I fell in love with the Pernice Brothers' 2003 album Yours, Mine & Ours, but the track "Judy" was the only must-listen. Now with Discover a Lovelier You, they've found a consistent fabric to weave one incredible album of dream pop songs. You won't find one bad track, not one. Sad, dripping with ache and melancholy, their songs also have a beautiful guitar sound that lets the listener know it's the songwriting, not faddish sound effects, that will carry the day. For fans of this crooning sad dream pop, check out Radio Dept., Wan Light, and Ronderlin.

Let's just say Joe and company are a force to be reckoned with.
The Pernice Brothers are the real deal.

Their last album, the slight "Yours, Mine & Ours" (2003) was short on memorable songs. But this album more than makes up for the previous album's shortcomings.

The best song on this album HAS to be "Amazing Glow". The song is so lovely that it is worth the price of the album alone.

Other great songs are: Saddest Quo, Say Goodnight to the Lady, Subject Drop, There Goes the Sun, My So-Called Celibate Life, and Dumb It Down.

This is one of Joe's best albums, probably the best Pernice Brothers albums (or right behind "World Won't End") and one of the very best albums of 2005.

I was excited to see my pre-sale copy of "Discover a Lovelier You" in my mailbox yesterday and Joe Pernice has done it again. I thought his work was already great when I first bought "Yours, Mine & Ours," but this one is even slicker and more melodic. Gorgeous arrangements, striking lyrics, and great hooks... The Pernice Brothers create music that is nostalgic on multiple levels: both personally because love songs tend to work that way with me, and as a musician. Smart indie-rock still exists... and you simply won't find this kind of stuff on major record labels anymore. It definitely makes my top ten list for the year!

I can't imagine a better album coming out this year. Joe has written songs that not only make you feel good just by hearing them, he's written songs that you continue to hear after the final note has faded, and I mean that in the best possible sense.

From the opening chords of "There Goes The Sun", you'll realize you are listening to a pop music (again, I mean that in the best possible sense) genius at the top of his game.

Joe's delicate voice is the perfect delivery system for his lyrics. Full of hope, angst and everything in between, Discover a Lovelier You may not help you do exactly that, but it will most certainly put you on the path of discovering the loveliest record of 2005.

With their 4th studio release "Discover A Lovelier You" [13 tracks/39 min], The Pernice Brothers deliver yet another batch of songs full of melodic charms.

Amoung the highlights are the catchy opener "There Goes The Sun"(an obvious choice for a single), "My So Called Celibate Life", "Amazing Glow", and the almost Iron And Wine sounding "Pisshole In The Snow".

Another interesting song is the album's title track, an instrumental (which they are not known for), that might be one of the more memorable recent pop instrumentals I've heard.

One criticism (a minor one) is that there are no lyrics incluced, and not much as far as liner notes go, just a brief listing of personnel. The artwork is good, as usual.

All in all, this is likely to please most fans of the Pernice Brothers previous work. If you are a curious fan, and are looking for a good entry point into their catalog, you can't go wrong here.

I, for one, was not a fan of Y,M&O...I felt that Joe's songwriting muse had failed him for that one. Too studiedly literate song lyrics that sounded like an overcaffeinated grad student trying overly hard to impress his advisor...the melodies, too, were too overwrought, crossing the line from melodic into syrup-y.

But here, Joe gets his mojo back quite a bit. He's reined the lyrics and melodies in, to the point where they're merely catchy, not gloopy...

Oddly enough though, I think my favorite track is the instrumental...go figure.

Having said all the above, this still ranks behind their best "Overcome by happiness" and "World without end" (numbers 1 and 2, in terms of quality for me, respectively).

Being a tremendous fan of everything Joe Pernice has released I may be biased, but this is a great album. Along with being a fan come high expectations and I am consistently amazed with each new record that my high hopes are met. If forced to pick a favorite of all Joe's records, this would rank right up at the top with the Pernice Brothers' WORLD WON'T END (2001) and the Scud Mountain Boys' MASSACHUSETTS (1996). Only time will tell if it end up topping my list. If you like great melodic pop with tremendous lyrics then Modest Mouse, the Shins, Fountains of Wayne. et al have nothing on these guys. Highly recomended, buy it now!

I am very impressed with the Pernice Brothers - their music is layered and their lyrics are intelligent and pleasant. Their albums are some of the few in which 9 out of 10 songs are great. I'd put them up there with the magnificent Belle & Sebastian, Beck, Kings of Convenience - the highest compliment I can offer! Their music makes for lush background tunes as well as nice music to sit and contemplate. Why aren't these guys very, very famous? Is it the name?

There are somewhat-smart transitional attributes to be found in between this indie pop's verse and choruses, but most of it comes across as a slightly more southern Deathcab in its most restrained phase.
