A must in every CD collection!, August 10, 1999

This album is the first album that any non-GLJ fan should get. This album will get you hooked on the band for life. Perhaps another unsung hero in the music world, GLJ has a sound and style all their own that doesn't sound like today's junk. This CD is their best right along with House of Dolls!

Excellent Vibe, May 23, 2009

'Discover' is a slick and vibrant album that stands up to repeated listening. I've had it on my shelf since 1987 and I've never grown tired of hearing it. Though the lyrics are fairly unsophisticated, and at times the compositions seem not quite fully realized, it all washes in the name of spontaneity, and that translates to a very discernible "edge" quality to the music. Twins M. & J. Aston have a highly distinctive character to their voices, and the band is energetic and spot-on. The drums have a pitch-perfect 1980's punch, the guitars have that buttery early U2 sound, and the bass is straight up rude and funky. With 'Discover', Gene Loves Jezebel laid down some first rate back seat makeout music, and twenty years later it still quivers. Known Fact: The American version on the Geffen label contains a different mix of "Desire" from the one found on the original Beggars Banquet edition. The former is the remix heard in the "She's having a Baby" movie soundtrack that contains an added searing hot guitar solo during the bridge. And though the orginal mix is slightly more consistent with the rest of the record, I'd actually recommend the later Geffen edition - it's excellent. Also Noteworthy: The producer's name, Gary Lyons, happens to be listed in the credits for Queen's "A Night At The Opera" under 'track engineer'. V e r y I n t e r e s t i n g...

OVER THE ROOFTOP, April 21, 2009
This review is from: Discover (Audio CD)
Rarely do I find musical groups/artists that I can listen all the way thru every song and honestly say that I love every song. I love every song, every album this group does. Over the Rooftop is haunting...and beautiful to the extreme. Anybody who has the talent to write and sing like this...is a god....:) Any woman who has a man with the intelligence and sensitivity to write these lyrics is blessed. Ahhhhhhhh!
