I gave this kit to my 7-year-daughter because she loves science and sparkly things. Double score! She was very excited to get it, wanted to mine for the gems right away when she opened it last night, but I told her she had to wait until morning. In the event, she was so excited to find them that she mined all of them out this morning before I was even awake!

The medium the stones are buried in is about the size and shape of a small foil pan of brownies. It's brittle, and it cracked in shipping, which did probably make the gems easier to find but maybe not so much easier because it was fairly simple for my strong but not superhuman daughter to snap off pieces of the plaster with her hands and examine them for hidden gems. I don't think it could have taken her more than an hour or so to actually dig the stones out, but she's had at least another hour of fun scrubbing them clean with water, a skewer and an old toothbrush and another hour on top of that (so far) carrying them around and showing them to everyone she can find, explaining what they're called. She's thrilled with them.

They're nice gems, good size, the smallest being the size of a nickel and the largest chunks being about two inches across. Many different colors and shapes for her to sort and find out about. This was a great gift.

This arrived on the first day of summer break, while it was raining outside and my kids were bored. My older son (7) got a much cheaper kit called 4M Chrystal Mining Kit and we were pretty happy with that one. This one comes with a tray filled with plaster, while the other was a much smaller brick of dirt. I have to admit in the end that this one, with the plaster, was a more enjoyable and rewarding process as my 5 year old found the gemstones. It comes with a metal tool and a small brush. I allowed him, with my supervision, to use our hammer with the metal tool which sped progress immensely. He really enjoyed this kit, and the specimens were nice and big. I'm kind of meh on the fake turquoise, but he got a nice chunk of amethyst, a tumbled hematite, a very substandard tiger's eye, and some rose quartz. He was way into the process, not the product, so this was great as an introduction for a guy who wanted to mine gemstones with a pickaxe. It's kind of pricey, which is why I docked a star, and for the specimens which are just okay. But if you want your little scientist to enjoy an entire afternoon of gem mining, this is a great kit.

There is no better way to start collecting rocks and minerals then to dig them up yourself. This is a wonderful science kit filled with 10 beautiful specimens. I love the amethyst the best, but the quartz and tiger's eye were also favorites. The guide book made it easy to identify each rock and had lots of interesting information. This made a perfect gift for the rockhound at our house.

My eleven year old put this on his Christmas list this year. I'm glad I bought it! He couldn't wait to do it. It took him about two hours to mine for all ten gems. He used the mining tool and brush provided and the full color guide to identify the gems - which were very pretty and good sized. It's a great product!!!

This was purchased for my 7 year old son. We also got the bug digging kit at the same time, and like this one much better. The tools that it comes with are pretty basic, and not very sharp for digging. They are very "kid friendly", so there is not much fear of him hurting himself while using them. However, the metal digging tool is not very good for digging. We gave him a couple of screwdrivers and found those worked much better because the tips were much more narrow and sharp, and made the digging much easier. We also gave him an old infant medicine dropper in a cup of water so he could soften spots up when he was having trouble. The sizes of most of the gems were pretty good. The guide book for identifying the gems had 11 different types in it, so I knew he would not get one of each. However, I was disappointed that he found two of the same and one that one that really didn't match any in the book (it is a smooth black stone with no marks on it). The amethyst, pyrite, and geode (which he got to break with a hammer!) were our favorites.

My son received the Mine for Gems kit for Christmas and just loved it. He spent all day uncovering the gems and each time he found one, he was more excited to find the next. Very nice quality specimens. The book that came along with it allowed my son to identify each gem and allowed him to fullfill one of his Boy Scout collection achievments. He was very proud of his finds.

I want to start off by saying that part of me loved this. I got it for my 6 year old son for Christmas and he was so excited to do it. He couldn't wait to add these specimens to his rock and mineral collection. It was a great snowy day adventure and he was so excited to uncover each rock. My disappointment lies in that the block of medium that houses the rocks is painted white, red and purple and some of the rocks were close to the surface. This paint sadly transferred to some of the specimens and my son and I have been unable to get the red and purple to remove despite scrubbing and soaking. This would have been a five star product if it weren't for this fact.
