A must in every CD collection!,

This album is the first album that any non-GLJ fan should get. This album will get you hooked on the band for life. Perhaps another unsung hero in the music world, GLJ has a sound and style all their own that doesn't sound like today's junk. This CD is their best right along with House of Dolls!

'Discover' is a slick and vibrant album that stands up to repeated listening. I've had it on my shelf since 1987 and I've never grown tired of hearing it. Though the lyrics are fairly unsophisticated, and at times the compositions seem not quite fully realized, it all washes in the name of spontaneity, and that translates to a very discernible "edge" quality to the music. Twins M. & J. Aston have a highly distinctive character to their voices, and the band is energetic and spot-on. The drums have a pitch-perfect 1980's punch, the guitars have that buttery early U2 sound, and the bass is straight up rude and funky. With 'Discover', Gene Loves Jezebel laid down some first rate back seat makeout music, and twenty years later it still quivers.
Known Fact: The American version on the Geffen label contains a different mix of "Desire" from the one found on the original Beggars Banquet edition. The former is the remix heard in the "She's having a Baby" movie soundtrack that contains an added searing hot guitar solo during the bridge. And though the orginal mix is slightly more consistent with the rest of the record, I'd actually recommend the later Geffen edition - it's excellent. Also Noteworthy: The producer's name, Gary Lyons, happens to be listed in the credits for Queen's "A Night At The Opera" under 'track engineer'. V e r y I n t e r e s t i n g...

OVER THE ROOFTOP,

Rarely do I find musical groups/artists that I can listen all the way thru every song and honestly say that I love every song.
I love every song, every album this group does. Over the Rooftop is haunting...and beautiful to the extreme. Anybody who has the talent to write and sing like this...is a god....:) Any woman who has a man with the intelligence and sensitivity to write these lyrics is blessed. Ahhhhhhhh!

This cd will hook you, especially "Heartache" one of my all time favorites.Every cd this band has put out is awesome, and it shocks me why they never became worldwide superstars. 2nd to House of Dolls,
This review is from: Discover (Audio CD)
I just received this CD 2 Days ago with House of Dolls.
Both CD's have some good songs. On Discover, there are 2 great songs: Desire and Wait and See. Over the Rooftops and Sweetest Thing are ok, and Kick is a simple pretty slower song. White Horse is passable. Beyond Doubt sucks. Maid of Sker is a little dark and different from the other songs, more gothic? Its a cool song. All in all though, Desire and Wait and See are excellent catchy songs.

Discover Needs To Be Re-Discovered,

This is by far my favorite GLJ release. It was truly underrated and overlooked by radio stations and possibly MTV. True, it is not as dark, brooding, or "gothic" in nature as Immigrant from '85...So what. This has all the hooks and lyrics that should have really catapulted them to bigger fame and fortune. Some die hard fans may not like this release because it had a lot of potential to have been heard on mainstream pop-rock stations back in the day. Heaven forbid anything sounds like pop music or mainstream to some.GLJ was like the best kept secret of album rock and pre-alternative radio stations from the 80's. Here in Arizona we had a station called KSTM (The Storm) that gave them decent spinning airplay. Maybe a couple of tracks towards the end may sound like filler; at least it's good filler to still listen to. There's some strong material on this album...This is one Gene Loves Jezebel that should be re-released and remastered (with bonus tracks or alternates)!
The hooks, the riffs, and the vocals are very distinct and unique or characterisitic of a couple of rockin' brothers who didn't become big haired hard rock rip off cover bands like so many did in the 80's...Gene Loves Jezebel avoided all the entrapments of corporate schlock ! They did it their way and are still doing it. For the younger kids and teens of today they need to listen and discover Gene Loves Jezebel to get some idea where some of their new favorite alternative bands may have gotten their inspiration, ideas, and sound from !

Gene Loves Jezebel Die Hard Fan ....,

I have loved Gene Loves Jezebel ever since the "Discover" album... I would recommend any music lover to buy anything of theirs. They have such a unique style. The only thing that I wished for was to have seen them live but they never got to tour the states.. So if you want to just have a taste of them buy the "Discover" CD first....Then I know you will be hooked to them......Enjoy!

bring back Immigrant,

To be quite honest, I haven't heard this album in years. However my reaction to it is still quite clear: this is alterna-disco PAP which sacrificed whatever GOTH potential they previously displayed. To say the least, I was less than thrilled with it. I'd just like to say that "Immigrant" is by far the best stuff I've heard from this band and the album should be re-released. It not only rocks, it has unique songs with unusual qualities, most notable of course are the bizarre vocals of the Aston twins. Taking the direction of the simplistic and under-developed "Promise," "Immagrant" was one of the more unusual and cool-sounding records from my old 1980's lp collection. Everything else I've heard from GLJ (about 50% of what's left) has made me want to toss my lunch.Hope this helped someone. Bring back Immigrant!!!
