5.0 out of 5 stars This Geronimo Stilton book about Columbus and his voyage to America on the Santa Maria is a great way to learn history!
Everyone knows that Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, but the Pirate Cats were heading back in time to divert the Santa Maria, "the flagship of the Great Christopher Columbus, "and were going treasure hunting. Something had to be done and Geronimo Stilton and crew, Thea, Benjamin, Pandora and Trap, were getting ready to do a little time travel themselves...

4.0 out of 5 stars a winner!, March 17, 2010

This review is from: The Discovery of America (Geronimo Stilton #1) (Hardcover)
Disclosure: I am not a huge fan of Christopher Columbus, and I take issue with the way he was presented to me as a child as such a hero. It's pretty well documented at this point that he was not the first European to get to America. I suppose news didn't travel so well back in the middle ages, so it WAS big news when Columbus made his voyage, but I still feel he has more attention and accolades than he deserves. All this aside, I do think this is a good book for a number of reasons.

My five year old loves Geronimo Stilton books. She is drawn to the eccentric characters and silly (but not gross) humor. The illustrations are quite appealing too. We found this new graphic novel "The Discovery of America" in the library and just had to check it out. My daughter ignored the other "fun" books she'd picked out and plunked herself down with this "educational" one and read it cover to cover, animatedly discussing the funny bits and her own observations on the characters as she read. She enjoyed the book thoroughly and is already after me to find the other graphic novels about Geronimo.

Now on to details of the book itself: The premise here is that Geronimo's friend Professor Volt created a time machine in order to correct time line changes that have been put into motion as a result of a trio of time traveling pirate cats. Geronimo and his friends (Thea, Trap, Benjamin and Pandora) must use the machine to disrupt the evil plans of these cats, and preserve the proper sequence of events. The cats went to Spain in August 1492, so our band of merry mice follow along and join Columbus' crew on the Santa Maria. They have handy dandy earpiece translators which allow them to understand any language, though I do wonder how it also gives them the knowledge to speak in other languages as well! The pirate cats, disguised as rodents, attempt to sabotage Columbus and incite the crew to mutiny. It is only through the joint efforts of our brave mouse friends that the cats are exposed and made to wash dishes in the galley. The ships finally land in San Salvador, and are greeted warmly by the friendly natives. It looks as if they stay for a party and then return to Spain, minus the Santa Maria, which was damaged in a storm. The crew are able to board the other ships and all appear to return from the voyage safely. The bad guy cats escape to their time machine, and Geronimo and his company transport back to New Mouse City and Professor Volt.

The story leaves out most of the bad stuff, but does suggest hardship when rations run short, wind doesn't blow, and fear of the unknown causes problems with the crew.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Geronimo Stilton book about Columbus and his voyage to America on the Santa Maria is a great way to learn history!, January 18, 2010

Everyone knows that Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, but the Pirate Cats were heading back in time to divert the Santa Maria, "the flagship of the Great Christopher Columbus, "and were going treasure hunting. Something had to be done and Geronimo Stilton and crew, Thea, Benjamin, Pandora and Trap, were getting ready to do a little time travel themselves. Professor Volt designed the Speedrat, just the right kind of craft, to get them on their way to Spain. ZKII ZIIK and they were off. When they arrived it was August second and they had to quickly head to Palos because the ship sailed the next day. Would they be able to find those scoundrels and avert disaster?

In the meantime the Pirate Cats had arrived and had squashed themselves into rodent masks. Stilton and his gang would never find them if they didn't use their best detective skills. As they made their way toward the harbor, they followed the fishy trail of the Cats. It was surprising that people actually threw their garbage in the streets way back then. UGH! When they arrived at the ship, they were able to get jobs from the Royal Inspector, who would take down all the details of the voyage. They would soon be "sailing to the Indies." There were clues here and there, but would Stilton's rodents be able to find the Pirate Cats before they altered history forever?

This Geronimo Stilton book about Columbus and his voyage to America on the Santa Maria is a great way to learn history. This is an historical graphic novel at its best and is very interesting. The panels are detailed, very colorful and animated. I liked the added details of small sidebars that give a little bit of extra history for the reader to take in. Details such as the fact they used "sand to make the ship stable" made following Stilton and his gang fascinating. I've found it difficult to say whether or not a young person will be drawn to any particular graphic novel, but there is no doubt in my mind about this one ... it's a winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Review by 11 year old who used own $ to buy the book, April 11, 2011

Monique Atgood (Winter Haven, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Discovery of America (Geronimo Stilton #1) (Hardcover)
This is a review by an 11 year old with mom's help.

