One of the frustrations in my life is that I have been a christian for 1/2 of my 43 years and you would think that I would be farther along on my journey to become a disciple. Mr. Hughes, the author of this book, shares his thoughts on becoming a man of God, and some areas that we need to focus in on. In chapters like, "The Discipline of Marriage", he points out ways that men stumble and encourages us to avoid the pitfalls that have tripped so many up. This book takes a hard line on sin, but doesn't preach. It encourages us to be strong and courageous and gives practical steps for keeping the victory over sin. It is an excellent book to use in a men's discussion group. You can read a chapter each week, read the scriptures which are referenced and discuss the end of chapter questions. I recommend this to every man, 15 and up.

Forget Wild at Heart! Buy this book instead. It calls for radical discipline as the means of pursuing godliness in every area of life. With a good blend of biblical teaching, true-life stories, and practical advice, Hughes leads men to embrace the spiritual sweat necessary in following Christ. I like this book so much that I'm currently leading the men in our church through this study. It's one of (if not the) best books for men on the Christian market today.

It is easy to see why Kent Hughes' book has been such a best seller. The author has compiled in these pages an invaluable collection of helpful, spiritual advice for men in the 21st century. I am not aware of a more comprehensive volume that covers so many topics within one cover.

Hughes identifies the following life areas: relationships, soul, character, ministry, and grace. He then provides specific disciplines that each cultivate a more dynamic Christian lifestyle. His advice is Biblically sound, culturally relevant, and easy to understand.

This book will be very helpful to any man who desires to grow deeper in his devotion to Jesus Christ. While it is only an introductory work, it provides a solid foundation on which to begin a more structured approach to discipleship. I recommend it highly.

R. Kent Hughes hits the nail on the head. The world in general and the church in particular is suffering from a lack of godly leadership. When pastors and longtime church leaders are falling into sin on a daily basis, Christians need a wake-up call to spiritual living. And it's the men who must take the lead.

This book is ten years old, but it has never been more relevant. Mixing biblical exposition with practical application, Hughes gives men a prescription for righteous living.

As hard as it is to take, this veteran pastor speaks to men on their terms. Carefully organized, The Disciplines of a Godly Man, goes through each phase of a man's life. It delivers Scriptural guidelines on issues like lust, pride, responsibility, and marriage.

Keep this book on your nightstand. Its a must-have for Christian leaders, including preachers, educators, and laymen. Men, take The Disciplines of a Godly Man and lead in the way God has called you to lead.

I initially read this book about three years ago and thought it was a great book. I am now going through the book again but this time with a group of guys in a study. The study questions are great to help you apply the reading. R. Kent Hughes holds no punches and bases all of his information on Scripture. If you desire to be a Godly man, I HIGHLY recommend reading this book and completing the study questions.

R. Kent Hughes provides men with some good solid Christian fundamentals to live by. I thought the reading was relatively easy and provided many points of discussion with my small group.

However - some of the negatives about the book revolve around the terrible examples used by Hughes as "fact". One example would be the lesson on "tongues" and his assumption that a mid-western reporter caused a revolution in China... This is hardly the case - but written to be as fact in his book. Furthermore - Hughes tends to utilize statistics as a measure to re-inforce his points. Unfortunately - much of his data is now quite dated and seems rather silly to utilize in reinforcing his points. In this day and age when politicians are quoting the latest poll - it seems rather bitter-sweet to find a Christian writer using polls to complicate his message.

Overall - the book is good basic info - but there are other books that will provide more punch for the paper.

This book is definitely a cut above the typical shallow self-help books that one finds in Christian book stores these days. It is deep, biblical, extremely well written, and has lots of fabulous illustrations. It also steers clear of the questionable theology found in the best sellers by Joel Osteen and John Eldridge. Readers will find the survey of well known Christians and the books that mean the most to them in the back of the book to be very fascinating and will spur you on to read other great books. I have led several men through this book and it has always been very profitable.

I consider myself a mature Christian and this book challenged me in such a way that I now realize I'm barely scratching the surface of what God has called me to be. I am leading a men's small group through this study and it has completely transformed us. As a direct result of the call to discipline ourselves, we have committed to reading the Bible through in a year, becoming members in our local church, carefully guarding the media we allow into our minds, and holding each other accountable at a level we just didn't touch before. As soon as we finish the last chapter (next week), I will immediately turn back to page one and start over.

Discipline is an essential building block of the Christian man and a this book is a valuable tool to develop it.

This book has been an awesome asset in my personal Bible Study and in the leading of other Godly men. Hughes touches on issues which will make or break the mold of a Godly man. He stresses the importance of the discipline which will free us to be the men God intended for us to be. If we are going to be used by God, "it is going to take some Holy sweat." I recommend this book to anyone who is man enough to allow the Spirit to test him and try him -(Psalm 26:2).

Very Biblically sound!

Excellent resource for any man desiring to begin the journey from a passivity to maturity and maniliness. This book provides a solid framework of the essentials of living and being a Godly man in the midst of a society that tries to blend a mans role with a womans and a womans role with a man. The author provides the basics of what a man should and must do to deny himself, take up his cross and follow Jesus.
