Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"We have come to imagine that discipleship is somehow an 'extra.' . . . Yet to be a Christian in New Testament terms is to be a disciple. There are no two ways about it."

With honesty and grace, beloved author Elisabeth Elliot guides you to a deeper understanding of discipline. It is not merely self-improvement or developing specific routines. Discipline defines the very shape of the believer's life.

This book explores areas of discipline that you may not have considered before-the disciplines of:

-body
-mind
-place (honoring others)
-time
-possessions
-work
-feelings

Being a disciple means answering yes to God's call, gladly surrendering yourself to the Master's orders. Discover how to place every aspect of your life under God's authority and find happiness and freedom there.

Elisabeth Elliot, one of the outstanding women of present-day Christianity, is the author of more than twenty books, including Passion and Purity, The Journals of Jim Elliot, and These Strange Ashes.

I'm an avid Elisabeth Elliot reader and stumbled upon this classic while purchasing another one of her books.

Once again, Elliot goes back to the basics; outlining through her own experience and scripture what a disciplined life should look like. Her practicality and ability to share the truth in a clear and concise way are once again the foundation of her writing. It was refreshing and challenging to be reminded that a disciplined life doesn't happen spontaneously, but is rather a slow and painful process that requires daily dying to self and living for God. Elliot outlines chapter by chapter the quadrants of life and the benefits of being disciplined in each respective area. If you want to be challenged to see the eternal perspective in everyday life, this book is a must read!

This is a really good book where Elisabeth Elliot draws from her own experience in surrendering to God. She speaks about how surrendering to discipline is something that will make life better rather than giving it all up. And like all of Elliot's books, it is incredibly well written.

This book cuts right to the chase for the Christian. Elliot puts forth the truth with a punch. I was personally challenged on how I live my life. As I read and reread this book it focused me on what is really important and that changed my life for the better. I refer to this book often and quote it more times than I can count. Excellent investment for any Christian wanting to grow and mature.

I read alot of christian books. I have read none more times than this one. Elisabeth Elliot hits upon all the areas of one's life and applies daily principles of obedience to each; work, time, place etc...

It would not be possible for me to recommend a book more highly.

Elisabeth Elliot has earned her reputation well with works such as this. Her matter-of-fact approach to personal and spiritual discipline makes the living of a disciplined life seem simple. All aspects of her philosophy are, of course, thoroughly biblical. A must read for any Christian seeking spiritual maturity.

The content of this book is strong. The book is well written. I appreciate all that Elizabeth Elliot has taught me. My only complaint with the book is the style of the reference notes. I believe having good notes is a major key of any good document. Unfortunately, the quotations aren't given any kind of parenthetical references in the chapters, are not numbered, and all the references are given at the back of the book. This means that keeping track of which quotation belongs to which reference note gets very cumbersome.

So beautifully written. A great read for any Christian woman who wants to improve the way she lives each day. I often struggle with vices, fears, and just plan emotional exhaustion, so for me this book was very inspiring.
