3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Bit of Something
An underrated record from an underrated band, "All Disco Dance Must End In Broken Bones" is a worthwile second album by Whale and one that better translates the pre-milennium musical fusion. This swedish band wisely mixes rock, pop, hip-hop, lo-fi, dance, trip-hop, folk and everything else to provide a refreshing, cutting edge record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still fresh, October 11, 2008

Reviewing this album in 2008, even with ten years having been past the release date, Whale's second release sounds new and refreshing in this era of stale radio play. Wonderful electronics play trip-hopishly with the instruments and Cia's voice. This sees frequent time in my stereo.

This album deserves to be much more successful. All songs are decent, and I can listen to the songs Juice, Roadkill and Losing Ctrl over and over again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Less Insanity Than "We Care," But Still Rockin', October 28, 2003
This review is from: All Disco Dance Must End in Broken Bones (Audio CD)
Whale's second--and presumably final--album, 1998's "All Disco Dance Must End In Broken Bones," finds the wonderfully nutty Swedish group playing it safer this time around. While the band went completely *bug-wild* on their outstanding debut disc, "We Care," they keep things more or less straightforward on "All Disco Dance," with only the awesome track "Losing CTRL" showing any signs of Whale's outrageous rock from their first album. Otherwise, there's less shouting, very little or no trace of sexual wordplay in the lyrics, and a much more rounded feel to the tracks. Still, Whale are/were an amazingly talented band, and they still whip up some pretty cool tunes on this disc, like "Crying At Airports," the funky "Smoke," the fun "Puma Gym," and the catchy "2 Cord Song." Cia Soro (formerly Cia Berg) still knows how to get your attention with her seductive voice, the band still rock out, and the production & studio effects are impressive. As I said in my review of "We Care," I'm profoundly disappointed that Whale appear to be no more, 'cause they were just plain sensational, a major shining light in the modern rock genre. But I'm happy that they made two excellent albums, and, maybe one day, they'll do the right thing and come back! "We Care" is definitely my favorite of the two Whale albums, but "All Disco Dance Must End In Broken Bones" is also great, and if you're gonna get "We Care," then you gotta get this one, too. Long live Whale!

This album has enough personality, weirdness and originality to qualify as a solid, consistent effort among the current pop scenario. Its sound has some resemblances with Garbage, Massive Attack, Sneaker Pimps, Pixies or Nine Inch Nails, all great bands either. Although interesting, this record is also a bit uneven, since the first half has a lot more energy, wit and inventiveness than the second, that falls into more common, formulaic and predictable territory. It is still a strong listen nonetheless, and a fine release after the debut "We Care". It also has one of the greatest titles ever. It`s worth a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars great, new, versatile album, July 8, 1999

It's hard to make a good new album in the 90's because there are so many great classics. But Whale's new album is probably the best new album I've heard in a long time. The songs have a great beat and combine wrap with many other types of music. I really reccommend it.

Whale are back with a new full length studio album. Produced by Brad Wood (Pumpkins) and Chris Potter (Verve) the Swedes really tell you where it's at. All thrillers no fillers. My 3 favorites are "Crying at airports", "Deliver the juice" and the stunning "2 chord song". END

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most underrated bands of the 1990's..., March 17, 2000

...But then again all of the really good bands are. Anyway, this is one of the best albums I have ever heard in my life. Every song seems to combine catchy (Sometimes even beautiful) melody with such great instrumentation, which mostly consists on excellent guitarplaying, megacool soundeffects and groovy drummachines (And sometimes real drums, too!); Not even mentioning Cia Soro's beautiful, sexy vocals. I truly liked all of the songs, which's very very rare... Not a song here was even a little bit under incredible. One song (My favourite on the album) was much beyond incredible though- The excellent closer "2 Cord Song", which creates a magnificent collage of sounds and is actually a biting satire on the music industry. The track later trasfers into "Subcultures In The USA"- A short, yet cheeky punk song that examples the, well... USA subcultures brilliantly. Whale are definately one of the best bands to ever come outta Sweden, right after ABBA and The Cardigans... Even a bit before The Cardigans actually. The thing I like the most about "All Disco Dance Must End In Broken Bones" though, is that it perfectly combines so many 1990's styles and sounds- The Cardigans, Garbage, The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Portishead, Massive Attack, Moloko, Broadcast and Blur are only a very few names that crossed my mind whilst listening to this wonderful recording. So, for conclusion- If you want a tourdeforce through the styles that became the signature of the 1990's, or even if you simply can't get enough of Garbage's two albums, buy this record. Trust me, you're gonna be grateful for this for the rest of your lives if you'll do so.

All Disco Dance Must End in Broken Bones being Whales 1998 release and final studio album is a mix of alternative rock and radio friendly rock. I really wanted to love this release since I absolutely love their first album "We Care". However this is an uneven record with great tracks such as "Crying at airports" and then really boring tracks like "Go Where You're Feeling Free" and many tracks that have that in between feeling like "2 Cord Song". Allmusic gave it 4/5 and NME gave it 4/10. All the lyrics are included in the booklet along with a bunch of photos of the band. 3/5.

2.0 out of 5 stars There is a reason this is not widely available, April 5, 2009
This review is from: All Disco Dance Must End in Broken Bones (Audio CD)
I loved Whale's first couple of singles, and indeed their first album "We Care."

To be honest, I hunted this down at some length but only to find one or two songs that ANY of the first album's appeal. Less guitar, less yobbo cheering, less Tricky...

This is screwed! Beware, unless you for some reason liked Whale's ballads best...
