Great Grooves and High Production Values,

I was exposed to this album due to it being connected with Leiji Matsumoto (of Star Blazers and Speed Racer fame). While Daft Punk's music is decidedly their own style, if you like works by Kraftwork, Erasure, Art Of Noise, but can also groove to Stevie Wonder or Jamiroquai, then you will love this CD!

It took a long time for these french dudes to make a new cd, but it was worth waiting. Homework was already great, but Discovery is simply OUTSTANDING! With a great beat & sfx (like the "ahhhh" in "One More Time"), this is one of the best dance-dj cds of all time. And the amazing artwork is simply one of the best piece of japanese cartoon ever; with a great storyline & fantastic colours, it has everything to do with the songs, it's as if the songs merged into a story. A must buy.

NOW....THIS IS WHAT I CAN CALL DANCE MUSIC ..IT IS M MIXTURE OF POP,ELECTRONIC,TECHNO,DISCO AND A LITTLE BIT OF JAZZ.....IT'S..ONE OF A KIND . ...AND THIS ALBUM IS GREAT! IN THIS LATEST ALBUM BY THEM,YOU CAN FIND WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY ...AND WHAT TOUCHES YOUR SOUL..IT IS SIMPLE ..CLEAR ..DIFFERENT AND NO ONE EXTREMELY CAN HANDLE IT. IT'S ALSO DIFFICULT TO DECIDE YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK WHEN YOU LISTEN TO IT. THIS IS UNIQIE........THIS IS THE POWER OF MODERN DISCO!

Daft Punk's Discovery album is extremely balanced in that it is half instrumental and half vocalized. Each song has quite a different atmosphere and thus offers something for every mood. Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger is easily the best known song on Discovery, and also the best to dance to. It offers the variety of tones and sounds that One More Time lacks, but One More Time still manages to hold its own. Face To Face offers a slightly less electronic sound than the rest of the album. Too Long contains a very mellow beat, with some wholesome lyrics. Aerodynamic is in my opinion the best instrumental song on the album, with such a wide array of sounds and distortions. Superheroes features a very nice retro beat. Crescendolls has a very futuristic sound and beat, and it holds your attention. Digital Love is somewhat like One More Time, only less repetitive and it has a very happy tune. Short Circuit offers a very cool compilation of futuristic sounds and it progresses very well. High Life is a lot different from the other songs, but is similar to Face To Face in its feel and rhythm. Something About Us offers a well balanced mix of instrumental and vocalized beats. Veridis Quo has a very aged sound to it, and is very appealing to the ears. Not really danceable, but great none the less. Night Vision features sort of an eerie beat and is very fitting of its title. Voyager features a soft sound and atmosphere, and yet a faster paced beat than Something About Us. All in all, for such a well-balanced album, I give Discovery 5 stars. It is a great choice for newcomers, and old fans will be pleasantly surprised.

Like a fine wine.... or a really good cheap wine.,

When the electronic scene exploded in the mid to late nineties, one of the bands that stood out from the house and trance dominated genre was daft punk. With their electro-pop epic Homework (1997), they single-handedly set the bar for electronic LP's and broke the mold of the mindless dance format. Combining simplistic yet brilliant hard hitting beats, grinding yet melodic synth lines, and the perfect amount of vocoder (that electronic voice sound); Homework went against the grain and was a perfect album in every way, not just in the electronic music field but in music in general.
Discovery followed Homework four years later when the electronic scene had shifted to a more commercially acceptable club atmosphere instead of the underground rave scene and it was definatly reflected in the album. Being their sophmore album I was looking forward to somthing similar to Homework and was initially disapointed in the incredibly retro sounds of Discovery. Sounding somthing like Midnight Star meets Brian Wilson circa 1968, this album is very Poppy. It could be played at chucky cheeze or major magic's as easily as it could be played at a trendy European disco-tech. However if it is taken with a grain of salt and the hope that some kitschy elements were added knowingly; the album starts to become incredible. Songs like Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, Crescendolls, and One more time- become instant classic party anthems the first time you hear them if you don't take them to seriously. All and all I think the album went a bit too far with the lightness of the sound (I can not forgive the line "music got me feelin' so free, celebrate and dance so free). You can only eat so much cool whip before you get sick. So for this sole reason I gave it 4 insted of 5 stars. Still highly recomended.

I think that Discovery is a great cd, except that only the first 5 songs are good. One more time has great music, and great words, but is kinda repetative. I still like it. Digital Love is ok, but it is kind of silly in the begining. Aerodynamic is an AMAZING song. with the mix of techno guitar, techno percussion, and sfx, its the secound best song on the whole cd. Harder, better, faster, stronger is the all time best song i have ever heard. Between the music, the techno voice, and sfx, i love it. I especcially like the part after the chorus (work it harder, make it better, do it faster makes us stronger, holin never power faster, hour work is never over), and the part after that, where they morf the voice with a guitar. Crecendolls is very good, and it has the 2nd best music on the cd (Aerodynamic gets 1st place), but the words are a little strange. I give it 4 stars, only because only the 1st 5 songs are good. But it still is a great cd.

Better Than The First One But Still Only For Fans,

Daft Punk's second release is better than their debut, and yet it is only for fans of this kind of electronic music, or soft techno. It was recommended to me because I, despite my rejection of this musical genre, fell for the other French band 'Air'. But Daft Punk is less soulful and more electronically sterile. Still, the variation in the songs is remarkably high - my compliment for that. Songs like 'Veridis Quo' and 'One More Time' do possess a certain charm. But for an old rock fan like me, it is far from enough to justify a buy. |
