers disappearing with the book as quickly as it appears on the shelves. --Jana R. 4.0 out of 5 stars The Disappearing Bike Shop, January 9, 2004
A Kid's Review
This is a good mystery book to read. Its about a disappearing and reappearing bike shop in a vacant lot. A kid name Tyler and his best friend Freckle see a bike shop walking on the way home from school. They have walked that street many years and not once have they ever seen a bike shop. They don't know if they ever will get brave enough to go into Mr.Quigley's bike shop. They promised Mr.Quigley to not tell anybody about his secret bike shop. What you don't know is that Tyler is in for a rough time. He gets partnered with a bully at school name Viking. They have to work on a Leonardo da Vinci project. As viking starts to hear about the bike shop Tyler and Freckle start to think about artist and inventors and think a wizard type shopkeeper could be Vinci himself. As the book starts to turn into a more mystery book Mr.Quigley gets more suspicious. Woodruff is trying to trick you in some points. You will have to find out for yourself to know what happens next in the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars How Large Builds Disappear in Blink of an Eye., January 9, 2002
A Kid's Review
Tyler and Freckle always rode their bike through town, by the bike shop. They would do this a lot, but one day when they rode by the building it began to rise and disappear before their eyes. When the building reappeared they took their chances and entered Quigley's Bike Shop. It seems that Quentin Quigley does more than bike repair. The boys discovered a secret room filled with unusual artwork and inventions. They wondered about Mr. Quigley's true identity. Before they could find out, Tyler and Freckle got trapped in one of Mr. Quigley's inventions. They traveled back through time wondering if they would be stranded in the past forever.
