Book Description

January 2000
DISCOUNT AIRFARES is a step-by-step manual that will show you the simple strategies others are using to save hundreds of dollars on every purchase of airline tickets. This is the most comprehensive book ever written explaining airline ticket prices.

This sourcebook contains much more than explanations and examples. It is filled with hundreds of Web site addresses and telephone contact numbers you can immediately begin using to save money.

Whether you are a travel agent or simply a budget minded traveler, this book will become your essential reference for airline travel.

Today it is all but impossible for the average traveler to stay on top of all the complex airline fare changes. Even travel agents are unable to keep up with the hundreds of changes that are made every day. We are constantly hearing about flight bargains, but lack the ability to seek these prices out for ourselves. We simply lack the knowledge, or information, to remedy this situation. What can the average part-time traveler do to avoid this "ripped-off" feeling?

The book is divided into three parts. Part I, the seven basic strategies, explores the seven most common, and easiest to use methods to purchase bargain airfares. Included in this section is the use of ticket consolidators, charter flights, air courier services, air passes, advance purchase excursion tickets, online resources, and the use of new or upstart airlines. These are the most common, most conservative, and easiest to use methods of purchasing discount airline tickets.

Part II of the book, Specialized Tactics, presents 15 additional specialized strategies that can be employed to save you money (and sometimes a great deal of money) on your airline tickets. These methods are esoteric, and are probably not familiar to most people. Many of these not-so-common tactics can help you obtain additional savings that can range from 25-80%. The fact that most people are probably unfamiliar with a method will work to your advantage. If everyone were employing these methods, the airlines would soon find a way to prohibit their use. Many of these approaches can be combined to obtain even greater savings. This section of the book will provide many ideas for those with adventurous spirits.

Part III of the book presents an additional 15 "Short Subjects." These simple strategies can often be combined to gain even greater savings. Often these techniques can be piggybacked with your basic strategies creating enormous savings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for the cost conscious air traveller, January 25, 1999
By A Customer
This book was of great value right afterI read it. My wife and I were interested in going to China to visit our daughter at Christmastime. We had been working with a travel agent who came up with a best price round trip ticket costing $840 each. I read this book and was made knowledgable about something called a Consolidator. I told my travel agent to try to do better than the $840 and to look into a consolidator. She did and came back with a r/t price of $580. The only caveatt was that we fly out of Portland vs Seattle. We live in Olympia so the decision was easy for us. Without George E. Hobart's book we would have been happy paying $840, but we were almost twice as happy paying only $580. This book is filled with specific facts and details about how to really save with the airfares. It includes names and 1-800 phone #'s, and all the nitty gritty that the average person would need to save some real money on airfares. I just think it's a wonderful book. Well written and easy to use. If you are serious about saving $$$, and you like to travel, this is one book that can help you every step of the way. I feel fortunate to have it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful Guide but...!, August 6, 2006
This review is from: Discount Airfares : The Insiders' Guide, How to Save Up to 75% on Airline Tickets 2nd Edition (Paperback)

This is a very useful guide for those looking for bargain fares. The book provides a comprehensive look on the available discount fares and provides tips and guidance to those who may wish to benefit from the bargains.

However, a lot has happened since the book was written. There is growth in low cost airlines in most parts of the world. These offer some very low fares which are affordable to those seeking budget fares. In addition, there are several websites that provides the reader with very low fares. Rather than list them here, one can just go to Google or Yahoo and other websites and carry out the search. That is why it is not absolutely necessary to buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars International Business and this Book, December 27, 1999
I work out of Nanjing China and have found this book an indispensible tool for business trips, for vacations and for emergency flights.

I have saved a lot of money and travelled to countries such as Indonesia, Macau, Thailand, Taiwan and Japan.

This summer I'm heading for Europe with some frequent fliers I've earned and this book.

Highly recommended