The book was fantastic. It has a mixture of all kinds of different stuff. It had adventure, time traveling, history, culture, it was a really big mixture.

Pretty much what happens is, Geronimo Stilton is having a regular day and he gets a call from the professor to go over to a study immediately. He called up his friends to come along with him, and when they went to the lab, they found out he invented a time machine. And they found out he had made another one, but it was stolen by the pirate cats. They are 2 cats who are supposed to be kings of their island, and their servant.

The king and the servant are both idiots. While the princess is just about the leader of the group. They want to change time so their name is famous. Apparently, they wanted to go back in time and throw off Christopher Columbus travels so they can return back there with another group, so their names will be known for the first ones to discover America.

Geronimo and his friends dress like locals and they go on the boat - the Santa Maria. The rest you may find out as you read the book.

The drawings and illustrations are just about perfect, everything can tell you where what and when it happened. They make more books of these and I have almost collected almost every last one of them and I love every one of them.

You should really read the next book "The Secret of the Sphinx".

5.0 out of 5 stars Swift action and adventure make for outstanding fun, October 20, 2009
This review is from: The Discovery of America (Geronimo Stilton #1) (Hardcover)
Two full-color graphic novels revolving around rat Geronimo Stilton offer fun fictional adventures especially recommended for reluctant readers who need plenty of excitement and graphic stimulation. THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA has Geronimo facing his worst enemies: the pirate cats, who have discovered how to time travel and change history. THE SECRET OF THE SPHINX continues the saga: here the cats are trying to change the face of the Great Sphinx into a cat's face. Swift action and adventure make for outstanding fun titles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rat-tastic beginning, April 24, 2011

While I never got into Geronimo Stilton books the way I have the Thea Stilton ones I love the concept of Geronimo saving the future by protecting the past. Reading the seven graphic novels makes me want to read more about the pirate cats in the regular Geronimo books.

Geronimo Stilton is the editor of the Rodents Gazette. Like Clark Kent and Peter Parker, working on a newspaper has caused Geronimo the scared and bit accident prone mouse into the most unexpected adventures. In this story case we have the famous scientist Professor Volt in his secret portable lab introducing his friend Geronimo to his Speedrat time machine and his new machine to track the pirate cats of Catatonia when they take a trip through time in order to change the past in favor of cat kind.

As the title of the book shows the pirates cats have put on their mouse masks disguise and joined the crew of Christopher Columbus with plans on stealing the ship and taking credit for America's discovery for themselves. While Emperor Catadone the third is the ruler it is his daughter Tersilla who is the true brains of the team and orders everyone including her father around. Getting jobs on the same ship as Christopher himself is sailing on Geronimo, his sister Thea, nephew Ben, jokester cousin Trap and friend Pandora search for the pirate cats to unmask and foil their plans.

Like the normal Geronimo Stilton books the graphic novels are full of historical information and this book as a wonderful preview for book 2 to hook one into continuing picking up this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars I was skeptical at first, November 14, 2010
This review is from: The Discovery of America (Geronimo Stilton #1) (Hardcover)
Although I am an illustration fanatic, I tend to dislike graphic novels because they have only comments and chat, not many verbs. However, my little boys LOVE Geronimo Stilton and could not resist picking up this new format when we saw it at the library.

I read it - it's great. It's a little complicated to follow all the rat characters, and it isn't as "punny" as a regular Geronimo Stilton chapter book, but the history is there about the Columbus expedition, and my kids really like it quite well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different takes, June 2, 2010
This review is from: The Discovery of America (Geronimo Stilton #1) (Hardcover)
It is inevitable that there would be differences when a book is translated into a movie or a graphic novel.

But in the case of Geronimo Stilton, the difference went a step further in the same characters having different names. I am guessing it is because of copyright issues.

When Scholastic translated the storybooks, they changed some of the names of the characters, like from Patty Spring to Petunia Pretty Paws.

As the English translation of the graphic novels is published by Papercutz, they opted to retain the original names from the Italian version and avoided copying the creative add-ons of Scholastic.

This may confuse some young readers, but it does not detract the least from enjoyment of the graphic novels.
