Everything a rock CD should be,
By Michael L. Farrell (Salisbury, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews

It was cool to find so many good reviews of the only album of my favorite underground rock band. The Buzzhorn have one of the most original sounds that I've heard in a really long time. I first was introduced to this band when my best friend sent me "pinned to the ground" over the internet. I was so impressed that I downloaded some other tracks and eventually just went and bought the album. From the clever lyrics, pounding drums, and screaming guitars to the awesome vocals; Buzzhorn just plain kicks a$$.==Favorite tracks== Also, this band did have a previous unreleased album. I don't have all the songs from it but "Heavy 100" & "Down Below" are two awesome songs that I wouldn't be suprised to see on a later album.

One of the best CD's in my collection,

This CD has been in my car for the last week straight. I never get tired of listening to this CD. I have been hard-pressed to find a better CD where I can enjoy every single song without having to skip from song to song. The song transitions from slow to fast to hard to medium to slow again blend well. You never hear a song and think, "That shouldn't go after this song, that's too much of a change."I must confess I heard this band while playing Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (See also Hot Action Cop), and I was hooked on the song "Ordinary" like a pimp on cash. This is a great CD, and definitely worth a listen if you're a fan of such bands as Nickelback, Fuel, Bush, Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd, Course of Nature (also a killer band), and a whole crapload of other bands. These guys simply rock, no matter what your favorite flavor of music is. 5 stars for sure! Favorite Tracks: Ordinary, Waste of a Man, and (as strange as it may seem) Rhino.

Picked this CD up a couple months ago & loved it...after my friends heard it, they asked me where to get it. This band has their own sound but, some of the music reminds you of Alice In Chains, Cold, & others. I actually like this much better than those bands. This is SOLID throughout - no weak songs & nothing to skip over. Wish they come tour my way so I could see them live. I highly recommend this - buy it & you will not regret it.

The best of it's type today,

I had seen Buzzhorn twice before at two different concerts at Summerfest in Milwaukee (2001 and 2002). The first year I went with a friend and I left less than more impressed. But after seeing them this year for the second time I was much more impressed and I got their cd before their major label debut and I was a fan. When this cd came out I had the same friend buy it for me from best buy and get a copy signed by the band. It is a very good cd. The Buzzhorn can be both hard rock and they can be sensitive. In fact my favorite song on the cd is "Pinned To the Ground" which in fact is a slower song. I feel like this version (being shorter and more polished than it's previous cd counterpart) lost some of it's feeling but it's still an extremely solid song filled with sadness. One thing that the Buzzhorn does very well is that they create their own sound and very rarely have one song sound like another. Yet they manage to keep the cd together and you are able to tell who it is. This is a very good cd of mostly new material ("Pinned to the Ground" and "Holy Man" appeared on their previous cd) and it would be worth a look if you are up for something that can be both hard enough to keep the rocker happy and heartfelt enough to keep the more peaceful side of a person happy. Strongest Tracks: "Pinned To The Ground", "Waste of a Man", "Satisfied", and "Disconnected".

The Buzzhorn is a largely unknown Milwaukee band that got some exposure by landing the song "Ordinary" on the "Need for Speed" PS2 game. The group has a muscular rock sound with dabs of grunge that occasionally sounds like Alice in Chains, Nickelback or Creed. The vocals of Ryan Mueller have somewhat of a keening whine to them at times..this may have been what kept them from breaking bigger than they did. The tendency's most noticeable on ballad "Pinned to the Ground".
Claiming this is the "rock album of the decade" though...puh-leeze. I'm not ready to go around showering accolades of "decades best" when we're only halfway through the decade as it is. This probably deserves a bit more attention than it got, but hardly a spot among the best music made so far in the 2000s. HIGHLIGHTS: Anti-yuppie screed "Ordinary" was well-chosen to appear in the PS2 game. It's punchy rock with a good hook. ("Life and death, the money that's left/And the vultures dive to intercept/And the friendship rolls onto its side/And you wait for it to die") "Satisfied" is probably an attack on unkind music critics ("Look around, nobody's laughing but you/Smile it off, ducking and keeping your cool") "Isn't this Great" is the sarcastic portrait of a crumbing friendship. The title track's probably the most interesting one lyrically, an attack on society as viewed through the eyes of a homeless person ("I don't believe this/My life's in a paper bag/Never trust no one") LOWS: The Alice in Chains resemblances might go beyond music stylings.."Come See Me" appears to be a junkie singing about heroin. ("And when I see you/I'll be sleeping on the needles/And I won't ever be the same...you decorate my soul/You set it all on fire") It's a fairly boring slow song. "Rhino" COULD be a pretty veiled metaphor about political privelege, but I suspect it's probably just intended to be an animal rights ditty ("It's a shame they can't do what other animals can do/There's animals where humans belong" seems to be a diatribe about cages/zoo animals) "Holy Man" is a self-important anthem but with nothing to say. ("Holy man, so lucky/Yet you holy man have nothing/Help them holy man/to break the locks of all their heads/Holy man, just like me") BOTTOM LINE: If you're an AIC or Nickelback fan, listen to the samples. If the vocals don't turn you off, You'll probably like it. At under a buck, it's a steal.

