4.0 out of 5 stars real disco for real, June 11, 2000
By
This review is from: Disco Spectrum V.2 (Audio CD)
Well, it's what it is: compilation of old school and mostly unknown disco anthems, picking up from some hard-to-find 12', etc. Can't say, it blew me out, but, well, if you love disco it's your choice -- at least, this very compilation isn't so straightforward like previous effort: here you can find some real diamonds, let me say, disco epics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Rareties Collection, July 25, 2001
By
disco75 "disco75" (State College, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Disco Spectrum 2 (Audio CD)
As with the first volume of this set, the songs included here are real rareties. They represent what disco was for dancers in the 70's-- not the radio hits played everywhere, but the songs that pulled us onto the dance floors of the best clubs and pushed us into ecstatic heights. Not all of the tracks here are stand-outs, but there are some real finds from the late 70's and early 80's glory days of disco. "Standing In The Rain" is even better than Don Ray's bigger hit "Got To Have Loving" and his album is sadly no longer available on CD. The ubiquitous Patrick Adams is represented in Cloud One's "Rainbow" and this is a less grating choice of his work than many of his other productions. Cuban violinist Alfredo de la Fe puts in a great dancing number with "Hot To Trot." "Dancin' To The Beat" is a funky disco track, while "Two Hot For Love" and "Making Love" are examples of erotic disco that isn't puerile. In the 70's there were frequent and loud complaints that disco music was repetitious and narrow-- people seem to forget that dance music is constrained by its very nature into certain categories of styling, be it waltzes, Big Band, polkas, techno, or disco. It has to work on the dance floor. Sometimes it ascends to greater listening pleasure. Compiler Joey Negro has assembled here and on the first volume of this series a selection of recordings that reflect the highlights of the genre that perhaps even the naysayers would be forced to acknowledge as good.
