respectful to the classics, but missing the fun,
This review is from: Disco Forever (Audio CD)
Here comes that blatant disco lover Dimitri again, barely waiting for that hovering glitterball to stop twinklin' before cranking out his second mix of the year, the 3-cd set Disco Forever. The prior release A Night at the Playboy Mansion cleverly packaged the spirited fun of the 70's sound while featuring edits of old originals and never-realize-it modern cuts. Right away you'll notice the lean towards jazz-inclined pieces ("My Love Supreme," "Chameleon") and a respect for underground "classics" that better replicates the sound of days past but comes off quaintly dated. Unfortunately, this set lacks the exuberant party thrills of Playboy Mansion. It's six songs in - the Spanish cover of "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" by Charanga 76 followed with Crashers' "Flight to Jamaica," before the music finally begins to catch hold of your hips. It's largely hit and miss from there. As for three discs worth of this stuff, at least you get value; two contain the unmixed full-length originals and some respectable exclusives not worked into the mix, a thorough track history lines the cases, and over three hours of music. Disco collectors have plenty here to work with, but Forever lacks the magic to spark an evening. Grade: C

This is an ambitious project and an interesting concept: the DJ provides not only one disc of continuously mixed songs, but includes 2 additional discs of his source material, in separate tracks. The experiment is not wholly successful. The mixed disc out of necessity cuts many of the songs short to fit into an hour or so of CD time, and the song selection is sometimes flat. The other two discs contain a variety of late 70's dance tracks. Some are cheesy ("My Love Supreme" vocals, "Chameleon," "Let's Make Love"), and others are fantastic. Nearly all of the tracks are lesser known songs or covers by rarely heard artists. As a source for rareties, this collection excels. It includes some very, very good tracks ("You're So Right For Me," "We're On Our Way Home," "Love Hangover" instrumental) and some incredible finds that work magic on the dance floor. "Flight To Jamaica" approaches Chic in the rhythm guitar department, "I Don't Wanna Lose It" sends out a yearning, bittersweet statement about desire atop a great arrangment, and the Walter Gibbons' rehaul of "Just As Long As I Got You" has to be one of the best dance records of the last 30 years. The bass vocals, hypnotic lyrics, and dramatic instrumentation are stellar.

I am biased but Dimitire get's it right every time. This box consists out of a mixed cd and two cd's with the uncut/unremixed verions. Basically, you are dealing with pure disco here, a lot of Deja vu. If you hate disco, don't bother to buy it.

Another great collection of difficult to find tracks on the Barely Breaking Even label. A splendid collection of disco and soul tracks you won't find on the average 'disco compilation'. The mix of Dimitri is, however, less interesting than his mix "A night at the Playboy mansion". The latter mix gave him more possibilities to remix the old funky disco tracks. So, the most fun are the 2 unmixed cd's.

If you're looking for underground disco look no further...This compilation by Dimitri is by far the smoothest and most exoctic collection of disco you can buy, if you like the genre and don't buy this cd you're making a mistake!!!!!

There are some good tracks here, but, no matter what the liner notes say, the hispanic remakes of disco classics are somewhere between totally superfluous and only for the fanatical disco collector, because musically they don't amount to much. Three CDs, and between them probably less substance than the (excellent) Night at the Playboy Mansion.

No, baby, this ain't no Sacrebleu. Leave it to the French (or at least those who hail "from Paris," as Dimitri is from Turkey) to salvage disco. Whether it be nouveaux discoheads like Sebastian Leger or those remixing extant disco like Bob Sinclar (whose Cerrone remixes are top-notch), disco is back and bigger and badder than ever. Dimitri has proven to be a major player in this scene, particularly with his Playboy Mansion mixes (the first of which is hands-above better than the second, which seems hastily thrown together). This lovely three-cd package gives listeners more motion for the ocean. Although there are a few dogs throw in the mix (e.g., "Flight to Jamaica," "Que Tal America," and the especially odious "I Got a Thing"), the gems outshine them (e.g., "Barely Breaking Even," "Love Hangover," "Let's Make Love," and "Chameleon"). Dimitri's mixing leaves a great deal to be desired. While the music is continuous, some of the segues are clumsy and impede the flow of the music. Novices to the neo-disco movement would be better served by Dimitri's "A Night at the Playboy Mansion" or even one of the discs from the Paris is Sleeping Respect is Burning series. These mixes would give listeners more cushion for the pushin', at a cheaper price, to boot. Or, as one reviewer recommended, grab Larry Levan's Paradise Garage mix or even something from the Loft series.

DIMITRI RULES!,

Once again Dimitri has released an amazing compilation. This follow up to "A Night At The Playboy Mansion", once again proves that no one does disco better. As a disco lover, it is so refreshing to hear some tunes I've never heard before. And what great tunes they are! There's not a bad one in the bunch. Finding this CD is kind of like finding "buried treasure" for a disco lover like me. I can't wait for Dimitri's next CD. This is a great deal for the money and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it!!!

This is true Underground Disco The way it should be with a live band and violins. Not like your typical CHEEZY RADIO disco, radio stations put on every weekend. If your a true disco lover I recomend it. Remember Underground Not Commercial. Have something no one else has.
