Editorial Reviews

Los Lobos, Los Angeles masterful musicians who catapulted from the East L.A. bar scene to worldwide recognition for their unique sound mixing Latin soul grooves, roots rock, Mexican folk, traditional Spanish, blues and R&B, are celebrating their 40th anniversary as a band with the release of DISCONNECTED IN NEW YORK CITY. Including all their hits and fan favorites (La Bamba, Little Things and Set Me Free Rosa Lee) and recorded live in December 2012 at the City Winery in New York City, the original members, David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas, Louie Perez, Steve Berlin and Conrad Lozano play with an invigorating, joyous spirit as they revisit four decades of musical magic. This Exclusive Deluxe Set includes 2 CDs and a bonus DVD with 5 Live Performances (Cumbia, Tears of God, Set Me Free Rosa Lee, Venganza and Malaque) filmed from New York City.

I should clarify and say that this is four stars with the potential for five, but I need a little more than a week to see how mas y mas repeated listens play out.

For now, I can say this with certainty: This is the kind of album that's a reminder of just how ridiculously fantastic these guys are and it almost makes you angry that there isn't more mainstream appeal for such amazing musicians that bring you along on their wild journeys between languages and genres. Let the masses go listen to Katy Perry put out the most generic pop possible. So what if the popularity of Nickelback strains US-Canada relations? And who cares that U2 is still regarded as 'the biggest band in the world' despite ceding any real creativity or soul many albums ago?

Granted, I'm biased since I'm a huge fan of Los Lobos, but I submit that this is among the most pleasing albums for people like me who pretty much own everything else they've put out and seen them in concert several times. It's a more condensed look at their body of work than "Just Another Band from East L.A.: A Collection," but it's more unique in that you're not getting the bulk of the songs repackaged from their original albums. Rather, this evokes everything fans love about seeing the band perform which, of course, is expected in a live recording, though I think the recording and feel of it creates a more intimate experience than, say, the "Live at the Fillmore" album.

This is a very good live album and is much better than the Live at the Fillmore set several years ago. While that album had average sound and a so-so performance, the playing on this set is inspired throughout. I recommend the deluxe edition with the bonus tracks. "Don't Worry Baby" has a nice acoustic blues intro.

This is a semi-unplugged album but that just allows the guitar work to stand out all the more. "Tin Can Trust" is much better than its studio counterpart. Highly recommended.

Far from a late-career cash grab, this is a worthy companion to the awesomely ear-splitting "Live at the Fillmore" they put out a few years ago.

If you saw "Disconnected" in the title and assumed this would be like Clapton's snooze-inducing stripped-down "Layla," you owe it to yourself to give this a try.

First off: this is one of the loudest albums I've heard in years. Although acoustic guitars replace electric, they're still played with the same aggression and tight interplay that we love about these guys. You can hear the solos being played on the acoustics with the verve of the originals, and it sounds great. Different, but great.

To my ears, it sounds as though the sax has moved up, almost to where it takes the place of the lead guitar on several of the songs. This album actually makes me want to hear more; I particularly wonder how my favorites, "I Walk Alone" and "I Can't Understand" would sound in this style.

What this says to me is that the band isn't ready to be done yet. If they quit today, they'd still be top-twenty all-time, but unlike a lot of their nostalgia-peddling contemporaries, they're still creating new sounds. In fact, the slightest song on the album is the "La Bamba/Good Lovin'" medley, which basically exists to show that whoever wrote the latter um, well, "borrowed" from the former.

At 6.99 for the whole album plus bonus tracks, it's a steal.

When I heard Los Lobos were putting out a mainly acoustic set, I was truly excited as they are one of my favourite groups and the opportunity to hear them in a different context was welcome. After hearing the stunning performance , I was even more enamoured of the idea. The musicianship is superb, the sound is impeccable and the selections are a great combination of old favourites and off-the-wall surprises. One sure tip: Get the Amazon exclusive edition which has five extra songs - well worth the small price premium!!!

A really amazing record from one of the best bands of all time. This is a sort of unplugged record and Los Lobos sound amazing. If you are a fan at all of Los Lobos buy this now.

Good mix. Like the DVD. Second CD could have had more music on it. Even filler would have been nice. Love these guys

not only do i think that los lobos is a spectacular group because they are constantly writing music and growing as a group but i have talked to each member a number of times and they are truly in love with their fans. david hildalgo is a spectacular musician as he can play any instrument. louie perez at one time was the group's drummer and was asked to play guitar, which he does superbly. after shows, it doesnt make any difference how many fans are in the audience, they will stay and talk and sign everything until done.

Having seen Los Lobos in concert a few times, I can say that unless you've been to show and felt the energy emanating from these musicians, you'll never fully appreciate Los Lobos live.

But if this is all that you can do, you'll not be disappointed. A really fine, fine album with a lot of incredible performances. And of course, "Set Me Free, Rosa Lee" my favorite Los Lobos tune is one of the showstoppers on this set.
