Editorial Reviews

Written and Directed by Jeremy Richter and Produced by Richter Studios, Discovering Deerpath is an award-winning historical documentary about the town of Lake Forest, IL. Although a relatively small town (population of approximately 20,000), history has been very kind to this north shore darling. Narrated by Emmy Award Winning Host Bill Kurtis, the film covers local and national events/figures dating back to the early 1800's. Unlike the many great books that have been written about the town, Discovering Deerpath discusses the town's origins through many breathtaking works of art and animations. The movie discusses the history of Lake Forest Day, the creation of Lake Forest College, the early Irish settlers, the nationally acclaimed Market Square and Onwentsia Club. Local figures that are discussed in detail include the Farwell Brothers, Sylvester Lind, Samuel Dent, Marshall Field, A.B. Dick, J. Ogden Armour, Howard Van Doren Shaw, Dr. Theodore Proxmire and Greeley Wells (who brought in the first flag on Iwo Jima). The film also includes interviews with Arthur H. Miller (author), Glennette Tilley Turner (author), Katherine Kane (Executive Director, Harriet Beecher Stowe Center), John Shedd Reed, Robert Stuart, Jr. and James A. Lovell (Astronaut, Apollo 8/13) and features gorgeous cinematography, vintage photography and original works of art (over 80 original paintings were commissioned for the film). National events and figures that are covered include Abraham Lincoln, Lyman Beecher, Harriet Beecher Stowe, the Underground Railroad, Thomas Edison, The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, Upton Sinclair (author of "The Jungle"), Charles Lindbergh, The Battle of Iwo Jima and the famous Apollo 8 mission (man's first journey to the moon). Included in this DVD set is a bonus disc featuring additional interviews not seen in the film. The bonus also includes a "Behind-The-Scenes" featurette, movie trailers and more. Having spent the early years of my life in the Far North suburbs of Chicago, I was amazed at the history and beauty of Lake Forest that was portrayed by this movie. The documentary was enlightening and entertaining. The cinematography is truly amazing and keeps you wanting more. And there is no one better to narrate a documentary than Bill Kurtis. A must see for the family and especially anyone who is from the North Suburbs of Chicago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Film!!, October 20, 2009

Having grown up in Lake County, IL, Lake Forest has always held a bit of wonder and fascination for me. Admiring all of the beautiful houses and imagining what it must be like to live there was all I thought of as a young girl. After having watched this film though, I now see that it has so much more to offer. I was totally unaware of all the history that Lake Forest holds. It was wonderful to learn (or re-learn) about all the famous people that have either passed through it's (walls) and/or have made significant contributions to our nation. The cinematography was breathtaking also. It made me want to get in my car and re-visit this wonderful town. It's definitely a film the whole family can enjoy and should watch together. I recommend it wholeheartedly. A+

Being a resisdent of Lake Forest for more than 10 years, I was curious to see what this movie had to offer. I was pleasantly surpised of how entertaining the film was. Typically, documentaries are not my first choice when it comes to watching movies. The history of Lake Foreset had me completley intrigued and wanting for more. The film captured yearly celbrations, beautiful scenery and interviews with residents that have made an positive impact for the town and our country. This film should be a required viewing for all grade school children in the area, so they get another great opportunity to learn the history of Lake Forest. This film is great for all audiences.
