Editorial Reviews

Review

Discounting Human Lives: Uranium and Global equity presents a comprehensive empirical approach for evaluating the environmental sustainability and equity of an economic activity. It applies this innovate methodology to the case of the largest repository of nuclear wastes in North America. The Elliot Lake area of Northern Ontario was the world's largest source of uranium during most of the post-World War II period. Miles of radioactive waste were dumped into the Elliot Lake Environment. These wastes have earned the nickname "Canada's slow bombs", because their radioactive emissions are expected to cause millions of cancer fatalities over thousands of years throughout the Northern Hemisphere. This analysis critiques traditional economic models for evaluating the impacts of an industry that creates such long-term, global environmental problems. It identifies certain characteristics of decision-making processes that are needed to avoid environmentally unsustainable and inequitable outcomes. -- Midwest Book Review
