5.0 out of 5 stars My second Bible
Since I got my copy of Dr. Ray Guardeni's book, "Discipline That Lasts a Lifetime", I have mentioned it to many of my friends with children. They like what they see in my own pre-teen son. I have loaned it out to many of my friends. They are thrilled with the results they've had based on practicing the down-to-earth advice given by Dr. Gaurendi. It's practical, humorous...

3.0 out of 5 stars Have You Listened to Dr. Ray on the Radio?
If so, and if you've done so for any length of time, you may find (like we did) that this book is of little value to you. You'll already know much of what he writes!

If you have NOT listened to Dr. Ray (on the radio or through any his great audio and video resources) then this may be just what you are looking for! I think it would be great for new parents,...

Gaurendi. It's practical, humorous (to help take the edge off of stressful situations), and respectful towards the all important job of parenting. God bless this man for NOT taking the road of modern psycho-babble and for actually using his own brain, spine and faith to give us REAL tools we need. This book helps me in many ways how to show my child that he is loved, and it gives me tools, based on actual situations Dr. Guardendi has delt with, which I need to deal with my own son and our own life challenges. I would recommend this to parents with children of ALL AGES!

5.0 out of 5 stars Written from real life experience, January 17, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Discipline That Lasts a Lifetime: The Best Gift You Can Give Your Kids (Paperback)
I purchased this book after seeing a presentation by Dr. Guarendi at a local church in the area. I was just so impressed by his professionalism and realism. He was not trying to press textbook situations on real-life families. (I am a psychologist, by the way.) He uses common sense. Dr. Guarendi is clearly an expert on child rearing both professionally and personally. I would recommend any of his books, but this one especially. Discipline is so important and overlooked by many parents, until it is too late. I did not like the question/answer format of this book which reminded me of Dear Abby. While the information is very good and useful, it's rather awkward trying to locate particular information due to this format. Dr. Guarendi's other books are also worthwhile and some of the information is covered in them as well so looking at them may be of interest if you have a specific issue.

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical, filled with refreshing humor, July 6, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Discipline That Lasts a Lifetime: The Best Gift You Can Give Your Kids (Paperback)
After having been a teacher for many years, reading plenty of parenting books, stressing out, you name it, this came as a breath of fresh air. I was chuckling all the way through the book as Dr. Guarendi debunked one so-called "expert" after another. He uses practical wisdom as the father of ten children to show you that you can get through the maze of parenting unscathed....and your children can, too. He clearly shows that nobody is ever perfect and this will not irreparably harm anyone. The basic ingredient for all childrearing is just plain common sense....which is the way all children used to be raised.
The reviewer who claimed all Dr. Guarendi proposes is simply spanking and more spanking ought to read this book more thoroughly. When I read that review, I could hardly keep from laughing...this individual would do well to delete that review and really read the book before he publishes something so absurd and obviously erroneous. The teacher here would have to give an "F" for a poorly written report. :-)

Guarendi is LOL funny (really) and provides super insightful advice on how to raise our kids--from toddler to teen--in this crazy world. This is a must-have book for all parents who are looking for real common-sense advice. I guarantee this will become a generational favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Parenting Advice!, November 22, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Discipline That Lasts a Lifetime: The Best Gift You Can Give Your Kids (Paperback)
Dr. Ray gives parents the "OK" to teach, nurture and discipline their children without the nagging fear of what psychological damage those actions may cause! He combines humor with good common sense that so many parenting books are lacking. As you read, you can feel the love he has for his own children, which makes you feel the love you have for you children even more. Great Book! I've recommended it to many friends!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finially down to earth childrearing information, March 16, 2006
This review is from: Discipline That Lasts a Lifetime: The Best Gift You Can Give Your Kids (Paperback)
This book is the best. It gives you permission to be the parent you know you can be. The type of parent our parents or grandparents were. Its time to quit listen to all the "psycho-babble" and step up to being a parent. There is no quick fix here but instead a reliable down to earth parent(who happens to be an expert in his field of psychology) pulling out all the stops and telling us we don't have to be perfect parents but we do have to do our best and that will be enough. With his guidlines and suggestions mixed with a great deal of humor and personal stories( he is the father to ten adopted children!) you will find yourself laughing and relating to his stories. You can't go wrong with this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars The only poor review came from someone who did not read the book!, January 7, 2007
This review is from: Discipline That Lasts a Lifetime: The Best Gift You Can Give Your Kids (Paperback)
This is a great book that truely applies common sense to child upbringing and can be applied regardless of religious background.

If you look at the all of the reviews from the one individual who gave a poor review, it looks like he did a topic search and left a bad review for any book he thought came from a Christian about child rearing. Although I have not read the other books that he gave 1-star to, based on this review I would be wary of believing any of the reviews he has written.

Read the book you won't regret it.
Another good book the author wrote is "You're a Better Parent than you Think"

Dr. Ray has a very funny and common sense approach to child rearing and it's very refreshing, particularly for those of us raised in a relativistic culture that stresses temporal happiness above all else.

Recommended.

As I was reading this book, it told me hints that I had never thought of before or heard before. This book puts it in terms that will stick and be easy to impliment.

My friend who has three kids talked about this book over the holidays and read parts of it that she was applying to her home situation. It was so funny and practical, I couldn't resist buying it for another friend who is a new parent, of course reading the book myself before passing it along. I don't think I've laughed so hard reading a book in a long time. The author's advice is wonderfully mild these days when the headlines are full of horribly abused children supposedly being disciplined for bad behavior. Nothing like that here. My friend who first told me about it swears that copying the encyclopedia works magic.
