My 7-year-old just got this as a gift and is enjoying it immensely. BUT, the equator is in the wrong place. How annoying is it that the equator doesn't actually run through South America (missing Ecuador entirely) but, instead, runs through Central America and through the rest of the planet about 10 degrees north of where it should.

Don't mean to be a kill-joy, but shouldn't the fun be linked to learning geography correctly? You'd think the Discovery corporation might have taken a moment to consult an atlas before locating the equator in the WRONG PLACE!

We just got this for our daughters to use with homeschooling. Here is a breakdown of the map:

Quality: It is felt, but it is still quite durable. Unless your kids like to pull on thing with hulk like strength the map will not rip, and even then it would be on the seams. There are 8 grommets around the map to hang it up with. It comes with NO hardware to hang it up, but that is probably best. We used nails since we plan on leaving it up for a long time. If you wanted something less permanent you could use tacks, or those tacky removable hangers.
It comes with a few countries, rivers, animals, continents and oceans. There are a few of them we would have changed, but it is easy enough to get some felt, velcro, and permanent markers to make your own tags.

Education: There are a lot of different ways to use this map with education. You could have your children put up what is included, make your own, or have them fix what is out of place. We also got some velcro dart gun darts to throw at the map and say what it is we landed on. There are quite a few possibilities.

Negatives:
1. Some of the areas can get crowded if you put up all of the velcro pieces at one time. Solution: only put up animals, bodies of water, or places at any time to give it space.

2. There is no storage for all of the pieces once you have taken them out of the box. Solution: plastic baggie. small box. anything.

It is well worth the price, whether you are homeschooling or not. This is fun and interactive, something we can do WITH our daughters. Even we learned something while putting them up. (Had no idea where the Mezen River was). I definitely recommend this to teachers, homeschool parents, or any parents who want to have fun and learn something.

Hi there. I'm not into writing reviews for too many products but I just got this one in the mail today & am quite enthusiastic about it. I have a 3 year old that's recently obsessed with maps. We've got road maps, an atlas or two, geography puzzles, & several basic map books but this Discovery Kids wall map is killer! Naturally, all the resources I mentioned work in conjunction with each other but I love the fact that this flannel board world map is soooo simple & therefore totally accessible to a 3 year old. It's also interactive, which is another age-appropriate feature of the product. Also, if you've got an animal lover, as do I, then those flannel pieces allow the child to connect animals with their points of origin. I think for $13 this product is well worth it & something that's not only durable & of high interest but also a learning tool that can grow with the child (i.e., by throwing more included pieces [i.e., countries, rivers] into the mix).

We bought this as a simple map for our four year old. It's interesting, but it leaves us lacking for several reasons. First, it's not detailed enough for anything other than the most basic questions. Sure, you can easily identify continents and major waterways, but beyond that, it starts to struggle. The selection of stick on labels seems to be a little uneven. Do you really care about some of the more obscure rivers at the expense of some of the other countries. It works against itself a bit because if you really want to get down in that much detail about waterways, then it leads to other questions by our four year old that usually end in answers like "yea, that's kind of over in this spot" or "that's somewhere around here".

In the end, we left up in his room, but got a more detailed Rand McNally map, mounted on foam board, and use that for most of our conversations about places and environments and whatnot. You might consider skipping this step and going with something that has more detail if your child is beyond even the most basic curiosity of world geography.

The Equator is completely inaccurate on this map. It shows it running through Central America.

Disappointing for an educational toy.

My son received this as a Christmas present and he had a fun time putting up the fabric location labels and animals following the included guide. The product overall is well made, but the QA on the cutouts was very poor in our experience. Several of the location labels and all the the animals were offset, in some cases by 1/2in. revealing lots of white space with portions of what was meant to be there cut off. While my son didn't appear to notice, the extra white space takes away from the vibrance of the map overall. The map really looks great and we plan on hanging it up over his bed. Assuming you get a set with pieces cut correctly it should make a great gift for any kid that likes exploring the world.
