Won't Get Fooled Again,
By Jorge Lucero (Vicksburg, Mississippi) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Disciple (Audio CD)
Some reviews I have read of this album speak of Disciple's change in sound as if it were intended as a direct insult to them and God. Hmm...let's investigate. Having seen Disciple in concert three times (most lately about a month before the release of this CD) I can reassure all the skeptics that they have changed none and neither has their message. Considering that Kevin Young (lead vocals) stops the band in the middle of "Wait" (track six on "Back Again") with a Bible in hand to tell the audience about God and the necessity of His love and salvation I assure they have not hedged a bit on their message. As for those of you who burst out crying when you heard a piano (GASP!) on the first track of this album are behaving quite the same way Bob Dylan "fans" did when he switched from a solo acoustic format to a band format-even to being labled "Judas" by so-called fans (try the 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert for evidence). I would say that just because Disciple doesn't play straight ahead metal any more doesn't speak ill of them- the world has enough metal and not enough good serious Christian musicians whose only mission is to glorify God, not themselves. The band has alway been clear about this (for you "By God" fans try the track "Not Rock Stars" from that album). Make no mistake, Disciple's message hasn't changed and neither has the band, just the knobs on their guitar amps.

Wow. Finaly, not only do we have here, in Disciple's self titled release, excellent Xn subject matter, but also the artistry and musical talent to back it up. Makes quite an impressive package when put together. Vocals and rifs astound, every track a winner (no filler), easy to get into, on the first listen, from start to finish. It may be simple music for some, but you know were you are going and you will enjoy the ride. Well worth the $.

Do NOT LIsten to the guy below....,
This review is from: Disciple (Audio CD)
Disciple may be hardcore Christian, but they are still Christian. If you actually bought the CD, you'd realize that in the first song, each verse is taken from the Holy Bible. No, they are not shying away from saying Jesus or God, they just want to reach out to a larger crowd. Just think about Switchfoot. I think Disciple's career has taken a turn for the best. Buy this CD and see what I mean. You won't be disappointed.

Driving Positive Rock,
This review is from: Disciple (Audio CD)
In all honesty, I had never heard of Disciple or their sound until I happened across "Game On" on the television. I enjoy bands like Pillar and Flyleaf, so I thought I'd give this self-titled disc a shot. Although "Game On" is not on this album (look for "Scars Remain"), I did find plenty of things to like about this band. First of all, this album is pure, driving hard rock with a postive message. According to other reviewers, Disciple has greatly cut back on their mentionings of Jesus in their songs. However, one look at the liner notes and you'll find Bible verse references to each and every song just like most Contemporary Christian acts list. To pigeonhole a professing Christian band or give them a bad review simply because you believe their lyrics are watered-down, fail to say "Jesus" enough or are secularized is wrong. These guys are legitimate with their faith and profess it through their lyrics without an in-your-face push of Jesus' name.
Overall this album is solid. The band appears to be very comfortable with their heavy riffs and prog rock sound. Highlights of this album include the pounding "The Wait Is Over," "Shine Down," and "Backstabber." "Rise Up" has a wonderful anthemic quality to it along the same lines as Pillar's "Frontline." It makes you want to pound your fist and scream right along with it. The hidden track, "Tribute," is a nice addition and is dedicated to our guys protecting us overseas. There are a couple of slower melodic rock tunes on the album, but rest assured that the bulk of the material would fit in nicely with bands like Seether, Saliva, and Nickelback. If your idea of Christian music is along the lines of Steven Curtis Chapman or Twila Paris, this ain't your Christian music. However, if you like to rock out a bit, Disciple will not lead you astray.

Much more Mainstream and not as solid, but still good,

The lyrics on this one didn't drive me into the ground as "This Might Sting a Little" did. I have listened to this CD through twice and have not heard the name "Jesus" once. Maybe I just missed it, but it wasn't blatently obvious.
Also, I didn't find the guitar rock as heavy as the other CD I have. This was kinda disappointing. I do like the CD, and I am giving it a good review, I am just trying to be honest. I was hoping for something closer, heavier and harder than their previous work, but this isn't it. This is a good sounding CD, good rhythm and popular songs. 3-4 of the tracks get regular play on the local radio station here in DFW. I am happy to have purchased it and I will be looking forward to their next piece that comes out, but I hope that it hits a little harder than this one.

Any rock fan will like this CD. I was kinda leary on it at first, but after hearing the lyrics I knew that Disciple definitly is a christian band. The music is great the lyrics are touching. There isn't much more I could ask for from a cd. It isn't perfect but it is still one of my favorites.

Must-Have CD Of The Summer,
By Rock God (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Disciple (Audio CD)
It seems the only people giving this bad reviews are those who liked the older Disciple material more. While I'm not familiar with any of their older discs, I can definitely say that this one is incredible. Apparently, the older Disciple sounds was that of a hardcore band..which is ok I suppose, but I'd rather hear straight up rock anyday. This is kind of a Hard Southern Rock meets Grunge meets Alternative Metal if you will. The production value soars, as does the music. The first song kicks it off with the whole hard southern sound and is completely hard rockin while track #2 owes more than a little to Sevendust. With not a bad song on this cd it will be well worth every penny you spent on it. So, if you're looking for a GREAT summer cd then pick this up, along with the new Breaking Point.
*Best Song* - Shine Down

These guys have polished their sound and they have really matured. They have stepped their music up to a whole new level. I was fortunate to get the limited edition CD/DVD that also contained tracks from "Things left unsaid" CD. I would love to see these guys cross over in popularity. Even though they may not say the name "Jesus" every single song is God-inspired and God-focused and they still have Bible references on the lyric sheet. Out of all the CCM bands I've heard (and I've heard alot) these guys have become one of my all time favorites!!! I want to collect all their CD's!!!

anthemic arena rock in your face,
By
This review is from: Disciple (Audio CD)
Let's pretend I'm in a band. My band has done a few mostly DIY or small label albums. We have a devoted following and pretty much a signature sound. A big label offers a chance to have a bigger budget and more publicity then ever before. (by the way we are a Christian band.) Is a bigger budget and more publicity wrong in themselves? We decide no and go ahead with it for a change. We go less hardcore and screamo and veer into a more arena/modern hard rock sound. Say if Loverboy mixed their hard rock anthems with a little mudvayne and Korn. The lyrics are more, say, parabolic and less in your face Jesus Jesus Jesus. Which there is nothing wrong with and we still do this to the Glory of God. Some fans write us off. Some don't like the music style change even though some had complained we always sound the same before this. We know what our hearts are befored God though and we hope people give us a chance. If you honestly don't like this we are ok with that. For those of you who continue to support us, we say thanks.
After reading the reviews on this I responded this way to make us all think. Disciple has changed. Is it wrong? I don't see how. And I love the big arena rock sound here with the polish that a big lable gives. They still have a grittiness to it that makes it a classic hard rock album. All IMHO of course. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could. |
