A DISCO CLASSIC FINALLY ON CD!,
By
This review is from: Disco Choo Choo (Audio CD)
Laugh all you want...chances are that if you're reading this review you're either a Nightlife Unlimited fan or you simply can't believe that someone would ever write a song with such a ridiculous title. But it's true and, believe it or not, it's been a classic since it was first released in 1979! "Disco Choo Choo" was a minor disco radio hit and received heavy club play, but it was never released as a single in the US. Two of the three remaining tracks, "Dance Freak & Boogie" and "Love Is In You" were released as singles and received considerable club play but no radio support. This superb album, originally titled "Nightlife Unlimited", has not only been out of print since 1980 (I've worn out four vinyl copies myself) but it hasn't been available on CD until just last year. But the wait was worth it: you get classic Montreal disco in full-length extended album versions and some great remixes that were only previously available as promo or hard-to-find singles. Since Amazon supplied no track listing, here's what you get: 1) DISCO CHOO CHOO (9:26) ..... 2) DANCE FREAK & BOOGIE (7:41) ..... 3) LOVE IS IN YOU (12:22) ..... 4) PRECIOUS MOMENTS (6:05) ..... 5) DISCO CHOO CHOOO (remix, 7:09) ..... 6) DANCE FREAK & BOOGIE (remix, 7:38) ..... 7) LOVE IS IN YOU (remix, 7:04). Although Nightlife Unlimited has released several albums since, none have equaled this one in terms of fun, danceability, or memory-invoking grooves. The lyrics are far from cerebral and the lead vocals aren't the strongest, but it's the music itself that takes center stage: "Disco Choo Choo" and "Dance Freak & Boogie" are a percussionist's dream that explodes with dozens of rhythms that magically all blend together into tracks that dare you to stay seated (trust me, you won't be able to!) while "Love Is In You" and "Precious Moments" are very pretty songs that are not only great to dance to but are a pleasure to listen to as well. Whether you're a serious disco collector or just want pleasant dance music, this superb album is definitely one to add to your collection. Get this CD before it, too, goes out of print!

Silly title. Silly song. Silly album cover. Yes, this is unapologetic club disco music, circa 1979. The title track is repetetively irresistible. The entire album is thrummy, drummy, beaty and meaty, with terrifically heavy clangy-bangy percussion. "Dance Freak & Boogie" will numb you into mindless submission. The music, beats, melodies and angelic female vocals are reminiscent of Boris Midney's sound. This album was recorded by many of the same people who created Erotic Drum Band, and if you enjoyed the wonderful male vocal on that group's "Love Disco Style," you'll also like "Love Is In You." Producer George Cuccuzella went on to work with Lime and Suzy Q, among other groups.
(I've never seen a vocal credit given on EDB albums, 12" singles or CDs, but the voice here is too similar to that vocal to not be one and the same. If anyone knows the answer to this mystery, please share. Another question: I believe EDB was originally an Italian production that was exported to Canada and then to America on Prism Records. Does anyone have more concrete information on EDB?) Nightlife Unlimited was produced for dancing, and for fun. It's enjoyable, upbeat and even uplifting. Dance and live!

This is fun music. Great to dance to and of course it brings memories of the sound heard in the clubs several decades back. That's all there is to it.
