"Dr." Cynaumon: not a doctor, not a family expert,
By A Customer
This review is from: Discover Your Child's D.Q. Factor: The Discipline Quotient System (Paperback)
I have read this book very carefully. There is no evidence the study he references (the "tapes we listened to") ever took place. There is no evidence that Cynamoun actually ever counselled families. There is no evidence that Cynamoun ever was licensed as a psychologist in California. There is no evidence that Cynamoun was ever licensed as a family therapist in California. Cynamoun: "I have been a shrink for more than 18 years"--not true There's no evidence there are four "discipline types". Nowhere in this book does Cynamoun show respect or compassion for any of the childen whose stories he recounts. Cynamoun's "techniques" are taken from other writers on discipline. I suspect he did a couple of seminars with Jim Fay (of Love and Logic) and made up some of the other stories from his family life. I wasted my money on this drivel so you don't have to. DO NOT PURCHASE.

This is fiction,
By A Customer
This review is from: Discover Your Child's D.Q. Factor: The Discipline Quotient System (Paperback)
There is no evidence of a study to backup these claims -- no standard bibliography, no scientific/statistical basis for the conclusions reached by the author. Everything appears to be made up, which is troubling since I'm sure many people will be using these 'techniques' on their unsuspecting children. Cynaumon is not licensed by any entity to provide any type of counseling services to the public, so ** buyer beware **. Take this book for what it is: fiction.

This review is from: Discover Your Child's D.Q. Factor: The Discipline Quotient System (Paperback)
This book is based on a study that never happened. Greg Cynaumon is not a psychologist and he made up the results of this study. The publisher continues to offer this book when they know that the information in the book is fraudulent. What's worse is that this book states that child abuse (spanking teenagers) is effective. And Dr. Laura endorses this book. Amazing. A search of the Internet gives an expose of this book and Mr. Cynaumon.

Cynaumon Is a Snake Oil Salesman,

This review is from: Discover Your Child's D.Q. Factor: The Discipline Quotient System (Paperback)
I told the bookstore that they should put it in the fiction section. Cynaumon is a complete fraud, does not have a medical degree, lied about going to UCLA, has over $500,000.00 in judgments against him, is being sued by the FTC and numerous other entities, including former friends and partners. In particular, "DrGreg" is currently embroiled in the CortiSlim debacle with FTC and others. He is a joke and should be silenced, if not jailed. You can read more here: http://www.edresearch.com. But don't buy his books -- unless you want to read some lousy fiction.

This review is from: Discover Your Child's D.Q. Factor: The Discipline Quotient System (Paperback)
I am a parent of two young children (2 years and 4 months), yet I see that my daughter is a very determined two year old. I have read a lot of books on discipline, my mom is a family therapist, yet I have never read such an insightful, practical book. DQ Factor will be a part of my library for a very, very long time and I am sure I will continue to refer to it throughout the years to come.

I would like to say that I have read several parenting books, and Dr. Greg Cynaumon has hit the nail on the head with this book. It is a great combination of practical psychology and God's message. But he doesn't bombard you with religious messages. Rather he allows you to see how both science and religion go hand in hand. It is amazing how I can understand the children in my life differently since reading the "DQ Factor".I am recommending and will even purchase this book for my friends and family. If you haven't read it you should take the time.

I thought this book was overall helpful... I think it would be more helpful for school age children, versus my toddlers and preschooler. I will probably come back and look over it again in a few years. I won't say it was the most brilliant book I ever read, but it definitely was good to be re-oriented in the way I look at my kids' misbehavior and try to see the underlying motivators behind the action.

Personality specific parenting advice- Finally!!!,
By "heather-" (Omaha, NE United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Discover Your Child's D.Q. Factor: The Discipline Quotient System (Paperback)
This book allows you to define the type of child you have FIRST and then gives you ways to deal with (and ways not to deal with) your specific child. Parents know that not all children are alike- and, thankfully, Greg Cynaumon knows that, too. His book is the first I have found that does not give general advice for solving the behavior problems. The advice is totally individualized for each child's personality and works like nothing else ever has! I have purchased so many books on strong willed children, whining, fits, tantrums, back talk and many others. In fact, my husband rolled his eyes at my purchasing yet another parenting book. Unlike the general "answers" found in all of those, however, this book offers detailed advice that fits my child. Greg offers several different alternatives to getting your child's attention that actually work because they are formulated for each child's personality. It is amazing! What works for my daughter does not work for my son and I now know how to handle each of them to prevent or stop bad behavior. Greg's law enforcement and religious background add so much to the phsycological side of him and it is evident in his writing. It is such a relief to have someone with real world experience that understands strong willed children write a book on parenting. This should be required reading for every parent- whether your child is easy going or a demon in the making! Thank you, Greg Cynaumon! My sweet child is back (with a deck of chores that works like a charm!)and my whole family is happier and calmer!
