Customer Reviews

We followed all of the directions!
B. Nease
I'm glad I never bought the A/C Adapter because the water pumps after two and a half weeks died and now the jellyfish float idly on top of the tank.

The product is so cheaply made, it is unbelievable.

My 3-yr-old son needed a nightlight for when we visited the grandparents. After trying a Lava Lamp (toooo hot!), a Star Wars Death Star Planetarium (switch broke first try!), I picked up this Jelly Fish Lamp off the pharmacy shelf for about $10. I was surprisingly satisfied by the results.

+ It's very easy to set up, first of all. I was done in about 10 mins after washing off the jellies and filling up the tank with BRITA filtered water and a couple drops of dish soap. The first time you use it, you need to soak the jellies for an hour and they won't swim perfectly until after about 24 hours, so don't expect insta-fun. Making sure no air bubbles are in the jellies' mantles takes some patience, too.

+ The weight of the thing is nice and heavy. It won't fall over with anything but a concerted push, I imagine. (A warning though - the cap doesn't lock down, it just slides down over the tank tightly. Tipping it will cause a spill.)

+ It runs very quiet when the tank is completely full, but the water jets that make the jellies swim will make whooshing sounds when the level starts getting low. Also, low water levels will turn the water, adding air bubbles that can get trapped in the jellyfish mantles, making them float at the top instead of swim.

+ The colored lights are very soothing. There options are a red, blue, green, purple/blue, and red/green setting. There's also a setting that cycles through them all. Each color brings out different colors in the coral background, which is really neat to observe. The strength of the light is enough to cast a soft glow into the room. This glow is brighter or darker pending the color selected.

+ As for the jellies themselves, they're certainly uncanny! They feel like they're made from some sort of silicon gel.

This toy did not work as shown on box. We have not been able to get the jelly fish to do anything except float to the top and get stuck in the motor, which then creates water leaking from the lid. We followed the instructions which were easy but cannot see this keeping a child interested for long.

I purchased the Discovery Kids Jellyfish lamp at CVS for $2.50!! (clearance!) and have had it for about 8 weeks. My fish always floated at the top so I macgyvered the situation by weighting them with tiny little hair clips - that worked just great. I absolutely love this lamp - I have it at the office and have gotten a lot of compliments on it - and it even fools some people. It is very distracting and mesmerizing to watch, but I don't know if this is "educational." It does go thru batteries very quickly - they last about 3 days. I am dismayed now because one of the fans has become loud. The machine was very quiet up until now. Maybe it needs oil? It really is a beautiful lamp with all the color changing and light flickering just like sunlight beneath the ocean, but it doesn't seem to be built to last. I'm glad I paid what I did for this.

...wish i had read these reviews PRIOR to purchase. VERY DISAPPOINTED with this one. after following ALL instructions the product STILL worked poorly. as advised, adding the 2 drops of detergent to the tank (to keep it clean) produces small bubbles, which get trapped INSIDE the jellyfish rendering them USELESS as they just float to the top and get stuck in the water-jet-thing. the tentacles ALWAYS get stuck, not ONCE did the jellies settle in the middle of the tank - they simply get thrashed about by the intermittent jet streams, constantly entangling with each other and constantly getting caught in the jets. it's a great idea, but POORLY EXECUTED. i really expected more from this 'Discovery Kids' toy....am actually packing it up right now to return it for a refund.

Right out of the box a plastic part that holds one of the water pumps in place was cracked while the screw on the other side of the same piece was stripped. I ended up having to use scotch tape to hold things together. The jellyfish have to be prepared by soaking them for an hour. Additionally, the water has to be distilled water and it requires three drops of liquid dishwasher detergent. If you are thinking of giving this as a gift and do not have either distilled water or liquid dishwasher soap on hand you will have a disappointed child. Furthermore it takes up to 24 hrs for the toy jelly fish to supposedly suspend correctly. Ours never did seem to suspend like the instructions stated. I also should mention that when I pushed the power button down, it never sprang back up. I can still manage to power on and off by jiggling the button but it is safe to say the button is broken and is stuck in the down position. This toy is sold under the guise of being educational. The only one that got an education was me. And what I learned: AVOID THIS PRODUCT AND SAVE YOUR MONEY. My daughter and I are sorely disappointed in this poor excuse of a toy (It will likely be in the landfill in a week or two after my 6 yr. old daughter forgets about it). Please do not purchase this toy and support a company that would put out such junk.

I purchased this after Christmas on clearance for $7.99
We followed all the directions to the letter and it went quite well. The next day we enjoyed a beautiful display of color and natural movement. The second day both pumps had ceased to work and also the light. I changed the batteries and then tried an AC adapter... no luck. My boys were so disappointed. We tried everything to get it going again. Discovery should be ashamed of selling such CHEAP JUNK!!!
