Book Description

April 1, 2012
Gerard Warner was not only a literary giant whose suspense novels sold in the millions, he was also a man devoted to his family, especially his wife of nearly 60 years. When he dies he leaves his Charleston estate to his grandson, Michael, an aspiring writer himself. Michael settles in to write his own first novel and discovers an unpublished manuscript his grandfather had written, something he'd kept hidden from everyone but clearly intended Michael to find. Michael begins to read an exciting tale about Nazi spies and sabotage, but something about this story is different from all of Gerard Warner's other books. It's actually a love story.

As Michael delves deeper into the story he discovers something that has the power to change not only his future but his past as well. Laced with suspense and intrigue, The Discovery is a richly woven novel that explores the incredible sacrifices that must be made to forge the love of a lifetime. Author Dan Walsh delivers yet another unique and heartfelt story that will stick with readers long after they turn the last page.

"My wife Norma and I fell in love with Dan's writing after reading his first two novels. I was immediately drawn in by the compelling characters he creates and the relationally driven storylines. His books grab your heart and don't let go until the last page. I look forward to reading every novel Dan writes."--Dr. Gary Smalley, bestselling author and speaker on family relationships

"Yet again, Walsh has crafted a novel so engaging that you will lose all sense of time as he draws you in and makes the reader a part of the story. Based on historical facts, this is the perfect blend of history, suspense, and romance. Walsh's 'book within a book' concept is intriguing. The reader will be reminded that God alone can give us the peace that surpasses all human understanding."--RT Book Reviews, 4½ STARS and TOP PICK

5.0 out of 5 stars The Face of Humanity on a Gruesome Time in History March 22, 2012
Format:Paperback
The Discovery is remarkably suspenseful and would appeal to men or women.

I would not have believed that any part of World War II history could be so absorbing. Walsh's "What if" imagination has taken some very important, and sometimes gruesome, facts and spun a very personal story that I didn't want to stop reading. I appreciate when I finish reading a novel and feel that I've learned something, I've been entertained, and I feel as though I've journeyed with the characters through their experiences. The Discovery provides all that and more. Read it. You won't be disappointed. A great resource for book clubs, or literary discussion groups.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2nd CHANCE LOVE like NO previous novel March 19, 2012
Format:Paperback
There is much more to Michael's million inheritance: secrets-history-perilous love. He said, "I've spent decades dodging its shadow," then secrets rise inside surprise. This is a story within a story so masterfully developed by Dan Walsh that it is almost impossible to describe. For the pleasure of next readers, little should not be divulged. Basically it's a stunning novel wrapped in a novella. Like a buy-1-get-1 burger deal. But fast-food is not five-star like "The Discovery."

I began reading in my patio swing; "`Totally sucked me in.' I drank a sip of tea. `It's not like any book of his I've ever read. It's almost a love story.'" Not true, I've read other Walsh romance +. I own 5. But this is WW2's Daytona Beachhead. A man-love suspense woven so tight the reader can't imagine a positive conclusion possible.
I rushed, pushed reading, eager for `what next.' When done I realize the story was so satisfying it should be read slowly and every word, line, allowed to melt in the mind. I'll reread it that way, as soon as I can get it out of my wife's grip.
I pointed to the half-read Walsh romance book, The Discovery, she held. "It's a romance thriller," said I. "Nagh-ugh! No such thing," she. I grinned. I knew!

Women must indulge in a bit of embroidered spy-v-spy midst romance; as men bear lingering kisses twixt action scenes. Sound like a film? It should become one.

Walsh is a favorite, & not a series author. No I've never promised anyone a positive review, but truthfully, after five stellar writes, I can't envision this up-and-coming author ever releasing one bad. He's destined for a NYBest. Not a formula author, always fresh-exciting-UNIQUE-like classic lit. And always the Walsh ending touch: close the story, then add further surprise, not an alternative ending, just a short story topper `cause the reader wants it to go on foreverrrrrrrrrrrr. Not preaching, but always a Christian character to call a hero.

UPDATE: This author has an earlier book "The Deepest Waters" that is now a ACFW CAROL AWARDS FINALIST. Deepest Waters, The: A Novel is also a MUST READ.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST DAN WALSH BOOK YET April 18, 2012
Format:Paperback
I have to say THE DISCOVERY is my favorite DAN WALSH novel. I loved what MR. WALSH did with the storyline. I thought it to be wonderfully unique. The fact that he added history in was an added plus, just the right touch to give me a glimpse into the times without bogging me down with boring details. The voices of Michael and Ben were distinctly different.

Michael Warner's grandfather passes away and with his passing leaves Michael his home. What he discovers will unravel family secrets beyond Michael's imagination.

I loved the story of Ben and Claire. In many books you get to know the character before they die, so when they do you feel the loss. With THE DISCOVERY the initial death holds little meaning. In this wonderful novel things change and in doing so, by the end of the story you're mourning the death. Brilliant!

While reading Ben and Claire's story I completely forgot that Michael was reading it, so emerged in Ben and Claire's tale I was.

The story may have been slow to start, but once you hit page seventy it takes off, making it hard to put down. I especially enjoyed the references to the past. My grandfather was a musician. The mention of the old time bands provided a wonderful trip down memory lane.
