Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Nothing says "surf's up" or "convertible tops down" like a Pernice Brothers record that hits the streets in early summer, and no one can breath breezy, sun-splashed melodies into three-minute fits of aggravation and despair quite like songwriting maestro Joe Pernice. On this fifth album (and as he with his previous band, the The Scud Mountain Boys), Pernice masks his sardonic report on a hypocritical, fearful, dumbed-down world with hooks and choruses you'll remember after three listens. Whether he's poeticizing about Gotham City ("Say Goodnight to the Lady"), overdosing on Chet Baker ("There Goes the Sun") or dreaming of a better life with browbeaten urgency ("Amazing Glow"), Pernice dresses up his dreams in music that will make your smile. And when he ruminates in "Saddest Quo" about train wrecks, plane crashes and the suffocation from tabloid TV ("It's a sad status quotient/Waiting for the sky to fall"), you can sing along, but you can't help but feel Pernice "choking on a blind faith far from broken." Brilliant stuff. --Scott Holter

Product Description
Discover a Lovelier You is the fifth recording by The Pernice Brothers, their fourth for their own Ashmont Records, and the 10th album overall for Joe Pernice in his various musical incarnations. Picking up where Yours Mine and Ours (2003) left off, this one has 12 artfully crafty Joe Pernice originals, evoking and inspired by transportation catastrophes, George Harrison, O. Henry, Duran Duran, Claire Danes, Michelangelo Antonioni, Ennio Morricone and other fascinating Italians, non-Italians and mise-en-scenic situations. Despite all the outside influences, Pernician flourishes abound. These are Joe's best songs to date, wellexecuted and tight, and all things being relative, that's good. And as if that weren't enough, there are two waltzes. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shimmering Dream Pop Never Sounded So Good, July 11, 2005
I fell in love with the Pernice Brothers' 2003 album Yours, Mine & Ours, but the track "Judy" was the only must-listen. Now with Discover a Lovelier You, they've found a consistent fabric to weave one incredible album of dream pop songs. You won't find one bad track, not one. Sad, dripping with ache and melancholy, their songs also have a beautiful guitar sound that lets the listener know it's the songwriting, not faddish sound effects, that will carry the day. For fans of this crooning sad dream pop, check out Radio Dept., Wan Light, and Ronderlin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album, June 16, 2005
Let's just say Joe and company are a force to be reckoned with.
The Pernice Brothers are the real deal.

Their last album, the slight "Yours, Mine & Ours" (2003) was short on memorable songs. But this album more than makes up for the previous album's shortcomings.

The best song on this album HAS to be "Amazing Glow". The song is so lovely that it is worth the price of the album alone.

Other great songs are: Saddest Quo, Say Goodnight to the Lady, Subject Drop, There Goes the Sun, My So-Called Celibate Life, and Dumb It Down.

This is one of Joe's best albums, probably the best Pernice Brothers albums (or right behind "World Won't End") and one of the very best albums of 2005.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Pop Masterpiece from Joe, June 14, 2005
By Hafiz Huda (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was excited to see my pre-sale copy of "Discover a Lovelier You" in my mailbox yesterday and Joe Pernice has done it again. I thought his work was already great when I first bought "Yours, Mine & Ours," but this one is even slicker and more melodic. Gorgeous arrangements, striking lyrics, and great hooks... The Pernice Brothers create music that is nostalgic on multiple levels: both personally because love songs tend to work that way with me, and as a musician. Smart indie-rock still exists... and you simply won't find this kind of stuff on major record labels anymore. It definitely makes my top ten list for the year!
