4.0 out of 5 stars A good overview
This is maybe one of the best disco anthologies but the world of disco anthologies is far from perfect. The track selection is good but as usual we've got an irritating mix of 7" versions, 12" versions and album versions. So, the gems are some Motown 12"s ("Don't leave me this way", "Love machine", "Heaven must have sent you", "Down to love town", "Upside down") and other...

There are a few minor problems with this CD. First, the track listing is incorrect. "Best of My Love" by the Emotions does not appear on this CD. Instead, you will find "Got to be Real" by Cheryl Lynn in its place. Second, there is a laughable edit in the track "If I Can't Have You" that was made in an effort to 'extend' the song. Not sure why the record company...

4.0 out of 5 stars A good overview, April 20, 2006

This is maybe one of the best disco anthologies but the world of disco anthologies is far from perfect. The track selection is good but as usual we've got an irritating mix of 7" versions, 12" versions and album versions. So, the gems are some Motown 12"s ("Don't leave me this way", "Love machine", "Heaven must have sent you", "Down to love town", "Upside down") and other extended tracks ("Heaven must be missing an angel", "Got to have loving", "H.A.P.P.Y. radio", "I love the nightlife", "Stomp", "Turn the beat around"). The bonus here is an unreleased mix by Tom Moulton: Jimmy Ruffin's "Tell me what you want". About "If I can't have you", I'm not sure but it seems that the 4 minute version on the cd is the original promo extended (on the soundtrack the song is 2:50). The really down side is "I will survive" clocking at 6:30 (the 8 minute lp version with an early fading !!). The liner notes by Brian Chin are superficial but the informations about the songs are interesting and the photos are not always the photos we see everywhere else (e.g. the hot photos of Donna Summer and Bonnie Pointer, or the superb "Heaven must have sent you" 12" blue sleeve with its original typing error on the timing). So this is an anthology sometimes good and sometimes not but it's not a bad start for a house party.

Not sure why the record company thought that was necessary, but if you are familiar with the original recording, it is very distracting. And last, while the liner notes are great (Brian Chin), the accompanying photos are horrid.

Those minor problems aside, you will find the remastered, extended versions of "I Will Survive", "Don't Leave Me This Way," "Last Dance" and "Heaven Must Have Sent You", as well as an eight minute!! version of Don Ray's "Got to Have Lovin'" (a little too much of a good thing). Not all of the songs are the extended versions, but there are enough rarities here to interest discophiles. The sound on most tracks is quite good. If you can get this on sale, and you want the remastered versions of these dance hits, go for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Turn this ~ Disco Gold UP!, July 21, 2005
This review is from: Disco Gold (Audio CD)
The intense track listing is more than enough reason for any Disco fan to purchase this collection of songs on CD.

The sound on the CD is crisp. Should you remain a die hard DISCO fan, this collection is perfect for you to relive memories of the glitter ball era and prance around your home in your platform boogie shoes.

Most of the legendary Disco artists are found on this collection. Hopefully in the near future, they'll release a Vol 2. 3. and 4!
This is the ideal double CD to start up a solid "DISCO" collection in your own personal music library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some "hard-to-find" gems are here!, February 19, 2006
This review is from: Disco Gold (Audio CD)
This collection: DISCO GOLD finally did something no other CD has done. A 1978 Norman Whitfield penned hit by Stargard, "Theme from Which Way Is Up" is now on an American CD!
Previously it was only available on a very crowded compilation from the U.K.
Until this CD arrived, you could only hear Stargard's funky burner at the end of Richard Pryor's film of the same name on your television.
Thank you Hip-O Records!!!
Other tracks of note: the 12 inch version of Bonnie Pointer's Motown remake "Heaven Must Have Sent You". "Brazil" by The Ritchie Family..............and it's inspiration "T.S.O.P." by MFSB featuring the Three Degrees.
There are 30 tracks in all! Many #1 chart hits like Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way" and Rose Royce's "Car Wash".
This is THEE definitive disco collection! Highly recommended!

2.0 out of 5 stars Gold plated disco, January 3, 2010
This review is from: Disco Gold (Audio CD)
This is a good compilation, but don't buy it if you want to use it with any modern playback method. It will not load into your mp3 player without a hassle. This disc is copy protected and for those of us with Ipods that makes it worthless overpriced junk. Pretty silly if you ask me. You can make a compilation yourself. Who needs to pay and get something that won't work.

5.0 out of 5 stars The question is..., August 11, 2005

The question is, are these the long versions found on the original albums, or the short single edits? Looks like a great line up regardless.
