(not known to the world then)were already hits in our local discotheques (some 20 years ago). burning the dancefloors almost nightly. back then it was only available on vinyl's. so i guess most people who are having all the hits or even singles on this album could be on vinyl format, right? most people would still stick to their old vinyls, but hey... having this collection on CD won't harm right?? at least the clarity is there and more durable. most of us in that era would wish a compilation of this sort to be out in the market one day. well..your prayers are answered. since it's out... what are you waiting for... don't regret later as there might never be another compilation as great as this ever !!!

one comment from me is that it would be great if it was release as a 12"singles compilation.

5.0 out of 5 stars DANCE THE BEAT TO THE DISCO HEAT, December 27, 2000
This review is from: Disco Nights 4: Greatest Groups (Audio CD)
Every single one of these wonderful songs was a huge hit on the pop charts in the 1970s or early 1980. Disco Inferno hung around the charts for months and set thousands of dancefloors alight, while the minimalist Funkytown caused quite a stir in 1980. YMCA featured in the movie of the same name and was one of Village people's greatest hits. Boogie Oogie Oogie went Billboard Top 5 in 1979. Good Times was one of the biggest hits of 1978 and spawned quite a cult following for Chic. A very intelligent compilation and a pleasure to listen to, also ideal for parties.

This review is from: Disco Nights 4: Greatest Groups (Audio CD)
Disco Nights, Vol. 4: Disco Groups has good music; but just as another reviewer notes they have edited several of these tracks for some reason I can't quite understand. The quality of the sound is good; and the artwork is nice. Unfortunately, I am somewhat disappointed with this album because too much editing was employed before they released this CD. Nevertheless, what we do get is great quality--I just wish there were more of it!

The Trammps start the CD off with their smash hit entitled "Disco Inferno;" this tune really IS one of the greatest disco tunes of all time and The Trammps were born to sing this song! "Disco Inferno" is also excellent dance music even today; and The Trammps harmonize well as they sing this one out strong--I love it! Lipps, Inc. does "Funky Town" with lots of feeling and the strings section is used very well. "Funky Town" has a great beat and Lipps, Inc. delivers this without a superfluous note. "Funky Town" naturally has that great funky `70s beat to it and this is another prime example of good `70s disco dance music.

The Weather Girls also perform their cult hit, "It's Raining Men." I once saw a picture of The Weather Girls performing this number live. The two women, previously known as Two Tons Of Fun, were decked out in elaborate pink dresses while scantily clad muscle hunks paraded about the stage in back of them--what a hoot! The Weather Girls had several hits but without a doubt their biggest success was "It's Raining Men." The Village People also do a fine job on one of their biggest hits called "Y.M.C.A.;" "Y.M.C.A." was popular with guys even after they discovered that The Village People were representing an alternative lifestyle.

Tavares has a very pretty melody with their "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel;" this is also great music for dancing and the lush musical arrangement really works well for this number. In addition, A Taste Of Honey makes good on "Boogie Oogie Oogie;" "Boogie Oogie Oogie" is more classic disco and that's awesome!

The Hues Corporation does one of my very favorite disco tunes called "Rock The Boat;" they sing and play this to perfection--and beyond! The Hues Corporation really has a good beat going on with this number and "Rock The Boat" is a highlight of this album. There's also K.C. And The Sunshine Band doing "Get Down Tonight;" so many people were surprised when they found out that K.C. was a young white boy with long hair!

The CD ends with yet another excellent tune, "Native New Yorker" performed by Odyssey. Odyssey does "Native New Yorker" really, really well and it was always one of my very favorite disco dance tunes.

Overall, Disco Night, Vol. 4: Disco Groups has great music although several tracks have been trimmed down by an editing process that really screams "ouch!" This is a fine introductory CD for newcomers to this type of music; diehard fans will want more substantial CDs and box sets for sale on this website.

5.0 out of 5 stars Listen to this, March 2, 2002

The 'Pure disco' series is okay, but there are only the short 7" versions on it. But I like the long 12" versions more. Anyone, who thinks in this way, would prefer to buy 'Disco nights', because here you can get a lot of extended versions. Besides I cannot understand universal records. Why don't they published more volumes (on Universal Special Market)? There would be so much other stuff for another 11 volumes. People would buy that, because many disco tracks, especially their extended versions, are so hard to get. I had searched everywhere, but I have not found another great series like this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT SERIES! GREAT COLLECTION!, April 20, 2005

I am a big fan of 70's dance music, a/k/a "disco."
For those of us who love to dance, having contemporary music that was custom-tailored to that activity was something extraordinary and wonderful.

What I really appreciate about this series is that, whenever possible, you're getting the extended versions of the songs, or at least the full-length album cut.

[I'm betting that some of the reviewers who gave this cd poor marks never purchased--or even listened to--this set, but are from the "disco sucks" clique, and just wanted to make their point. It's OK if you don't care for "disco," but... Folks, you can't fault this record company, as it clearly--in large letters--states that this is DISCO on the cover. You'd be a knucklehead for buying one of these cds if you hate disco.]

Also, this is not watered-down, or overly-pop disco, like what was featured in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER [I refer specifically to the BeeGees, and BeeGees-produced tracks--nothing against the Gibb brothers, they are great in their own right, but their SNF stuff is definitely not "classic" disco in my book]. Nope, this is the real club stuff, not designed to capitalize on a trend, but which actually helped CREATE the trend. That being said, two highlights from this set WERE featured in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, and are fine cuts and pretty exciting and dynamic: "Disco Inferno," and "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel."

This set is loaded with dance classics, among my favorites: Chic's "Good Times," and Odyssey's "Native New Yorker," the latter being one of the all-time, smooth, sophisticated 70's club tunes. And for those who like to spell while they dance there's even "Y.M.C.A."

In fact, for a representation of the finest of 70's dance/club music, you'd be hard-pressed to beat this set.

The sound is uniformly good throughout this entire series. Boogie on! Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Disco Music, February 2, 2009
Greatest Disco Groups is volume 4 in the Disco Nights series. It is forty-three minutes and thirty-five seconds long and was released on September 1, 1995. In the cassette version, two songs are missing. The two songs are: Disco Nights (Rock Freak) and Native New Yorker. I think the title is misleading. Some of the groups were one hit wonders and then disappeared. If you got rid of the Weather Girls and replaced them with Blonde, then the title could be more creditable. Still this is a good disco cassette. Disco Nights, Vol. 6: #1 Disco Hits gets an AA++.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another bunch of good 70s Disco music... Good addition to your collection!, April 1, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Disco Nights 4: Greatest Groups (Audio CD)
Village People, Tavares and other Disco "heroes" have some of their best Hits included in this album. The sound quality is quite good, considering that some tracks seem to be taken from the original (or well dubbed) tapes.
Also included in this CD, that marvelous piece titled "Native New Yorker" by Odyssey, a song that is both Disco and Soul at the same time. I really love it!
