This isn't a review, just a note to prospective buyers, that the illustrations in this book are almost entirely black and white. There are some nice color plates at the front (very prominent in the Amazon Look Inside view), but that's it. Japanese art of all periods is, for me, so much about color (even monochrome ink paintings and early woodblock prints, where the bases if not also the pigments have at least subtle color) that I just couldn't help but be dissatisfied. It might be an excellent book in every other respect and I don't want to ding it more than it deserves, but I think the choice of black and white format, especially in a book published in the 21st century, was a mistake, so I give it a best-case 4 stars.
