Chautona has a gift for creating characters that I would like to know personally. She captures the essence of the characters in a way that makes you want to meet them. This book is no exception.

Discovering Hope introduces us to Hope and Jay who come from different experiences and backgrounds but manage to forge a beautiful friendship. The dialogue between the two is entertaining, engaging, and just plain fun.

I was impressed with the boldness of Hope's faith combined with the respect she has for those who don't share it. Jay has the gift of seeing to the heart of a matter; a gift I think he shares with the author who created him. This insight into the heart of the characters is what I think keeps me coming back to her books.

This book truly made me laugh and cry. The balance was good between the two. The truth of God's word is interwoven and handled skillfully and with grace, understanding, and a depth of knowledge you don't always find in a Christian novel. This is possibly the best book I have read of Chautona's to date and I have read quite a few!

Tender, entertaining, refreshing. Discovering Hope weaves the story of atypical college students Jay Brown and Hope Senior. In classic Chautona Havig style, the witty but realistic dialogue unveils three-dimensional characters while weaving the story of two parallel and gradual romances. Jay is tenderly and gradually drawn into faith in Christ, while, at the same time, Jay and Hope's friendship overcomes trying circumstances over the course of more than a year. This is the story of Jay's journey to hope and Hope.

Jay and Hope are on the road to discovering what true friendship is all about.

The thing I love most about Chautona's writing is her ability to blend interesting characters, good clean humour and timely truths. It is so refreshing to have characters who are uncomplicated in their honestly and integrity. So often in stories we read of people second guessing each other, making assumptions and drawing negative conclusions. I love that Chautona's characters talk - they are open, truthful, challenging and willing to listen. This in no way means they are boring. It means that when there is doubt, fear, mistrust or questions they are brave and daring enough to face the issues head on and are willing to hear and adjust. To me these are very strong characteristics to have and make me want to spend more time with these people.

This book is about friendship. It's about having an open and accepting heart. It's about appreciating enjoying cultural differences. The story is gentle but in no way soft. Although Mrs. Havig claims not to be a romantic ... you could have fooled me!!! She understands romance as a gift to be treasured and savoured. I sort of fell in love with Jay myself ;)

Another very refreshing aspect of this story is the journey Jay takes as he discovers who Jesus is. I've seen too many Christians become offended by the doubts and questions thrown their way. Jay was allowed to question, he was given the freedom and time to search for answers and possibly most importantly, he had a friend who let him make his own decision.

Discovering Hope is delightful.

Thank you Chautona for another very enjoyable book. Keep `em coming.

More About the Author

Chautona Havig began her love affair with words as a very young child. An early reader, she spent most of her childhood devouring books at the speed of a paper grocery bag full each week during summer vacation. Blessed with a vivid imagination, she often escaped into worlds of her own creation.

When asked about her first attempts at writing a novel, Chautona said, "The summer I turned thirteen, I wrote the most insipid, pietistic, self-righteous pile of wasted paper that anyone has ever attempted to put on paper. Looking back, I guess it was a good reminder of what I don't want to write! Twenty years later, in 2001, I suddenly felt compelled to write, and I haven't stopped since."

With over a hundred books in various stages of editing or completion and three in print, Chautona doesn't see herself ever running out of ideas.

Chautona strives to write about average people with genuine problems, and how they strive to live their lives to the glory of God. Some of their methods are unconventional and their situations aren't pristine and free from the taint of sin in this world, but all care more about serving the Lord and each other than obtaining some Utopian ideal.
