I've read a number of EMP books over the last couple of years. This is easily the most useful.

Other than a financial collapse, I believe an EMP attack is the man-made disaster most likely to befall the United States in the near future. It's a relatively lost-cost, low-tech method of eliminating the United States as a world power. A nuclear-tipped missile launched from a cargo ship in the Atlantic and exploded a couple of hundred miles over Kansas would knock out the power grid and destroy most of the electronics throughout North America.

An EMP attack would be a TEOTWAWKI event. It would be prudent for every family to try to preserve some basic electronics that would be useful in the aftermath -- short wave radios, walkie-talkies, ham radios, LED flashlights and lanterns, battery chargers, solar panels, etc.

There are many books on the effects of EMP. The theory is well understood. Unfortunately, there's very little solid data on protecting from EMP.

Dr. Bradley's book explains how, and why, a Faraday cage works. He provides a clear understanding of why grounding is generally unnecessary. He tests the effectiveness of various makeshift Faraday cages. He even provides references for surge protectors and UPS equipment that may offer reasonable protection against EMP surges introduced through the power lines.

This is a very practical guide for individuals to protect critical electronics from an EMP attack. It also deals with the effects of solar storms and provides guidelines for general preparedness. I've already used the information provided here for my own preparations. I would highly recommend this book.

This is a good ultimate source book for the topic of EMP. I've read many pieces and parts of the topic in many magazine articles, columns, and other books dedicating a brief chapter to the subject. If you are looking for an effective, comprehensive, one stop source, this book by Bradley is the one.

Bradley's works are not really for hard core preppers. You won't find any canning recipies, ballistic tables, or instuctions on how to build a lean-to. What you will find is common sense advice that will help you and your family prepare for the diaster that is most likely to occur - a hurricane, flood or earthquake. In "EMP Attacks and Solar Storms", Bradley goes beyond where he went in his essential "Handbook to Practical Preparedness for the Family", which is a must read for anyone concerned with diaster preparation. In typical Bradley fashion, you'll find tables, space for notes, and an introduction that reads like a highly condensed version of his "Handbook" - practical advice about preparing your family for the unexpected. Beyond the intro, there is a lot of information about the effects of EMP, and, as the old saying goes, you will learn something new. For instance, I had always believed that any vehicle built after about 1980 would be rendered inoperable by an EMP attack. Bradley debunks that myth, as well as others, in this short book.

But I was left less than fully satisfied by "EMP Attacks and Solar Storms". I expected more detail about such things as food storage, alternative power generation, or how many chickens you would need to ensure an adequate supply of eggs. There are many very insightful tidbits in "EMP" but don't expect it to be your survival manual. It simply isn't. And, I don't think Bradely intended it to be - which makes the title a bit misleading, at least to me.

Those tidbits, though, are worth the price of admission. For instance: "Effective preparations should therefore focus on replacing these failed national infrastuctures with micro-scale infrastructues that will sustain your family.

The book is titled "Disaster Preparedness for EMP Attacks and Solar Storms". It does a reasonable job of describing what EMP and solar storms are but is nearly worthless for the preparedness part. The descriptive part provides about 5 pages of knowledge with a lot of "fluff" for filler (such as the photos of an obsolete Air Force testing facility, power lines, snow plows, and cell towers). The preparedness part is at the level that would be expected of two college sophomores discussing the topic for ten minutes in a bar while half drunk; it is a trivial recitation of the standard FEMA type information but is incomplete, misleading and at times actually counterproductive. For example: regarding water requirements during a disaster he repeats the standard two gallons per day per person. So far OK. His plan for providing potable water is to either "install a Seagull IV water purifier on the kitchen tap" or to "boil water on gas stove". This is not practical advice. In the EMP / solar storm scenario with large scale infrastructure collapse why assume that water will be available from the kitchen tap? Further, in such a scenario it is very wasteful of your precious stored fuel to boil water. A better answer is ordinary Clorox bleach. A 3 quart bottle of 6% sodium hypochlorite costs about $2.00 and will treat nearly 4800 gallons of clear water. Remember "drop per pint" as the recipe for treating clear water. For cloudy water filter through clean cloth (such as a tee shirt) and double the bleach -- let sit for an hour or so. If using a soft plastic bottle place the cap on loosely and squeeze some of the treated water out of the cap and around the threads to decon that part of the bottle. His level of analysis and practical advice is amateurish.

The one part that I found useful was on faraday cages. That part of the book provided sound, practical advice. That was the part worth 50 cents.
