Excellent start to a writing career,

This book is a great trip into a mind that is slowly falling to pieces. I think it is appropriate to compare this work with Allan Guthrie's (whos blurb sold me on this book). I don't think Flexer is quite at the level of Guthrie, but boy is he nipping at his heels. This book has many laugh-out-loud moments and the ending is brilliant. I think this book deserves its kudos, as it delivers on many levels. The lovers of dark, disturbing noir should enjoy this one and should included Flexer in their "read everything he publishes" category.

A twisted novel,
By Brian Townley (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Disassembled Man (Paperback)
Following in the footsteps of Jim Thompson, Nate Flexer has written a chilling crime novel, with enough humor to keep it enjoyable. The narrator, Frankie Avicious, is incredibly warped, yet you can't help but root for him as he wreaks havic throughout the town of Huerfano, Arizona. In addition to traditional noir themes, there are elements of surrealism and slapstick comedy. But nothing will prepare you for the ending when Frankie gets all that he deserves, and then some.

This is a disgusting work of art. Frankie is about as creepy as they come. Great book! Reads at a fast pace. I love it. But, you feel like you need to shower after reading. I guess that's the author's desired affect?

Insanity in it's purest form,

Try to think of a mixture between Jim Thompson, Raymond Chandler and Joe R. Lansdale, while they have gone totaly insane, meanwhile someone like David Lynch tries to make a movie out of it.
The story of Frankie Avicious beginns pretty straightforward, but the longer you read , the stranger it gets. Frankie leads a really unhappy life. Working in a slaughterhouse under the worst circumstances one can imagine. After work he goes straight to a sleazy bar, where he is drinking his head off until it's time to get home to his fat and pill-addicted wife. One night , an old friend visits him unexpected, which brings a whole new quality into his life. Unfortunately to the worse. Even so the book is filled with horrifying violence, disturbing suspense and one sick event after the other, the narrator tells the story of his broken life with a brilliant and dry humour, that you have to laugh out loud all the time, even so it comes out more and more hysterical. Be forewarned: this is nothing for the weakhearted, but if you're willing to take a ride out of the ordinary, this debut novel by Nate Flexer may be the right choice for you.

A Dark Gem,

Jim Thompson would gladly claim Frankie Avicious, the protagonist of Nate Flexer's THE DISASSEMBLED MAN, as one of his own. Avicious is one of noir's classic lost souls, born bad and moving through a life that's a waking nightmare, one with lots of spare room for the ones unfortunate and unlucky enough to cross his path. Nate Flexer is the real thing. THE DISASSEMBLED MAN is a disturbing read, tightly written, and the initial offering and one of the best from NEW PULP PRESS. Check out NEW PULP's line-up too. You won't find the usual suspects there, but rather a whole other reading experience.

Great Read,

Downright disturbing material and I can't get enough of it! Nate Flexer's vivid narrative is a compelling juxtaposition with the dime store mayhem and bloodshed!

great independent crime fiction,
By Ron Bradford (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Disassembled Man (Paperback)
New Pulp Press is a small publishing company that is putting out some unique and disturbing novels, The Disassembled Man among them. Nate Flexer has written a riveting debut novel, complete with a grotesque slaughterhouse, a dangerous stripper, and a satanic salesman. I recommend this book for those who crave something a little bit different from all the run-of-the-mill mysteries that currently fill the shelves at the big box bookstores.

New Pulp is better pulp,

This guy is good, and the press, New Pulp Fiction, is just what I've been looking for: an outlet for original. quirky noir stuff that hasn't found a place in the mainstream. I'm a big fan of Jim Thompson, but Nate Flexer is almost as original. He's funny, really funny; and violent, really violent; and he's got the courage to take oedipal fantasies beyond the usual cute hints and possibilities. He's also a helluva writer. He does a great job controlling an unreliable narrator: giving false leads but also giving us enough to suspect them. Like Jim Thompson, his narrator uses cliches to debunk false pieties and to depict a world both hypocritical and indifferent to injustice. The ending of the book is amazing. You don't see its lyrical power coming after all the violence and slapstick, but you won't forget it. But this book.

Wickedly Dark!,

A wickedly twisted read with a solid dose of ironic humor. I literally could not put this book down! Like the evening gives way to night, the main character spirals into a darkness that the author seems all too familiar with. Nate Flexer shows some serious muscle!