Like some people who found The Buzzhorn, I found them the same exact way; by playing "Need For Speed" on PS2. I found it kind of surprising that "Ordinary" was playing in the background, but after a while it started to sound like a good "go for a drive" kind of song. That was over a year ago, and I just bought this album 3 days ago. I'm quite impressed. They have a mix of Big Wreck/Filter. Big Wreck's southern (only they're Canadian) dash, and Filter's encompassing and loud guitars; and the lead singer has the midrange octaves that Richard Patrick has for Filter. What makes me upset about this band is that they are on a HUGE record label, Atlantic; yet I never heard these guys on the air nor saw a video from them. They need to start giving other good rock bands a chance instead of taking a handful, throwing them against a wall and seeing which one sticks. They might surprise themselves how well the public could take to these guys. I sure did, but I had to find out through a video game. Overall, very well done rock record, it's just sad not too many people got to hear it

I first saw this incredibly talented Milwaukee band perform an acoustic set at a Chicago radio station. I was hooked. This is their one and only album. It leaves you wanting many more from excellent musicians that form an incredibly tight band. This album rocks from start to finish, and for years has been one of the most played CD's in my collection. You will not be disappointed. We can only hope they reunite and continue this journey.

I, like about 90% of this band's fans, discovered them through the "Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2" video game, and I was entranced by the song "Ordinary" both as a standout selection on the game's soundtrack and as a well-written tune in itself. I refrained from buying the actual CD for several years because I could never find it in stores and I was not particularly into alternative rock at the time, but after discovering it for an incredibly cheap price, I picked it up and am glad I did.
Musically and lyrically, the band recalls typical 90s grunge and hard rock along the lines of Alice in Chains, with melancholy riff-driven tracks containing soulful guitar licks and vague introspective lyrics about disenchantment, drugs, and politics, all upon a production landscape lending a vast, desolate quality to the sound. The vocalist has a unique tone about his voice that escapes the throaty, cliché crooning of contemporaries such as Scott Stapp and compels the somber tone of the music with pained cries just shy of being poppy. The CD is nothing innovative or spectacular, but is very entertaining and inspiring, especially in the racing-game scenario that originally gained this band its fame. A worthy purchase for the $0.01 for which Amazon offers it.

Holy crap. Never in my life have I come across an album that grabs me around the neck and forces my to head bang. I ordered it for Christmas back in September and it was well worth the wait. This album is flawless. Every song is solid and full of hard rock. All the tracks are great but some of the better ones are "To Live Again," "Disconnected," "Isn't This Great," and "Rhino." I would recommened this album to any and every fan of rock no matter what genere of rock you like. And I'll stamp that.

Okay, first...I am 48 years old; second, I bought this off Amazon just by the reviews and I cannot imagine that this was Buzzhorn's first release!! I cut my teeth on rock I have not heard a debut release like this in YEARS and years (except Atticus Fault who have unfortunately disbanded). I am REALLY looking forward to hearing more in the future and watching their rise to prominence (if they can hold the band together through the turmoil of the Music Industry and any personal B.S. that plagues so many bands these days, like the now defunct Spacehog). Please stick together guys, you definitely have a HUGE career ahead of you!! And....you don't have to wait a year to release more music (hint, hint). Get a good public relations/publicity agent who KNOWS how to tell the world you exist....the world DESERVES to know, and you deserve the praise. Thanks for the music guys!! Keep up the incredible work!! |
