Book Description

January 11, 2002
The biblical book of Daniel has fascinated readers for centuries. Does the intrigue center on flashy apocalyptic writing, the oh-so-very-human stories, or the mysterious futuristic narrative? Whatever the appeal, all Daniel explorers inevitably bump up against some literary curiosities and prophetic perplexities along the way. Fortunately for every Daniel fan, both admirers and questioners, we now have Discernment from Daniel. Here the prophecy’s allurement and its secrets are revealed for us in a substantial—but thankfully entertaining—narrative. There’s even a splash of poetry, humor, and dream reverie to add a pinch of spice. Then, we close with a quartet of Appendices and a thorough Index for further historical study. Discernment from Daniel uniquely mixes the inspirational and the academic—a rare blessing. What the prophecy has to say in our new millennium is nothing short of profound, so it’s nice to hold a book that lights the way with some solid text and smart writing.

I am the author of six nonfiction books and one volume of fables. The latest production is Oracles from Olivet, the Eschatological Jesus. Previous publications include Discernment from Daniel published in 2002 and Revelation for Regular Readers, both by PublishAmerica. Next came Operation Revelation: A Teens Script for Earth's Final Curtain (with co-author Jan Ledford). My first published Bible study effort was Revealing the Revelation, released in 1998 by International Scholars Publications, now a subsidiary of Rowman and Littlefield. Each of these works is still on the market. An earlier publication, entitled Forty-four Fun Fables, is a collection of sermon-starters and expanded illustrations for speakers and is now out of print but available by special order.
Other publications include over 100 newspaper and magazine articles, poems, and essays in such periodicals as Reflections, Pulpit Digest, The Navy Chaplain, The Harbor Watch (New York City area), and The Bluejacket (Memphis, TN). I have variously served as editor and staff writer for several chapel and church newsletters. In addition, I have written and directed three locally produced plays. Several of my poems have been published over the years.
I hold a BA degree from Baylor University majoring in English and religion with a minor in history and a Masters of Theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Supplemental coursework includes Marriage Counseling, Rape Crisis Counseling Certification, and Psychology of Personality and Adjustment.
I served as a pastor for two years prior to joining the U.S. Navy. My work as a Navy chaplain spanned a 28 year career until retirement in 1995 in the grade of Captain. I have also taught junior high, high school, and adjunct college courses in religion, history, psychology, and business ethics. I preach regularly and frequently have the opportunity for other public speaking engagements. I currently teach an adult Sunday school class at First Baptist Church, Franklin, NC. My retired years afford more time for professional writing and my avocation as artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book..., December 7, 2004
This is a great book especially for those who love the Bible prophecy books. I will admit that I am a little bias. I had the pleasure knowing Mr. Calaway while he was in the service. As the command chaplain, I attended several Bible studies that he conducted, one of them on Daniel. He used the his notes that he used for this book for teaching the class. I found the class enjoyable even though I was a teenager as well as reading the book years later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book offers complete insight on Daniel, November 22, 2002
This review is from: Discernment From Daniel (Hardcover)
Most of us grew up loving the two "Bible stories" in Daniel: the Hebrew children in the fiery furnace and Daniel in the lions' den. In "Discernment From Daniel," Bernie Calaway takes us into the full press of the Bible's book of Daniel. Yes, the traditional stories are there, but the full richness of Daniel is uncovered as well. In his usual thorough style, Calaway helps us understand the historical perspective of everything Daniel
touches...from the ancient Babylonians, Hebrews, Greeks, Persians, and Romans to the exile itself.
But don't think you're only going to get history and stories. Daniel is a rich apocolyptic writing...Calaway's specialty. (See also his book "Revealing the Revelation"). If you've read the Bible before, test yourself: do you remember Daniel's vision of the statue, the great tree, and the four beasts? (Chapter 5.) Did you understand the references to the seventy weeks? (Chapter 6.) If it's a realation to Revelation you're looking for, hold onto your hat. Calaway doesn't only discuss it, he makes sure that you understand its relevence for today, right now, on the street where you live. (Chapter 7.) Appendices, a bibliography, and index complete the work.
Students of the Bible and seekers alike (not to mention the curious) will find "Discernment from Daniel" most worthy of their time.
