Editorial Reviews

Review

"This thoughtful and challenging book should be studied by leaders of worship, lay and ordained, and be the subject of discussions and workshops for congregations."
—Dr. Alec Wyton, Manhattan School of Music

"Calvin Johansson sets forth a strong case for a worship that arises out of the gospel. Standing in historical tradition, he sees worship as the gospel in motion—the gospel told, acted out, and sung. His argument for good musical forms as a means of delivering the gospel deserves wide and careful consideration."
—Dr. Robert Webber, Wheaton College

"A thoughtful, thought-provoking, and prophetic statement about the nature of church music in our time which avoids the thoughtless and superficial by raising basic and primal questions."
—Dr. Paul Westermeyer, Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary

"Calvin Johansson is a prophet with an important message for pastors, worship leaders, and church musicians of our day. He calls us from our preoccupation with novelty in music styles and instant gratification of pleasure needs to a sober evaluation of how music can truly be. . . . Johansson's message challenges pastors and church musicians to think again about how and when church music truly glorifies God and edifies human beings."
—Dr. Donald P. Hustad, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary -- Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Church Music, April 17, 2000

This is an excellent book outlining the proper style for church music. It is surprising that the author takes a classical approach to music coming out of the Assembly of God background. I especially appreciated the examples of good hymnody.

The only shortcomings are 1) there was too much of an emphasis on chant for my taste, 2) also the book is lacking in scriptural support for the author's assertions on music style.

This is highly recommended for church leaders and music ministers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone absolutely must-and I mean must- read this book, May 19, 2005
This review is from: Discipling Music Ministry: Twenty-First Century Directions (Paperback)
This is the most challenging, incredible, deep, true, well thought out case for the utter destruction of everything that is wrong in 'worship' services today. And that is coming from a person who was just required to read nine books for my first semester of worship leading school I just wrapped up (its a spirit filled non-denominational school by the way). This book is in many ways like 'Worship Evangelism' by Sally Morgenthaler, but 'Worship Evangelism' is like an experienced surf boarder, while 'Discipling Music Ministry' is the tsunami. 'Worship Evangelism' seemed to have a tendency to support its case by running polls and doing market research on what unchurched Chester Molester and Suzy Satanist would enjoy doing in church, while 'Discipling Music Ministry' revealed an intellectualy yet spirit filled view of what they need, which is not a song and dance routine or melodramatic hype. I mainly recomend this book to other spirit filled believers because there is a saying that goes something like, "You do'nt fully know what your side of the story is until you've heard the other side's". I highly recomend both books though because they both basicaly have the same overall message. However, 'Worship Evangelism' is a loving gentle nudge toward a more biblical music ministry, which will leave you thinking, "Hmm, maybe I'll implement those ideas someday. I know, I'll make it my New Year's resolution!" where 'Discipling Music Ministry' will unexpectedly detonate on you, leaving shrapnel and body parts lying everywhere, while still allowing you to desperately limp towards change.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must book for worship team, specially worship leaders!, February 3, 2009

true, way to much emphasis on chant.. so much that I felt that he broke the first commandment just like what he wrote.
I'm assuming his ears prefers chant than "pop" church music, .. does that mean chant becomes "pleasure" for him?..
I don't have anything against chant, in fact .. I'm gonna listen more chant. I'm pretty sure I need it after reading this book.

I was wondering why he left out the hedonistic tendencies on chant (tho it is not popular in our culture)

I will also share this with our music ministry and specially worship leaders in our church.

When I read this book, I can't help thinking of the song "Heart of Worship" by Matt Redman .. the whole time *for both positive and negative*

IF you are a worship leader, buy this book PLEASE!
