About the Author

E.L. Montes was born in Puerto Rico but raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She currently resides in Philadelphia with her husband, Alex, and their English bulldog. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Legal Studies. She works full time as a paralegal for a mid-size law firm. Although she loves the legal field, writing was always her passion. Her first love for books began with the Goosebumps series as a child. After that she read anything and everything from poetry to short stories. She was passionate about the fictional world and intrigued by the way an author could pull you into a story with just simple words. As a hobby she started writing her own poetry, daily journal entries, and short stories. She actually dreamed of being a journalist and even went as far as researching colleges to earn a degree in Journalism. At the time, major newspaper companies and magazines were having budgets cut, and after careful thought she settled on another major. When she finished her degree, she felt like something was missing. She continued to write for several years, working on different story ideas, but never finished. Disastrous is her first novel. More About the Author

USA Today Bestselling Author, E.L. Montes (Emmy Luz Montes) lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, Alex, and their English Bulldog name Butters. She has a Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies.

Ms. Montes worked several years as a paralegal for a mid-size law firm. She had always loved the legal field and found it to be interesting. She more so "secretly" loved to write. Disastrous was her debut novel which was released October 2012. After the release of her second novel Ms. Montes took a huge leap, by leaving her fulltime job to focus on her writing career. She has and continues to write characters with flaws. Ms. Montes said, "No one is perfect and neither are my characters. It makes the storyline a bit more realistic, in my opinion. But I also feel no matter who you are or the life you have lived, everyone deserves someone to love and be loved. I'm a hopeless romantic, and enjoy writing a story where my readers feel like they're living and feeling every emotion."

The story started off strong, with strong characters and a great story line. However, what could have been great story quickly deteriorated into a bad episode of Jersey Shore. The maturity level of the main characters was appalling and destroyed any potential Disastrous had. Mia complained in the beginning about her failed relationships, and at that point in the book you think she had bad luck with men, but once her relationship with Marcus really gets underway, it becomes blatantly obvious why her previous boyfriends were jerks. Emotions from both Mia and Marcus were all over the place and totally overly dramatic. If Mia truly acted like a law student and Marcus truly acted like the #1 attorney in Boston, this story could have easily rivaled Naked and Bared To You. Unfortunately , it fell way flat.

I purchased this book as soon as it was released and was excited to read it. What a letdown. First, totally unrealistic start - I understand that fiction is just that, not real, but for me a story needs to be at least a little believable. The main character, Marcus, is about 29 and has never, ever dated. Really? Come on......And he meets Mia at a bar (she is very drunk) and immediately knows that she is the one that he wants to finally "date". He asks her to date him after telling her he has never dated. Just very odd. Marcus tells Mia a few days into the relationship "Thank you for coming and giving me a chance. You don't know how much it means to me that you were willing to do this." Do what!!!! Date a devastatingly handsome, rich, well known attorney that was warm and kind...... The book went way to fast - if the author would have spent some time building the relationship and or attraction between the two characters, I probably could have enjoyed the book more. The premise of the story is good, interesting, etc. but again, the way the characters get together is just so unbelievable. You can easily figure out in the very first part of the book what the big secret is. I am pretty sure the author did not intentionally put it out there - it was just very simple to figure it out based upon the writing. Would have been nice to build that up a little more too vs. letting it all out in the open right away. I felt this book was very rushed - if the author would have taken a little more time to develop the characters and the story, I think I could have really enjoyed it because the storyline had potential.

E.L. Montes gave us greedy readers an extremely good first effort. I read the reviews before I purchased the book and based on the varying opinions I knew this book was worth a shot. I did take to heart that some reviewers felt the first 30% if the book was sluggish.

It was a bit sluggish BUT how the heck is a writer supposed to set-up such a complex set of circumstances and inform the reader for what came in the second half of the book? The first third of this book did manage to gain my interest enough-so that I needed to find out what was to come for Mia and Marcus.

Mia is a very strong young woman. Not to say she isn't vulnerable; she is very much so and rather sad in her self-imposed loneliness. She is a very loving woman who has lost her family and is an open heart awaiting the type of family love she once had. She is harboring a heart that weeps for the brother and father she'd loved, then lost.

Marcus; he is a mess. He lives a duo-life that for all appearances, he's chosen. This reader suspects that there is much more to the story of Marcus's 'service' to his 'Uncle Lou', than we readers currently know about. How is it that a very successful lawyer manages such duality? Surely what he does at night has to catch up with him eventually? I like his brother and I'd have to wonder if he and his brother aren't working on bringing down the evil rule that we readers know to be 'Uncle Lou'. Jimmie (Marcus brother) is a very good character himself and I loved that he seems to treasure his young daughter above all else. The family dynamics in this book are excellent.

When Marcus and Mia met it was as if kismet had kissed their souls. At the end of this book we are favored with an 'out-take' of Marcus's thinking when he first meets Mia in Club 21.

I have been eyeing this book for sometime now so when I saw it was on sale for .99 I scooped it up. I have mixed feelings about this one. Did I have my expectations too high? Maybe. Don't get me wrong, I liked it. I had to know what was going to happen next, but there just wasn't enough detail for me. I would have liked to seen more push from Mia. She caved too quickly on more than one occasion. There was just something missing. Not enough angst maybe? I didn't connect with the drama as deeply as I would have liked. I felt for the characters, just not as strong as I should have. I hate being on the fence about a book. I don't like not being able to pinpoint why I'm straddling the fence.

So, this review will leave you just as confused as I am...sorry. LOL I liked the story, just needed a little more oomph. I will have to give it a few days and re-read maybe then come back and let you know if anything changes!
